no matter what, i hit the refresh button there (MLBTR) like once every 2 minutes.

I like the Sherrill addition if it comes to fruition. We could literally send anyone out there at any time in the game and confidently think that things are wrapped up. That, and he's under team control at least one more year.

Argh. Must know who we gave up...

Dusto_Magnifico said...

yeah, i wouldn't be surprised if it was Josh Bell or Blake Dewitt.

Orel said...

Does he become the closer? Broxton's set-up man?

Fred's Brim said...

Sherrill scares me - every time ive seen him, he gets himself in trouble with walks and general wildness, but then seems to escape his trouble because his stuff is hard to hit. Sort of in a k-rod sort of way, but not as good. That's only my impression. i dont have any numbers to back any of that up.

But he would be another name to add to The Dream Team

I would think that Broxton might be heading to the DL. As long as we have as big a lead as we do, why not let him rest up for a while and get ready for the post-season? Sherrill would be the interim closer and he does well, I'd make him the set-up man when Broxton is healthy again.

FB, you warm the cockles of my heart with that reference. Although I don't know of many women named George.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Stop talking about cockles for one minute and let's focus on what's going on here.

Orel said...

Except George Eliot! Nice literary reference, FB!

Fred's Brim said...

haha thanks, Orel ;)
My English degree from ITT Tech is finally paying off!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Gordon Edes has more info now.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

According to Edes of Yahoo Sports, it will be the names we kept hearing: Bell and Elbert.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Scott Elbert and Josh Bell... supposedly.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Looks like Halladay is off the table. I still think we need a bat.

Orel said...

Seems a bit high for a three-month rental.

Orel said...

MLBTR: "2:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that the Dodgers acquired George Sherrill for Josh Bell and righty Steve Johnson."

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm a little nervous about trading Bell.

MR.F said...

Ugh! Too much.

Orel said...

My bad: "Sherrill, 32, is under team control through 2011." (MLBTR)

MR.F said...

If it's Elbert it's too much I mean.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Orel: Sherrill is under team control next year as well.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I hope Gurnick is right. I'd like to keep Elbert.

Josh S. said...

Finally! Something!

Fred's Brim said...

me too

Orel said...

So, is Halladay still a possibility?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Here's some info on Johnson.

Josh S. said...

I'd say Halladay is still in play. It may only take JMac from the 25-man (plus prospects, obviously) to get it done, too.

Clearly, Jedi Master Ran-Dee has been preaching patience in the organization.

Less than 24 hours to the trade deadline

On TV they just said the deal was about to close.

He looks like a happy fellow.

Fred's Brim said...

haha cool - i wonder if Joe will ask him to curve it a little to comply with team dress standards

JL said...

this is from MLBT. interesting nugget of info. we needed this kinda input!

O's fan here.

Dodgers fans, you got a hell of a player in GS. He's a nice guy and his stuff is absolutely filthy. It's normal for him to put a runner or two on base, but more often than naught, he gets out of the "situation" clean as a whistle.

Please keep the nickname Flat Breezy goin' and good luck in the playoffs this season. Hopefully, if our rebuild goes as planned, we might see you in a few years in a rematch of the 1966 fall classic. ;)

Fred's Brim said...

Flat Breezy definitely needs to be kept alive

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Maybe this trade was less about shoring up the bullpen and more about appeasing Snoop Dogg.

karina said...

Relief pitcher for a couple of prospects? does it mean they are still in the race for the Doc? with a couple of young MLBers?

Wesley Vento said...

Ummmm, Flat Breezy? Yeah, that's now the coolest nickname on the team. Sorry Bison. Maybe if we start calling him Bizzison he regains the crown, but for now: Welcome the the Blue Crew Flat Breezy!

Josh S. said...

I don't like that. I'm going to call him Grimey.

Wesley Vento said...

He is I and I am him
Slim with the flattest Brim

What's my mutha f***in' name?

MR.F said...

Karina,
Aside from Josh Bell, the names mentioned for Halladay are still available. It'd take a lot to get Halladay. We'd probably have to give up most of our good-to-great prospects for Halladay (we actually don't have that many of them since most of them are nowon the big club). We'd be pretty sapped after. Of course, it is Halladay and we're in a good window to win, so maybe it's worth it.

Josh S. said...

I'm kidding. Flat Breezy is OK. It just doesn't roll off the tongue.

He doesn't leave the New Era sticker on too, does he?

MR.F said...

Karina,
Also, forgot to mention, I've heard nothing today about giving up any big leaguers for Halladay except for James MacDonald. No mention of Chad or Clayton (thank goodness).

Fred's Brim said...

that's awesome, Josh

Fred's Brim said...

The Brim Reaper is also one of his high quality nicknames.

Who gets sent down to make room for him? Brent?

karina said...

Fanerman, maybe trading good to great prospects is a risky move, since the core of the big league is young and healthy, it could give a window of time to rebuild within the farm, at the expense of getting someone who can help the team to go deeper into the playoffs.

Josh S. said...

"Who gets sent down to make room for him? Brent?"

As far as the 25-man goes, yeah, probably. They still need a 40-man spot, though.

Unless, of course, two guys on the 40-man happened to end up in Canada somehow.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Just heard Lamar Odom is coming back to the Lakers.

Josh S. said...

"Just heard Lamar Odom is coming back to the Lakers."

Oh good. We can take Vic the Brick off suicide watch now.

Orel said...

The Lakers, always stealing the Dodgers' thunder!

Wesley Vento said...

Bend, but do not break.

MR.F said...

Karina, that's a fair point. However, prospects are always useful to fill in here and there. Soon we'll be paying arbitration money to Kemp, Ethier, Chad, Clayton, Broxton, etc. So it'd be good to have cheaper alternatives here and there.

I'm not saying a Halladay trade is for sure a bad thing, but if we do get him, I hope we don't give up too much, and I hope we can re-sign him.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

I still think it is garbage that the Mets can get Johan for next to nothing, the Phills can get Lee for literally nothing, yet the Dodgers have to pay a kings ransom for Casey Blake, and if we want Halladay we need to give up Kershaw or Bills. Ridiculous!

Kyle Baker said...

Can we just call him Stampy?

I think I missed how "Flat Breezy" came to be his moniker. Explanation?

Leach down, Elbert up.

karina said...

Fanerman and Dusto, you both have a point.

Dusto, Manny became a Dodger after a very low price, because neither him or the Red Sox wanted each other.

"I hope we don't give up too much, and I hope we can re-sign him". Exactly.

Rumors, at this hour, say Toronto will keep Halladay. Other sources state that is a two team competition between the Dodgers and the Red Sox, with an edge for the Red Sox.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

(I would still rather have a power bat at first instead of Loney)

Josh S. said...

Dusty, he wears the brim of his cap perfectly flat, as you can see in pics earlier in the thread.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

With the team adding Sherrill and possibly adding another reliever, what is the possibility of them looking to move Broxton?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

-76%

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Dusto, you do realize they added Sherrill to strengthen the bullpen?

Wesley Vento said...

Sherrill was brought in to set up for Broxton, not replace him. Why would you trade a young, cheap, dominant closer when you're contending for a WS?

I agree I'd like a bigger bat at 1B. Victor Martinez plays catcher and 1st Base, and hits a ton. Just sayin'...

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Just trying to think like Ned.

Josh S. said...

Sherrill's closer experience will come in handy if Brox's toe becomes a more serious issue.

Kyle Baker said...

Agree...there is prolly more to the big toe situation that we know.

Josh S. said...

I can't hear big toe without thinking of this guy.

karina said...

Victor Martinez is a great bat,but i kinda see him as a AL player. He hits a ton, that's right, but he's not very good defensively. He's been improving throughout the years but ain't a star with a glove. I do think in the NL, where pitchers hit and therefoe bunt a lot, it's very important to have an above reliable in every position of the infield. He's also in a sort of slump right now.

Besides, he might want to stay in Cleveland unless the cheap ownership dump him due to his salary.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

karina- remember, Loney is only a league average defender.

karina said...

Dusto, but he sometimes makes spectacular plays, he's still young and he could develop very well.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

I know Loney is a "great" asset to the team, but I can't think of having him if he costs more than a couple million bucks. He's just not worth it. If given the opportunity, every player will make a "spectacular play". Even Mark Reynolds got a defensive highlight the other night on ESPN.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

come on Loney!!! do something!
