At-Game Recap: April 22 vs. Pirates

New sponsors, new motifs.

Last night's hero before the game.

Dodger Dog! Teacher, mother, secret lover.

"Remember, Juan, keep your eyes on the ball!"

PIRATES 7, DODGERS 5

NOTES

With three Dodger errors in the first three innings, there was definitely a feeling of a hangover from last night's game. Brett Tomko valiantly tried to shrug off the Pirates' early cheapie runs, but crumbled in the sixth. Chad Billingsley's poor seventh (0.1 IP, 2 ER) sealed the loss.

Juan Pierre: Sometimes he's the man, sometimes he's not. Today he was not.

The Dodgers have homered in three consecutive games (Ethier, Martin, Saenz).

INSIGNIFICANTIA

  • Attendance was about 46,000 and parking was a breeze. Late-inning rain helped to thin the crowd somewhat, but the Sunset lot was minimally occupied.
  • Olmedo Saenz's at-bat music: "Panama" by Van Halen.
  • Guess what the between-innings DodgerVision entertainment was after Juan Pierre muffed his catch? That's right, baseball bloopers! Strangely, Pierre's miscue was not included in the segment.
  • Coca-Cola quiz question: How many Hall of Famers have played for both the Dodgers and the Pirates?

Wow, not being a Simpsons fan, that was a pretty obscure reference.

Bunning, Kelley, and Kelly?

Lloyd Waner and Paul Waner too? I'm confused.

Arky Vaughan? Dazzy Vance?

Orel, where were your seats? Camera angle looks high, but Dodger Dog shot looks like you're from the yellow seats... explain!

Orel said...

Ha ha, I'll never tell!

The answer is 5. Arky Vaughan was among them.

Nice wrap up Orel. Good pics.

I know it's early in the season, but geez, I don't think I've ever seen a worse centerfielder. Pierre looks completely lost out there. I expect everything to be dropped -- if he even gets to the ball. Most of the time he seems to circle around like he has no idea where the ball is gonna land. Where's the speed? Shouldn't he be making it look easy? We know he can't get on base and he can't throw, but nobody told me he couldn't catch either. He's a 1-tool player. Yipee! Why isn't he in left field? Or playing for the Nationals? And yet, the Dodgers are winning despite his adventures. Go figure.

How come my password doesn't work anymore? Stupid google

Amen, cigarcow.

cigarcow -- re the password not working anymore -- my wife had the same problem. I have a suspicion that it's directly tied to the old Blogger/new Blogger conversion; the old Blogger had an entirely separate system of passwords and userids. The new one is all Google, so you have to have a Google ID to make it work. (This is just a hypothesis at the moment, but it would seem to make sense.)

Incidentally, the picture of the Dodger dog startled me at first; what is the sliver of flesh shown at the bottom? At first I thought, for no reason I can discern, that it was an amputee's stump covered by a white yarmulke or a brassiere cup. But then I realized there was no way you could really fit that into the picture; where is the amputee it would have belonged to?

Oh, of course, it's a palm.

Don't ask me to make sense of that. I certainly couldn't.

Rob, are you making fun of my stump???

Many have inquired about the Sons to determine their identities. I guess one thing we won't reveal is our collective number of limbs...

I have also noticed that the Beer-to-Dog gap has shrunk to +7. Bad, bad Orel.

I will have to extend Beer's lead on Wednesday night.
