Stow Family Sues Dodgers, Repays Funds

From "Bryan Stow family suing Dodgers" by Ramona Shelburne at ESPNLosAngeles.com:

The family of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow, who was brutally beaten in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day, filed a civil suit against the Dodgers in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday morning.

The suit seeks unspecified damages to cover Stow's future medical care and as compensation for the economic damages to Stow and his two children.

"It's fairly simple," said Thomas Girardi, the attorney representing the family. "The Dodgers have shown a total disregard for public safety. They've gotten rid of security people. They've had all these incidents at their games, more than other teams. There's also a known gang presence. What did they think was going to happen?"

Girardi said that the family insisted on repaying much of the money that has been raised for the Bryan Stow Fund since the attack, except for a scholarship for Stow's children that was donated by Giants slugger Barry Bonds because it "means so much to them."

This lawsuit seemed inevitable, and although it's the family's right to do what they will with — or without — the money raised for Bryan Stow, I hope they repaid it for legal reasons only.

I am not surprised.

What a sad, screwed up situation.

A lot of Dodger fans that contributed money are not going to take this well, especially after that Bonds bit.

^ Not saying that's the right or wrong way to feel, just that a lot are going to feel that way.

Only gang activity I have seen at the Stadium is the SOSG gang. They are pretty harmless excluding the random dry humping by one member.

^and when Paul says "one member" he means "one member."

I think you are right Josh S.

Gotta admit, even as a Dodger fan I think this was the right thing to do. McCourt cut security to the bone and now Stow is f'd up for life. Ol' Frankie didn't administer the beat down, but his cheap-ass "management" created the conditions for it to happen.

I think that this is wrong, we are less than two months out from the event. He's still in the hospital and hasn't had a chance to regain consiousness. Hell we still don't know if he's going to make it! It would be sad if the family goes through this lawsuit, then god forbid, he does die. Then they pull a winklevoss and want more money!

As for repayment, how? I have gone to many events here in the valley and donated well over $100 to the cause, plus raised more from others. Do I get repaid? Or do we have Frank put it all away for the lawsuit?

I think they should just wait and see, I know it's a sucky situation all around, but rash judgement never helps!

He is worth more in his current state than if he dies.

Everyone is claiming this is a gang issue or a lack of security issue.Fights happen without a gangs involvement and more security may or may not have been able to intervene in time. Maybe if the dude had not been running his mouth he would not have been stomped.

If you want peace of mind and to feel safe, stay away from confrontation.

I'm at a loss to understand the whole repayment piece. This is a slap to folks who, in all good faith and with all good intentions, made a real attempt to show they care and to make a fiscal sacrifice to help defray costs to the Stow family. Why would you snub your nose at that?

Look, no one can take what happened back, but we can at least show we do not condone what transpired and, as a community, show support for the victim and his family. Turning their back on that is hurtful to right-thinking fans and Angelenos.

Dusty,

The whole thing is sad and strange. So many things don't add up but that is usually how it happens when suspects are on the prowl and Police keep a tight grip on info.

Someday we will have discuss the what when where and hows on a bar napkin. The "Whys" I will only discuss if I am toasted and Mr. C is there playing the harp.

I refuse to have any meaningful face to face discussion without the benefit of bar napkins. That's where and how I do my best work.
