PCS Rankings & Prizes Revealed

So as mentioned, after tomorrow's puzzle, we're giving away our first set of prizes! There will be two prize options:

  1. The 24"x36" O-Dogg poster pictured below (stamped #00576 of 20,000), courtesy of SoSG Orel:
  2. The opportunity to create the second-ever reader-written Off-Day Puzzle. You can be Buzz Aldrin to Jose's Neil Armstrong. Or Jan Ullrich to Jose's Lance Armstrong. Or Kenny G to Jose's Louis Armstrong. Whichever metaphor you prefer, you will be granted the power to create a puzzle - either write the whole thing top-to-bottom as Jose did, or dream up the concept and send it to us and we'll write it up - and we'll use it as a future Off-Day Puzzle1.

So after tomorrow's puzzle, whoever sits atop the PCS Rankings will get their choice of the two prize options. Whoever is 2nd gets what's leftover (although the considerable responsibility of creating a puzzle can be declined if desired).

Anyhow, that's what's at stake. And it looks like it'll be a tight race for these two prizes. Here are the updated rankings:

2quadsevens and mr customer tied for first in Jose's Puzzle and each received 94 PCS Points, the average of the 1st and 2nd place point totals

3since jose created the last puzzle and thus had to sit it out, he was awarded his average score from the previous 6 puzzles, which was 38 points

Next puzzle, Thursday, June 11 (tomorrow), 7am. As a Grand Slam Puzzle it will be worth 150 points instead of the usual 100 (I know yesterday I said 120, but the guys at SoSG corporate have since increased our budget). So get some rest and good luck!

Creating a puzzle or taking that great looking poster. Whoever is in the top two spots is going to have a tough decision.

Just the top spot has the choice really. Second place gets a good prize either way. That's what I meant.

That's a cool poster.

No back-room deals between the 1st and 2nd place finishers!

I'm interested to see how tomorrow will pan out. Although the top 3 (quad, customer, and ubragg) have created a little separation from the rest of the pack, with the last puzzle worth 150 points I'd say the current top 7 all have a realistic chance of landing within the top 2.

Well, the top 3 would have to fail entirely for that to happen, I think - and that's not very likely! Still, it gives a good chance for the next "round". Your Grand Slam every 6 with prizes every 7 makes it sort of like the chance to get a triple-letter at both ends of an 8-letter (?) word in Scrabble - and about as likely!

One of these years I'll get up at 7:00 and read the puzzle correctly - both together. From previous experience, I think I'm more likely to be stumped by all the Grand Slams, however. We'll see.

Actually, only any 2 of the top 3 would have to entirely fail for no. 4 through 6 to land a top 2 spot. Which I think is a very real possibility. That goes for No. 7 as well, depending on one's definition of 'entirely fail'.

Of course, the person leaping upward would also have to be among the first solvers.

But as you mention, regardless of the above, any points will help significantly towards the next prize.
