Game 32 Thread: May 4 vs. Cubbies, 12n

"Fly, my pretty!"

Ted Lilly (2-2, 4.45) vs. Carlos Zambrano (3-1, 4.91).

Precious little joy in Dodgertown these days, so let's focus on the good: Andre Ethier, owner of the second-longest hitting streak in Dodgers history (tied with Zack "Cream of" Wheat). Ethier is currently at 28 29 straight games, with a decent chance at 29 30 — being 8 for 18 lifetime against Zambrano.

That game thread post sounds eerily familiar...

Win today, win the series, "earn" a .500 homestand, head to New York, take 2 of 3 vs the Delino's Muts, make FB and Poppa FB happy

May the Fourth be with you 'Dre.

rbnlaw said...

Can we please rise above mediocre? And can we get Brox on the disabled list?

Not saying we should injure him, just decalre him disabled. Or should it be unable.

karina said...

May the Fourth be with you all.

karina said...

Epale!

karina said...

Guys, just saw on Twitter Brox has pain on his shoulder.

spank said...

Brox......You're fired.

spank said...

Whatsupale!

Wicks said...

Broxton is hurt? Shocking...

Steve Sax said...

Brox may be hurting, but WE are the ones in pain

Josh S. said...

I'm going on the DL for the pain in my ass this team has caused.

Also, my favorite Emo Juan Uribe to date.

Steve Sax said...

why are there no badges available for the MIN/CWS game today? Did Liriano's no-no make the badge function crash?

karina said...

@Sax badges for that game are available on my side.

Josh S. said...

D'oh! Ethier scratched with elbow inflammation. Mattingly said he could still pinch-hit, which makes me nervous.

Jason said...

@Sax - I didn't have badges either until I refreshed the page.

Jason said...

Gwynn, Jr. - LF
Miles - 2B
Gibbons - RF
Kemp - CF
Uribe - SS
Loney - 1B
Navarro - C
Mitchell - 3B
Lilly - P

I bet Lilly regrets signing with the Dodgers on days like today. Good god that is a horrible looking lineup (non-Kemp division).

Josh S. said...

That lineup is wrong. Navarro is playing Dropper.

spank said...

Stadium should be empty today.

Josh S. said...

Matty & The Isotopes.

spank said...

No Sands? It's a christmas miracle in May.

Fred's Brim said...

Matty and the 2001 AAA B-level Prospects

Josh S. said...

Injuries are killing us. Wrap Matt and the starting pitchers in bubble wrap between games.

spank said...

Let's go Royals!

Josh S. said...

On the badge tip: Does anyone remember the little cardboard coins with baseball players you could collect from the bottoms of Slurpee cups? Am I crazy or do these badges not look exactly like those?

Also, Loney double among today's badges. Super rare! 1 in every 10,000 boxes!

Jason said...

Did Ethier catch the elbow inflammation from Blake?

Jason said...

89 in LA right now? I'd take that, it's 53 here right now.

Jason said...

I'm so confused by that Navarro play. What am I supposed to do with all of my expectations of his play from here on out?

Jason said...

FB, having a rough day?

spank said...

Dinner went after that foul ball like it was a plate of enchiladas.

Fred's Brim said...

@Jason - just needed to vent

We're gonna win today

Jason said...

Waw, the TV lineup graphic actually makes the lineup look worse.

Jason said...

The name Darwin Barney still makes me laugh.

Jason said...

Soriano continues his impressive play in left field.

spank said...

Miles with a double? Wow!

Steve Sax said...

Cubs' first three: Starlin, Darwin, Marlon

Somewhere, Chris Berman is salivating (and not just 'cause he's hungry)

Steve Sax said...

Ethier was a late scratch with an inflamed elbow, but available to PH.

Watch Mattingly forget about the streak and put Andre in as an eighth-inning PH.

Jason said...

Gibbons should be allowed to bat with this until his vision gets fixed.

Jason said...

@Spank - to be fair, Miles double was Soriano assisted.

Steve Sax said...

I had a debate last night with my friend, a Cubs fan, on whether Manny or Soriano was worse in LF.

Jason said...

That is a debate with no end. Like who is worse at play by play, Steiner or Collins?

Jason said...

Vin telling a story while Urine is batting and ends it with the line ".. and a bell rings. Most of the time for lunch or dinner."

Dean said...

I see Alburquerque is playing the Cubs today.

Jason said...

Come on Loney double badge!

Jason said...

Eh, I'll take it.

spank said...

@ Jason

Did you get a Soriano assist badge on Miles double?

Jason said...

Wow, Gwynn has a arm. I never knew that.

spank said...

I was going to crush my computer if that had gone out.

Dean said...

Keep Gwynn in left, put Sands at first. And never pitch Broxton again. Might just give us a .500 club

spank said...

Boooooooooooo!

Jason said...

Dean, if it helps Broxton had an MRI today.

Jason said...

My favorite tidbit from today's story about Broxton getting the MRI:

Mattingly said one of the immediate issues was to find an MRI tube large enough for Broxton to get his 300-pound frame into.

"I'm serious," said Mattingly.

Steve Sax said...

Loney singled back in the second and of course went no further

We suuuuuuuck

Jason said...

Is the pitcher walking off the mound before strike three is even called the equivalent of a bat flip before the ball clears the fence for a home run?

Steve Sax said...

That's funny, I'm right near an MRI facility. I'll keep an eye out for a 300-lb guy with shattered confidence.

Steve Sax said...

Jason: who was that "early mound walkoff" regarding? Who was at the plate? Forward or backward K?

Jason said...

Batting a blind guy third is an interesting experiment by Mattingly.

Jason said...

@Sax - Byrd at the plate for a backwards K by Lilly to end the top of the 4th. Lilly was 4 steps towards the dugout when strike 3 was signaled.

Jason said...

Urine gets hit, again. I know he's big, but come on!

Jason said...

Who is the next infielder to get called up from AAA? The Human Error Machine?

Josh S. said...

It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that all three of Gibbons' at-bats since coming back from "getting his eyes fixed" have been strikeouts.

Dean said...

@ Jason
I guess it does help some. Now why can't he be honest and tell everyone he's hurt? Instead of costing his teammates games? Can you ever trust him to be honest with the training staff?

Dean said...

Dumb as a Brox of Rox.

Jason said...

Well, the blind guy has an arm, too.

Jason said...

Urine got spiked in the same spot he was hit by the pitch. That is going to be one HUGE bruise.

Jason said...

That one deserved a bat flip.

Josh S. said...

I can't decide if Russ Mitchell's Gameday photo is hilarious or terrifying.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Epale Hay Hay

Josh S. said...

Here's the pic.

What in the hell is on his hat?

Jason said...

Definitely hilarious.

Jason said...

Another bat flip worthy shot.

Josh S. said...

Glad we could help set Carlos Pena straight.

Jason said...

They should make Scooby-Doo-villain style masks of each Dodger batter for Matt Kemp so he can take each at-bat the rest of the way.

Jason said...

I'd describe Zambrano's hairstyle as "a reverse Larry David."

Jason said...

Lot of bat flipping going on here today.

MR.F said...

Le sigh.

Jason said...

Time to get more beer*.

*By beer, I mean tea. Damn no-drinking-in-the-office rule.

Josh S. said...

This is the third year of Lilly's deal, right?

Nostradamus said...

Be back for the Laker thread.I'll be drinking Steel reserve so beware.

Josh S. said...

A run?

Josh S. said...

Who wanted Matt to bat for everybody?

Josh S. said...

Oh shit, it's almost Free Comic Book Day again.

Josh S. said...

Hunchy and the strike zone are not friends this year.

Shawn Green said...

I need some half-priced beer to get through this one.

Steve Lopez live blogging from the game. Some tidbits:

B for Brooklyn

[Updated at 1:26 p.m.: Oh, now I get it. The Dodgers have a "B" on their hats today, so I thought they sent the B squad onto the field. Gibbons, Mitchell, Miles, Navarro, Gwinn. But the B is for Brooklyn Dodgers.

I was going to wear my Brooklyn ballcap to the park today but feared I'd be savagely beaten by idiot fans who thought the B stood for Boston, as in Red Sox. Fifth inning. Guy named Soto, with two homers all season, just hit his third. Cubs 1, Dodgers 0.]

SLIPPING INTO COMAS

[Updated at 1:45 p.m.: Now a guy named Pena, batting eighth in the Cubs lineup and hitting .162, just hit a home run that nearly landed in Eagle Rock.

Cubs 2, Dodgers 0.

A fan threw the ball back onto the field; probably someone worried that Frank McCourt can't afford any new ones. Now Marlon Byrd, a Cub with no homers, just launched a three-run blast into orbit.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 0.

All the fans near me have slipped into comas, much like the Dodgers themselves.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason said...

The Dodgers seem to have broken out the "Barry Bonds" defense for Carlos Pena.

Jason said...

Plus sides for today:

* Kuo got over the yips
* Padilla got his daily shvitz in
* Broxton did not blow a save

and, of course, Vin.

Nostradamus said...

Not to be confused with the Chewbacca Defense.

this what happens when I'm working and not paying any attention to the game.

Can I add Loney's two singles together into a double and collect my 7-Eleven Slurpee badge?

I'm continuing to track this year's team vs. last year's, to try and get a sense of how bad a season we're in for.

After 32 games:
2010: 15-17
2011: 15-17

Hmmm. The difference is, the 2010 team was two games into a 9-game winning streak (I know!) and those two wins brought them UP to 15-17.

karina said...

Josh, but they look worse this season

*cries*

Josh S. said...

@karina: 2010 started off way worse. They started awful and trended upward in May. This year, they started mediocre, and are trending downward in May.

karina said...

get it!since they haven't had an upward, that's why they look worse :(

Paul said...

But last year we played the Yankees!

Paul said...

If you rearrange turds they are still turds. We suck big time. Like you all said all We can hope for is that Andre isn't in a Red Sox Uni and Kemp in a Yankees Uni next year....oh and hope Half this team isn't in a Dodger uniform.

Post-Game Thread (finally) up.

Now, back to my despair.
