Post-Game 29 Thread: Ethier With A Side Dish Of Nothing

PADRES 7, DODGERS ZILCH

1981 Retro Day at Dodger Stadium was supposed to evoke memories of that championship season. Instead, the Dodgers tried their best to re-enact September 30, 1981, in which they were shutout by the Padres at home. With the exception of the main course of Andre Ethier's rocket shot up the first base line, which skittered away from Brad Hawpe's glove, allowing Ethier to reach--extending Ethier's streak to 27 games, tied for third place for the longest hitting streak in Dodgers history--the other Dodgers' side dishes were non-existent.

Most notably impotent were Tony Gwynn Jr. (0-for-3), Juan Uribe (0-for-4), James Loney (0-for-3), and Dioner Navarro (0-for-3 in his first start of the year). Jon Garland was passable, with 8 Ks over 6.0 IP that included only one bad three-run inning in the second. But when recently-activated Hong-Chih Kuo loaded the bases in the ninth, leading to a four-run debacle across three relievers (each of whom could only register one out), the rout was on.

The Dodgers drop the series against the Padres. Luckily the Rockies and Giants lost too, so we remain in second place in the NL West, 4.5 games back.

@Dusty, sorry you had to see that one. Glad you got a lousy t-shirt, however.

Gave you context on the ass-slapping in the GT.

I hate to be negative. But while I am usually energized by a trip to the Yard, today I was not. Not just because of the scoreline. One main thing that stuck in my craw was the much-hyped '81 retrospective. While the pre-game show did a good job of showing a re-cap of that season's successful World Series win, the only person from the team who was to be found on the field was Rick Monday, and that's because he works for the team. Tommy didn't come out, nor did Fernando. That's fine, they are there all the time and are unquestioned True Blue. Jerry Reuss didn't, but hey, he was just there recently. But no one else was there. Clearly, McCourt's woes as well as the whole MLB and ownership situation is keeping folks at arms length. It was just sad not to have a lot of those WS heroes there on the field for the ceremony. I had brought my good camera and everything.

@Sax

Thx for that context. Crude remark left in the GT.

Still not sure when I will be back to the Ravine. I need to try and go. Not sure I am up for a 3 hour drive to see these guys.

I want to buy that bobblehead mini-plan, but they're not giving me many reasons to pull the trigger.

I have no real desire to see this team outside of the afternoon, half-priced food and non-alcoholic beverage games.

Kyle Baker said...

If the beer were half-priced on those days, would you be more inclined to attend, MLASC?

(slaps Spank's ass)

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The half-priced beer would certainly mask the ineptitude I would have to witness in order to obtain it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I have to go back to the all-you-can-eat section again. Went three years ago and it was fun.

Kyle Baker said...

Indeed, MLASC, indeed.

Also: Yeah, I had a good time the time I went to the AYCE section. I remember Josh went abt two seasons or so ago and had a good (if not caloric-heightened) time.

NicJ said...

I've heard complaints of the AYCE pavilion being purposely understaffed this year.

NicJ said...

Haven't been to a fame this year. Probably going to bobblehead night though. I'm a sucker for worthless crap, just like Ned.

NicJ said...

Game^

Stupid phone.

NicJ said...

P.S. Dodgers are poopy.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

From what I've seen, the AYCE section hasn't exactly been filled to capacity.

Fred's Brim said...

We'll get it going again soon. We just can't be relying on dudes like Miles in the long term

Fred's Brim said...

Anybody know how much teams get from tickets resold at places like Stubhub?

Fred's Brim said...

@DB how big do the '81 shirts go? I am probably gonna nab one off ebay. I see there are 4 up there already

Fred's Brim said...

mmm pulled-pork sangwich

Paul said...

I really think it sucks that Either and Kemp have no one to set the table. They could have crazy numbers so far. Guess it keeps their price tag down somewhat.

Steve Sax said...

The Phils are getting two-hit by Princeton man Chris Young (through seven)? Wow.

Fred's Brim said...

@Sax are there pitching badges?

NicJ said...

Chin-Lung Hu strikes out to end the inning. Always a dodger.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The line has blurred between being a Dodger and being a Met.

Josh S. said...

Bullpen issues aside, we GOTS to do something about our infield. I know we're besieged with injuries, but even our healthy infield is two old guys, a fat free-swinger (not a fat-free swinger), and the ghost of a guy who had 9 RBI at Coors once.

NicJ said...

Why does fox news spell it "Usama" I thought it was "Osama"

Paul said...

Beantown talking about getting Dre again. I don't think I could stomach that. At least we have Chadley.

Love how the east coast is so self involved they can make a Dodger player's hitting streak about them.

NicJ said...

I would say fuck it and call up the human error machine Dee Gordon

Gordon SS
Uribe 3B
Carroll 2B
Loney/Sands platoon at 1B

They need to stop showing Philly fans during this game. My IQ is dropping and I feel like punching someone.

How about a Bin Laden is dead game thread? Come on,Sons!

NicJ said...

I was going to ask why ESPN didn't cut to a national news feed for the announcement but we know if you are watching a Phils game you are probably a fan of evil anyways.

Kyle Baker said...

@NicJ

The actual, non-Americanized spelling is with a "U".

NicJ said...

Don't ask me, iPhone auto correct.

Let's just call Bin Laden a fucking rat.

Trump wants to see Bin Laden's birth certificate.

Josh S. said...

Twitter has really cornered the market on jokes about this (both good and bad). Late night talk show hosts might as well not even bother mentioning it tomorrow.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Vegas should run odds on which joke will be butchered tomorrow. $50 says Leno opens with some kind of Trump/death certificate bit.

NicJ said...

Leno is still on?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Unfortunately yes.
