100SS finale

The crazy 100SS season ended last night with a high-tension 464-comment thread, and the overall winner is:

MR LA Sports Fan!!!

Congrats to Mr. LA SF for his victory, staving off a charging Orel by sticking the 300 and 400 levels on the nose, after stumbling at the 200 level. To recap last night's tenth and final game:

100: Orel +100

200: No +200 claim, but Mr LA SF -20 and Erin -80

300: Mr LA SF +300, Orel -30

400: Mr LA SF +400 ("the dagger"), fanerman -40

Equally exciting was Erin #2 and fanerman's quests for the cellar, which Erin #2 was able to pull out by a nose over a not-quite-as-bad-with-the-timing fanerman. Well done, Erin #2!

Final scores, through Aug 6 (10 games):

1. Mr LA SF 2,540
2. Orel 1,750
3. Eric Karros 1,040
4. rbnlaw 310
5. J Steve 160
6. karina -20
7. Gagne's LG -30
T8. Alex Cora -40
T8. Koufax -40
10. Josh S -70
T11. Cabell -90
T11. Neeebs -90
13. fanerman -290
14. Erin #2 -320

Mr. LA Sports Fan will win two tickets to the Dodgers / Cardinals game on Tuesday, August 18 (7p start). They are reserved level tickets kind of on the moon, so they're not exactly prime seats. But hey, they're free! And we did tell you that it was a small prize. Tickets are en-route, Mr. LA SF: enjoy your hard-earned victory and commensurate rewards, courtesy of Sons of Steve Garvey.

Thanks to all 15 contestants for playing. As for future plans for 100SS, we'll have to see; scoring the games was a heck of a lot harder than I had anticipated. And to be fair, 100SS was not for everybody. As Dusty Baker put it in a post:

When is this 100s stuff over? Can't wait. It's like an online version of the beach ball. (8/01/2009 3:39 PM)

We Sons don't like the beachballs. So maybe we'll put 100SS away "on hiatus", as LACMA puts it. Thanks everyone!

Game 109 Thread: Aug 6 vs. Braves, 7p

Randy Wolf (5-6, 3.47) vs. Derek Lowe (11-7, 4.21).

COMMENTS: Best record in the majors? With the Yankees a half-game behind the Dodgers, that could change tonight with a Yankees win and a Dodgers loss. But even with Lowe fresh off a win over his old team, the never-wrong AccuScore (accuracy is part of their name!) gives the Dodgers the edge tonight. Nothing against Wolf, but did Mr. A. Score watch last night's game? Actually, here's something against Wolf: He has a 4-12 career record against the Braves and is 0-5 against them since 2004.

(The 100SS finale is tonight! Will it come down to Mr. LA Sports Fan vs. me, or will another contender burst forth from lurkerdom?)

100SS: Day 9 Results

The penultimate game of 100SS brought a new leader at the top of the standings, thanks to a precision performance from Mr LA Sports Fan! For those scoring at home:

100: Mr LA SF grabs +100; karina -10, rbnlaw -20, Gagne's Lucky Glasses -30

200: Mr. LA Sports Fan also grabs +200; Neeebs -20

Mr LA Sports Fan has the lead with 1860, taking advantage of Orel (who was working last night's game from the press box). Sidebar updated!

FINAL GAME TONIGHT! And I can tell you, since post-game scoring is such a pain, this game might not come around for a while. Good luck to everyone this evening!

Game 108 Thread: Aug 5 vs. Brewers, 7p

Manny Ramirez hits his home run last night.

Jason Schmidt (2-1, 4.50) vs. Braden Looper (9-5, 5.03).

COMMENTS:

FIVE BURNING QUESTIONS ABOUT TODAY'S GAME

1. Will the Brewers retaliate? Your move, Brewers pitching staff. Will it be war or peace?

2. Can we predict that Jason Schmidt will continue to be unpredictable? Everyone thought he was going to bomb in his last start. Instead, he twirled six scoreless innings against the Braves. Who knew? Not us.

3. Is Manny back after last night's home run? He doesn't have to bop another homer to convince us, but another 0-for or 1-for performance won't be very reassuring.

4. Will I eat a chili-cheese Dodger Dog in the press box tonight? Normally I wouldn't think twice about it, but I had pizza last night. A Dodger blogger doesn't keep his girlish figure just by sitting around watching Dodger games, you know!

5. Will 100SS come down to the wire? Tonight is Game 9, and Mr. LA Sports Fan made a huge push in last night's Jackie Johnson-themed Game Thread. I'm looking over my shoulder!

UPDATE 4.35p, from SoSG Sax: Okay, explain this, you AccuScore idiots:

How can we be the favorite to win the game (top bars), yet projected to score 0.1 fewer runs (lower left corner)? Doesn't the team with the most runs win the game?

100SS: Day 8 Results

Weather report distractions couldn't stop last night's eighth game of 100SS), which corresponded with a blowout victory for the good guys. For those scoring at home:

100: No score

200: Mr. LA Sports Fan grabs +200, Neeebs -40, fanerman -60

300: Mr. LA SF again snags +300, Josh S -30

Orel's idling at 1680 means that Mr. LA Sports Fan, with a 500-point outburst, is now close behind at 1560. Eric Karros is still in third with 1040. Sidebar updated!

Two more games! And, since Orel is working the press box tonight, now is your chance to gain while he's busy reporting. Good luck!

Game 107 Thread: Aug 4 vs. Brewers, 7p

Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.44) vs. Yovani Gallardo (10-7, 3.13).

COMMENTS: Gentlemen, start your engines! Today's race pits a reliable Japanese import against a flashy exotic supercar. The Japanese import recently spent two months in the shop and has needed a few tune-ups since getting back on the road, but its mechanics are improving. The flashy exotic supercar is coming off a winning race, although it was upset by a late-model American upstart before that.

Expected outcome:

(Today is Game 8 of 100SS. The finish line is in sight!)

100SS: Day 7 Results

Game 7 of 100SS was an empty one (and not just because our ninth-inning rally came up short), as the fine-print rules denied NicJ his 100 (for padding three or more comments in advance), and Sax let a 200 go by unclaimed. No changes in the score tonight.

Three more games left! Good luck tomorrow in Game 8!

Game 106 Thread: Aug 3 vs. Brewers, 7p

Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.76) vs. Manny Parra (5-8, 6.50).

COMMENTS: The Dodgers meet their Bizarro-world counterparts today at the Ravine. Need proof? For starters, they've got a Manny. We've got a Manny. Their starting pitcher is 5-8. Our starting pitcher is 8-5. They've got a losing record. We've got a winning record. Their beer costs $5.00, one of the lowest in the major leagues. Our beer costs $6.75, one of the highest in the major leagues. They're tired of the conceit of this Game Thread. I'm tired of the conceit of this Game Thread.

100SS Game 7 is today, as we go to the final four games of the season! Go to it, sports fans!

100SS: Day 6 Results

National television seemed to boost our game of 100SS, (rules are posted here), with our series victory in Atlanta providing good fodder for the game:

100: Mr. LA Sports Fan again displays his proficiency at +100; Orel -10

200: EK lurks and scores the +200

300: Orel nails the +300, with Erin #2 -30

Orel gets to a crazy 1680, and the race for second heats up with Mr LA SF at 1060 and Eric Karros close behind at 1040 points. Sidebar updated!

Good luck tomorrow in Game 7!

100SS: Day 5 Results

Halfway through the mini buffalo ranch chicken season of 100SS, (rules are posted here), here's the count of last night's depressing 4-3 loss in Atlanta (it's a short game):

100: Mr. LA Sports Fan yet again sticks the +100; Erin -10

Orel is still in the lead with 1390, and Mr LA SF extends his second place lead over Eric Karros with 960 points. Sidebar updated!

Good luck today in Game 6!

Game 104 Thread: August 1 @ Braves, 1p

Randy Wolf (5-5, 3.43) vs. Derek Lowe (10-7, 4.20).

COMMENTS: After a 15-10 July, the Dodgers look to head into the final third of the season with a fresh chaw of whoopass tucked firmly between cheek and gum. Standing in their way today is old friend Lowe, renowned for his ability to induce ground balls. Wolf has been good for at least six innings in 18 of his 22 starts this season. So don't expect many overpowering fastballs; do expect wormkillers and craftiness.

(100SS. Game 5. You gotta be in it to win it!)

100SS: Day 4 Results

From today's GT (Game 103), results of day four of 100SS (rules are posted here). Here's the count of the game:

100: Mr. LA Sports Fan sticks a very clean landing for +100

200: Orel pads himself with 199 but gets 200 as well for +50 points; Josh S -40

300: Orel +300; Alex Cora -30, Eric Karros -60

Orel extends his lead to 1390, and Mr LA SF takes over second place with 860 points to Eric Karros' 840. Sidebar updated!

Good luck tomorrow in Game 5! You gotta be in it to win it!

100SS: Day 3 Results

From last night's GT (Game 102):

Mr. LASF: This is tense.

Orel: The game, or 100SS?

Results of day three of 100SS (rules are posted here). Here's the count of the game:

100: Sax does not claim, karina -10

200: Eric Karros swoops in for +200, fanerman -60

300: NicJ does not claim, fanerman -30, cabell -90, rbnlaw -120

400: Orel with a clean +400

500: Mr LA SF claims, but with about 20 setup comments he is awarded 0 points (and about 1000 effort points, btw; still a well-done job!)

Orel takes a commanding lead with 1040. Eric Karros has 900 and Mr LA SF at 760. The punitive nature of this game is amazing, as only five of the 13 players have positive scores. Sidebar is now updated!

Good luck today in Game 4! You gotta be in it to win it!

Game 103 Thread: July 31 @ Braves, 4:30p

Jason Schmidt (1-1, 7.88) vs. Tommy Hanson (5-1, 2.95).

COMMENTS: Talk about a study in contrasts. Today the Dodgers start a once overpowering pitcher ending his career as a overpaid paperweight, and the Braves start a 22-year-old hotshot rookie with a plus-fastball and his entire career ahead of him. Do you like where this is going? I do not.

Atlanta, third place in the NL East with a 52-50 record, is 10-11 against NL West teams this season. Today would be a wonderful day to witness the Dodger bats thaw further, as we would hate to continue "all the weeping, moaning and teeth-gnashing about the weak offense of a team that's [24] games over .500," as my Mets fan friend puts it.

(100SS. Game 4. Right here.)

Game 102 Thread: July 30 @ Cardinals, 5p

Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.57) vs. Kyle Lohse (4-6, 4.35).

COMMENTS: Did you sit through last night's slogfest? Did you see the announcement that Jason Schmidt is scheduled to start tomorrow? Yeah, I'd be depressed too.

If it seems the Dodgers can't score to save their lives — they have 33 hits but only three runs over the last three games — then Lohse might be just what the executioner ordered. It's his fourth start since coming off the disabled list earlier this month; in his last outing, he was roughed up by the Phillies. Of course, they had the help of Cliff Lee, who, upon learning he was traded to Philadelphia, traveled back in time and actually had a pinch-hit RBI single. The Dodgers won't have that advantage because Ned Colletti refuses to trade Clayton Kershaw.

(Don't forget this is Game 3 of SoSG's 100SS series!)

100SS: Day 2 Results

Another rollicking day in 100SS (as you recall, rules are posted here).

Here's my count (but please let me know in these comments if I've missed any calls):

100: Eric Karros +100, Alex Cora -10

200: Mr LA SF +200, J Steve -20, Koufax -40, Orel -60 (I am not knocking Erin #2 given she called "100" rather than "200"--going forward, miscalling the hundred will not be awarded points, either)

300: J Steve +300, Mr LA SF -30, Erin #2 -60

400: Eric Karros +400, J Steve -40 and -80, Mr LA SF -120

500: unclaimed +500, fanerman -100

600: rbnlaw +600, Mr LA SF -60, Erin #2 -120

700: Orel +700, rbnlaw -70

800: Mr LASF +800 (wow!), rbnlaw -80

Mr LA SF vaults into first place with 760; Eric Karros has 700, Orel has 640, and rbnlaw 450. Sidebar will be updated.

***not sure if Erin and Erin #2 are the same person; please indicate in the comments if I should combine***

Good luck today!

Game 101 Thread: July 29 @ Cardinals, 5p

Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.96) vs. Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.95).

COMMENTS: In their past five starts, the Dodgers have a 1-4 record, have been outscored 33-14 — and outhit their opponents 52-50. (They also stranded a total of 44 men on base.) The main culprits for this mini losing streak have been poor situational hitting and an ineffective bullpen.

Dodger players have the additional pressure of knowing other NL teams are improving...with more deals on the way. Dodger fans have the additional pressure of knowing Vin Scully's wonderful ride has an end date. But at least Mark Loretta pitched last night. How cool was that?

P.S.: Don't forget 100SS rules still apply!

100SS: Day 1 Results

Wow, an interesting day in 100SS (as you recall, rules are posted here).

Here's my count (but please let me know in these comments if I've missed any calls):

100

  • Erin claims 98 and 99, but misses 100 so is penalized 0 points
  • Neeebs gets 100 but with no claim, it's a miss
  • Mr. LA SF loses 10 points for 101
  • Erin loses 20 points for 102
  • Neeebs loses 30 points for 103

200

  • Eric Karros comes out of fricking nowhere and snags 200, winning 200 points
  • Mr LA SF loses 20 points for 201

So, the running score is EK with 200 points, Erin with -20, and Neeebs and Mr LA SF tied with -30. A dominant performance by EK! Sidebar will be updated.

See you tomorrow, sports fans!

Game 100 Thread: July 28 @ Cardinals, 5.15p

Chad Billingsley (10-5, 3.72) vs. Adam "Loudon" Wainwright (11-6, 2.95).

COMMENTS: Once again, the Dodgers sit on the precipice of a three-game losing streak, something they've avoided all year long. So it's fitting that, two days after a hack LATimes writer called him out, Billingsley gets the chance to show if he can be that ace under pressure that the Dodgers apparently "don't have." True, Bills has struggled a bit of late, needing the Manny pinch hit grand slam to earn his 10th victory. But I'm guessing Chad has enough gumption tonight to win it for himself--and not for the fear of a three-game losing streak or the hack journalists without a clue. Just win it for you, Your Royal Thighness!

As a reminder, this game also debuts the new SoSG insipid time-wasting game, "One Hundred Splendid Sons", or 100SS. Complete rules are posted here, but the point is for us to have fun in the Game Thread competing for the 100-multipled comments. That way, even if the Dodgers fall to the Cardinals, we SoSGers can still have fun while it's grey in LA. I mean, when it's grey in LA, I sure like it that way, 'cause there's way too much sunshine 'round here. I don't know about you; I get so sick of blue skies whenever they always appear.

New Game to SoSG: One Hundred Splendid Sons (100SS)

Today, the Dodgers play their 100th game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals. And just to make this 100th Game Thread more interesting, starting today, we are inaugurating a new game that we like to call One Hundred Splendid Sons, or 100SS. ("The Hundreds" was already taken, as us street subculture fans know.)

This game has been transpiring, on its own, in many of our Game Threads. So we huddled together at our last SoSG staff meeting and tried to develop some rules to make it an actual game, with point values and a prize and everything.

As this is the first go-round for this and the rules have not been tested, though, we are making this a shortened 10-game season (almost like an exhibition season), to see how 100SS works (both the rules of the game, as well as the effort needed to administer the game). This season will run from Game Threads 100 to 109.

There will be a small prize awarded at the end to the winner. Our hope is that this exhibition season will work out, we'll fine-tune the rules a bit, and open up a longer season in the coming weeks.

THE OBJECTIVE: To score as many points as possible by "claiming" Game Thread comments that are multiples of 100.

RULES: At the top of the comments section of each Game Thread is a running count of the current number of comments. Your goal is to claim "hundreds comments," i.e., 100, 200, 300, etc.

To make a claim, your comment must include the comment number, e.g., simply posting "100" for the 100th comment, or "200!" for the 200th comment. Inadvertently posting a normal comment on a hundreds comment does not count; it neads to be claimed.

The Game Thread closes for 100s commments and is "locked" when the SoSG staffer posts a comment indicating that a Post-Game Thread is up (the timestamp on the actual PGT itself is irrelevant). No additional hundreds comments will be awarded for that Game Thread.

SCORING: Claiming the 100th comment gets you 100 points. 200th comment = 200 points, 300th comment = 300 points, etc. The stakes get higher as the game goes longer!

However, "padding" your way to a hundreds comment with normal comments (or premature claims) will result in a major penalty. If you claim a hundreds comment and the comment immediately preceding it, you receive only 25% of its value. (For example, if you post comments #99 and #100, you receive only 25 points.) If you make two consecutive comments immediately preceding it, you receive only 10% of its value. If you make three or more consecutive comments immediately preceding it, you receive no points.

If someone snipes you and you end up making a claim (not a normal comment) on the first post-hundreds comment, you lose (i.e., your running score is penalized) 10% of its value. (For example, if you post "100!" in post #101, your running point total will be decreased by 10 points.) A claim on the second post-hundreds comment loses 20%, on the third post-hundreds comment loses 30%, etc. Remember, this doesn't apply to normal comments, just claimed comments; normal comments are not penalized nor awarded.

So, you've gotta stick your landing, or you're going to get penalized. But if you nail it, you get rewarded.

MISCELLANEOUS OTHER CRAP: Deleting posts will not alter the comment count. You may delete the content of a comment, but the "comment deleted" placeholder will still count as a comment. We at SoSG will not permanently delete comments unless we indicate it clearly in the GT (and we won't do it as we near each hundred-multiple marker).

This game only applies to Game Threads for Dodger games (and not any "scoreboard watching" Game Threads.

SoSG writers are eligible to play because we have no advantage over readers!

Hopefully this works; let us know in this thread if we've missed a key point, and we may update the rules as we go. Round #1 is today's Game Thread, which posts at 2p PT. Have fun!
