Post-Game 41 Thread: The Abyss At The Bottom Of The Dodgers' Lineup Rises, Swallowing Kemp and Ethier

D'BACKS 4, DODGERS 1

It's common knowledge that the bottom of the Dodgers' order--with Rod Barajas (batting .235), James Loney (.230), Juan Uribe (.200), and whoever is in left field--sucks. It basically renders the second half of our lineup useless, such that if Ethier and Kemp can't tally RBIs, we are through.

So Don Mattingly decided to go absolutely wild today and bat five through eight as follows: Loney (who went 1-for-4, 4 LOB), Dioner Navarro (0-for-4 with 3Ks and 4 LOB; now at .176), Juan Castro (0-for-2 before being replaced by Uribe, who walked twice), and Tony Gwynn Jr (0-for-2). Total and complete impotence.

And it didn't stop there. In fact, the tar pit actually rose a bit, engulfing #3 Andre Ethier (0-for-4 with 4 LOB, breaking his on-base-streak at 37 games, fifth-longest in Dodgers history) and #4 Matt Kemp (0-for-3 with 2 Ks; Kemp 0-fered last night as well). That left only Jamey Carroll and Aaron Miles to get hits, and though they tallied five of the team's six hits, that wasn't enough to scratch out more than one run in the loss.

Ted Lilly must have been deflated after seeing a bottom of the first that started with two leadoff singles, and then continued with an Ethier K, Kemp BB, Loney one-pitch fly out, and Navarro K. Lilly was so flustered, he came back out and gave up four runs, his only bad inning (6.0 IP). The bullpen pitched a scoreless three, but with offense this impotent, they could have been out there for 18 innings and we wouldn't have tied the game. Dodgers fall to three below .500 and four back of the division lead.

Yankees have only won one more game than we have.

That's two positive comments, Karina!

I just looked up James Loney's slugging percentage on Baseball Reference. It said "No."

Watching BOS vs NY. Bleacher Creatures just included Posada in their roll call even though he's benched again today. Great production for ESPN to have caught that.

but Dusty, they have my son! :(

you know, I'm tired about our pessimism. This is a sport of miracles and we shouldn't give up on the Dodgers 'till they really out of the race.

Just sayin'

Your son just threw the ball away on a throw to first. Charged with a passed ball. Started a rally for Red Sox.

I still have no love for Russell J.Martin.

The J stands for jack-ass.

rbnlaw said...

And Juan Uribe replaced Juan Castro in the game; Don Mattingly said he couldn't tell the difference.

I love Emo Juan Uribe.

Steve Sax said...

@rbnlaw: Sounds like we've got Juan too many.

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S: It may not happen, but it keeps adding salt to my open festering wound.

I'm going tomorrow, btw.

And Tuesday.

To answer Sax's question from the GT: I will not be in town during the Fourth of July weekend. I will be in New York.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Joe West will fly in on his pterodactyl to destroy these two teams, they're taking so long. Hopefully.

Steve Sax said...

Joe West tried but the pterodactyl couldn't bear his weight and crashed into a volcano

I am available to drink Dusty and Marla's drinks.

At Saxy

What level are you on Tuesday? I still need to get my ticket so I'll just get o e on whatever level you will be lording over.

Kyle Baker said...

I'll again put out the Bat signal that my patio is available to host some homies on any given afternoon to quaff some lager, devour some dogs, and catch a game.

Josh S. said...

I want a Kershaw bobblehead, but I don't want to suffer through terrible baseball to get it.

Maybe I'll buy one on eBay while someone punches me in the balls. Same thing.

Josh S. said...

Oh hey, the Red Sox won three games over the Yankees to get to .500! That means we get tomorrow off from work, right?

Kyle Baker said...

Josh you gave me my going to sleep thought for the night. All I can picture is your scrolling around on EBay while some midget punches you in the balls.

I realize that you didn't actually mention a midget but I just thought it was appropriate to consider as part of this imagery.

I am starting to worry about my own hand.

Fuck when did Neeeebs have another e?

Paul said...

At least reform laws make this fourth e not eligible to governmental entitlements.
