Game 16 Thread: April 19 @ Rockies, 12.05p

Dodgers start Mark Hendrickson, LHP (0-0, 1.64) vs. Aaron Cook, RHP (0-0, 3.86)

Dodgers: 10-5 (1st place NL West, 0.5 GA, L1)
Rockies: 7-8 (4th place NL West, 3.0 GB, W2)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Nothing has been made official and it could change if Hendrickson is needed in a long-relief role on Wednesday. [SoSG: He wasn't needed Wednesday.] That said, he figures to get the call to replace Jason Schmidt and it will be a good test at Coors Field for Hendrickson, who was a bust as a starter after his acquisition last year but has reinvented himself as a long reliever.

Rockies: Cook has had three strong starts this season but has nothing to show for it, having seen each of his games slip away from the Rockies after his departure. He left with a 6-5 lead after six innings on Opening Day, pitched nine innings of one-run ball against San Diego in his second start (an extra-inning, 2-1 loss for the Rockies), and left a 3-3 game after six in his third start. With the exception of an uneven performance on Opening Day, he has been at his best, rising to the new challenges as the Rockies' No. 1 starter.

COMMENTS

Well, so much for the win streak, as the Dodgers got pounded by the Rockies. Look for the regular Dodgers to return to the lineup today; Russell Martin should be back at catcher (why 0-for-4 Mike Lieberthal was batting cleanup yesterday is unfathomable--every 1-through-8 slot in the order had a hit last night save Lieberthal). Let's hope we can get back on the win train tonight and earn a split (in yet another two-game mini-series brought to you by interleague play).

UPDATE

The lineup, via Inside the Dodgers:

Furcal, SS
Pierre, CF
Garciaparra, 1B
Kent, 2B
Gonzalez, LF
Martin, C
Ethier, RF
Betemit, 3B
Hendrickson, P

Looks like a day game, get that "boss button" ready. Hendrickson at least has the starters in to back him up.

Wow, I was amazed that Donelly didn't send Kent home on that single by Gonzo.

"In play, no out." The sweetest words in the English language...when your team is up.

Bases loaded for Big Bird! Don't swing, Hendrickson!

Don't swing! YOU EEDIOT

Delino DeShields said...

as Miyagi would say - Hendrick-son, paint the fence!

Orel said...

Why wasn't that a double play?

Alex Cora said...

High chopper OVER the mound, the SS had to field and his only play was to first. Not bad by Hightower to get his 2nd RBI of his career.

Orel said...

Longshanks with the RBI!

BTW, I would like to add that I just hit a triple to break a tie and put the Red Sox up in the 9th inning.

Congrats!

Stilts is cruising.

Alex Cora said...

Is he cruising in his VW, like the simpsons character?

"Hey everyone, look at this. This is the kid that laughs at everyone. Let's all laugh at him."

Hendrickson: 5 innings, 65 pitches. Impressive.

Alex Cora said...

Nice job stretch. Now rest up for the next start.

Orel said...

One run and they pull him?

Steve Sax said...

Wow, I come back from lunch and Hendrickson is gone. Darn.

Fins!

Now that Furcal is in the leadoff hole, why is he doing his impression of Juan Pierre (0-for-4 today with 3 LOB, .172 BA)?

Alex Cora said...

Looks like Grady had a pitch count on Herman Munster (see Dodgers Notes for today) and was up to 75 pitches. At least he got through 5 innings to rest the bullpen for the homestand.

Steve Sax said...

Betemit's 1-for-2 day has him raising his average to .121. He likely has at least one at bat left today, so let's see how it goes.

Nice job, Beims.

Steve Sax said...

Seven-pitch inning for the teetotaler! Nice job, Beimel.

Alex Cora said...

Both Beimel and Siato have a little hitch in their delivery right before they throw the ball. That must throw the batter off somewhat. Hawpe seemed to get started on his swing a little early and popped out.

Alex Cora said...

Andre the giant looked pretty slow on that steal attempt - that ball was in the dirt and the catcher still threw him out.

Steve Sax said...

Dammit Ethier! Betemit had a favorable 2-0 count!

Alex Cora said...

Come on, Wilson Can't Get a Hit would have struck out anyways. I don't understand why Grady wont play Valdez at 3rd. I don't care if it is a righty or lefty pitching, let the guy take some rips.

Steve Sax said...

Another good Beimel inning. One more and he could get a save.

Alex Cora said...

Looks like A-rod did it again. 10 homeruns in April, only 5 to break the record. That man is on FIRE. Hmmm, don't we need a 3rd baseman?

Steve Sax said...

Alex Cora is a winner! He correctly predicted that Betemit would be a loser (K swinging).

Alex Cora said...

Nice insurance run. Pierre had a solid swing.

Alex Cora said...

Kent just passed the Babe with that double. Congrats!

Steve Sax said...

3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Kent is indeed the man today. 8-1 Dodgers, going to the bottom of the ninth.

Charley just reminded us that if the Dodgers win they will be 7-3 on the road this year. Given they were the only team in the 2006 postseason with a losing road record, we are definitely getting off on the right foot.

SD is beating AZ 7-5; SF is beating the woeful St Louis 5-2 (ST Louis also lost a heartbreaker 12-inning game last night, failing to score a run in T12 when Pujols was caught stealing home). Both games in the bottom of the sixth.

Alex Cora said...

Broxton closes the door. Nice game by the dodgers. Look what happens when you play the starters and make a decent lineup card. GO BLUE!

Steve Sax said...

And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen! Dodgers move to 11-5, first team to 11 wins, and a full game ahead of AZ (pending the outcome of their game, in which they're losing 7-5 in the 6th).

Good night everybody!
