Game 81 Thread: June 30 vs. Phillies, 1p

Stephen Fife (2-2, 3.41 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (7-4, 3.46)

One is reminded of Buster Poindexter today: hot hot hot. The day game today should be miserably hot with the temperatures expected to reach well over a hundred. Feels like it's 145 already. And Hanley Ramirez; since coming back from the DL, he's hot hot hot, including dropping a 3-run bomb last night estimated at 441 feet and seeming to get a hit every time he's up.

You know who else is hot hot hot? The new pre-game ceremonies co-host at Dodger Stadium.

So grab a few cold ones, find some shade, tune in with Vin, and settle in for today's game that could mean a series win before heading off to take on the Rockies.

Matt Gurrier DFA'd. He stormed out really pissed off. Chris Withrow recalled to take his spot. Hopefully he will only take his spot, not his pitching ability.

BJ Killeen said...

Wow! Big news... Thanks Dusty...today may be the only day I'm glad I'm not there...prefer the coolness of our air-conditioned house!

BJ Killeen said...

Big scoop, Dusty...not even on the D.com site..

Paul said...

Just heard Spanky left the house in no clothes.

Paul said...

Bullpen needed a kick in the pants. Hopefully these new guys can pick it up.

Hideo Nomo said...

Out on yer rear, Guerrier!

Fred's Brim said...

wow on the Guerrier news
What are the chances he's picked up by another team like Arizona or the Gnats and ends up being a pain in our ass later this season?

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

@fred chances are really good. Isn't that how it always plays out!

Dusty Baker said...

Gurrier apparently has a contract situation where it would be awfully expensive for a new team to pick up a really shitty expensive.

Paul said...

Padres lost. Diamondbacks are losing.

Dusty Baker said...

^pitcher, I meant.

karen said...

@FB & Dusty's Toothpick...Chances are huge that garear will come back to haunt us. It truly does always seem to happen.

Read Cody Ross, just for starters.

BJ Killeen said...

Ya beat me to the post Paul!

Dusty Baker said...

On the sofa now, Vinny!

Steve Sax said...

Lead off double by the Phillies in the first, but they don't score. We are lucky

Cliff Beefpile said...

Sweatin' my balls off, Vinny.

Dusty Baker said...

Naw, Sax, we're good.

Well, actually, you're probably right. We're lucky.

Fred's Brim said...

throw strikes, stupid!

Cliff Beefpile said...

Was Ruiz on the 'roids? What the hell did he get suspended 25 games for?

Fred's Brim said...

great throw and tag!

Dusty Baker said...

@Cliff

I was just wondering the same thing. Where did I miss that?

Dusty Baker said...

April 28, 2013:

"NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Ruiz set out from Pennsylvania on Saturday night for a 125-mile drive to New York City, where he could finally rejoin the Philadelphia Phillies.

A long trip, sure, but one he had been waiting all month to make.

"I was real happy on the way," Ruiz said. "It was a nice feeling that everything was over."

Philadelphia's steady catcher returned to the lineup Sunday after serving a 25-game suspension for using a banned amphetamine.

Ruiz, an All-Star last season, batted fifth as the Phillies tried for a three-game sweep of the New York Mets. He said he was glad to be back with the team and had put the penalty behind him, though it was hard to watch his teammates play without him because he felt as though he wasn't doing anything to help.

Philadelphia opened 11-14 minus Ruiz, who said supportive teammates kept in touch with text messages throughout his suspension.

Affectionately known as "Chooch," the 34-year-old Ruiz had a career year in 2012 when he batted .325 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs in 114 games. He missed a little more than a month with a foot injury.

Ruiz's suspension was announced on Nov. 27 following his second positive test. An initial positive for a stimulant does not trigger a suspension, only that the player must undergo follow-up testing.

The catcher apologized in a statement, saying he was "sincerely regretful" for his mistake "in taking a prohibited stimulant." He apologized to teammates and fans again at spring training.

Ruiz reportedly tested positive for Adderall, an amphetamine commonly used to control attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Asked on Sunday whether he took any steps with Major League Baseball to get an exemption for his medicine, Ruiz said: "I don't know, man. I don't have anything to say about that.""

Fred's Brim said...

@Dusties he was using amphetamines

BJ Killeen said...

D'bags lose. :-)

Fred's Brim said...

so annoying

Dusty Baker said...

Sorry, it's hot here and I'm feeling surly.

Surly factor: 7.25

Steve Sax said...

Wow it is hot out there

Dusty Baker said...

Dbags lost again, so Dodgers would be 4 games back with a win today.

We were 9.5 games back just 8 days ago!

But we need to win today, so let's get back to this one.

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax

Are you "out there" or are you just noting the temp?

Dusty Baker said...

Got him! Sittdown, Chase!

Dusty Baker said...

Fife the di-dawg gets something started with a single!

Fred's Brim said...

cripes - why is he at the top of our lineup?

Cliff Beefpile said...

Aw hell, Fife.

Fred's Brim said...

yeesh that's stupid
at least Puig gets to lead off next inning

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

That's funny, gameday says "pick off attempt." Isn't Fife on 1b? Silly gameday.

Fred's Brim said...

oh blue! where was that pitch?

Fred's Brim said...

good inning

Fred's Brim said...

Puig has been abusing Young today

BJ Killeen said...

Young having trouble holding on to Puig's balls. Hehe.

Fred's Brim said...

hmmm

Steve Sax said...

Puig on second, one out... Come on blue!

Dusty Baker said...

Per Bill Shaikin, "Puig now at .429, needs 1 H to tie Steve Sax's monthly rookie record (43) for #Dodgers."

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty: I thought about going to today's game on the fly, but the 900-degree temps dissuaded me. Just went out of the house to run an errand and almost melted. Glad I'm not at the stadium today...

Steve Sax said...

Puig is trying to break my monthly record?!

Dusty Baker said...

Puig hit, Puig steal, HanRam blast to left...I could get used to this.

Fred's Brim said...

Hanley!

Steve Sax said...

Puig scores! 1-0 LA

Cliff Beefpile said...

FUCK! Do NOT hurt yourself, Hanley!

Dusty Baker said...

Looks like Hanley almost broke his left leg off on that steal. Jesus, guys, stay healthy out there.

Paul said...

Hanley rakes.

Paul said...

Is he okay?

Fred's Brim said...

please don't be hurt

Dusty Baker said...

He seems ok, but maybe grimacing a bit taking his lead at second.

Fred's Brim said...

maybe cool it on the stealing, mmkay, Donnie?

Fred's Brim said...

Looks like Hanley's grabbing his upper groiney region

Fred's Brim said...

take your time, Matty
swat one the other way

Dusty Baker said...

Per Dodgers PR:

"Yasiel Puig's 42 hits are tied w/ Bob Elliott (1939) for the 2nd-most all-time in the 1st month of a career"

Cliff Beefpile said...

Kemped! Finally an RBI.

Fred's Brim said...

YES - attaboy, Matty!

Cliff Beefpile said...

"Yasiel Puig's 42 hits are tied w/ Bob Elliott (1939) for the 2nd-most all-time in the 1st month of a career"

He's an all-star, Bochy! You twat.

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

I thought thought was going to K. Nice hit on 1-2 count , and shitty pitch by Kendrick!

Fred's Brim said...

bawk bawk!

Fred's Brim said...

way to keep us going, AJ

Cliff Beefpile said...

Hit(s)! Run(s)!

Fred's Brim said...

Jerry!

Fred's Brim said...

OK didawg, another good inning please

BJ Killeen said...

3 is good. 6 would be better!

Dusty Baker said...

Fife should have Tribe as his walkup music, no?

Jason said...

Epale y'all. I was looking at the roster around 10 this morning and was wondering why Guerrier wasn't listed. I thought I missed a DFA news blurb during my work induced blackout of the past several months. Looks like I emerged from said blackout at just the right time.

Ah crap, the Mariners are reairing the no-hitter against the Dodgers from last season. I was at that game which was painful enough. Way to ruin my Sunday afternoon Seattle Root Sports!

Steve Sax said...

That's a pretty good fourth inning there

3-0 LA through four

Dusty Baker said...

Revere on his little horsey.

Dusty Baker said...

Jason, good to hear from you, man. I was beginning to think you and Stubbs were stuck in the transit zone of the Moscow airport.

Fred's Brim said...

Ecuador has refused Stubbs' entry even though he never asked

Fred's Brim said...

that'll work!

Dusty Baker said...

Stubbs didn't stand a chance for Ecuadorian entry after that botched salamander heist when he tried to smuggle out the slimy amphibians in a drum set during a particularly unsuccessful Flaming Menudos tour stop there in 1978.

Fred's Brim said...

@Dusty - Butter?
4-finger ring just so Fifer could score

Cliff Beefpile said...

Pweeeeeeg!

Fred's Brim said...

triple! holy damn

Cliff Beefpile said...

Even Gonzalez can make to second on that double.

Dusty Baker said...

Just your average pop fly triple for Puig. Nothing to see.

Fred's Brim said...

I mean everyone knows how Ecuadorians feel about salamanders. And now Stubbs knows too

Fred's Brim said...

AG!

Dusty Baker said...

Not no Parkay, not no margarine. Simply buttah.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Come on, Ethier. Ratchet up your trade value.

Fred's Brim said...

OK kid, how about another clean inning

Cliff Beefpile said...

I'd heard Stubbs was trying to leak info to the press about the Sons and the Menudos, but found no takers.

Dusty Baker said...

@Cliff

I'm pretty sure NSA already has all the information they need about the Sons and FMs.

Fred's Brim said...

excellent stuff, kid!

Fred's Brim said...

go the other way, Matty

Fred's Brim said...

attaboy, AJ

Orel said...

Is Fife becoming our #4 pitcher?

Cliff Beefpile said...

The Phils are really sticking with Kendrick. I guess their 'pen really is that bad.

Fred's Brim said...

nice work, Jerry

Fred's Brim said...

cmon, kid, get the bunt down

Cliff Beefpile said...

Nice to see Fife say something to Kendrick on the way back to the dugout.

Fred's Brim said...

He is our #25 bunter

Steve Sax said...

Skip has got to stop this one-pitch-AB crap

Dusty Baker said...

BRA up 1-0 early over ESP.

Fred's Brim said...

but Saxy, he's the gritty, speedy guy that you need at the top of your lineup!

Fred's Brim said...

I prefer BRAs off, not up

Fred's Brim said...

OK kid, one more good one

Dusty Baker said...

Howard went from Howard to not Howard fairly quickly, didn't he?

I know as soon as I saw that he'll take one out now.

Steve Sax said...

@FB: ...and unlike Brandon League, Skip can pitch too

Dusty Baker said...

The Dodger bullpen has those landscaping stones behind it that resemble tombstones, like the graves of so many failed Dodger relievers. #RIPGurrier

Cliff Beefpile said...

There's no doubt a tombstone in there for Broxton in game 4 of the '09 LCS.

Orel said...

Have we ID'd the unnamed co-hostess yet?

Steve Sax said...

Strike em out throw em out! Nice DP there dodgers!

Orel said...

Shitty day for Rollins. Doesn't get the call when Puig left the bag after his steal, and now gets CS to end the inning.

Hideo Nomo said...

I FUCKING LOVE STRIKE HIM OUT THROW HIM OUTS!!!

Dusty Baker said...

@Cliff

There are two tombstones right next to each other for Broxton.

Paul said...

Another great start by the Fifester.

Jason said...

Puig a HR short of the cycle. This MUST happen.

Paul said...

Amazing.

Paul said...

Dammit!

Cliff Beefpile said...

I'm more interested in Lady Luck from the other night.

Fred's Brim said...

damn
he had no lead from second

Jason said...

Making outs are not helping you get a chance at that cycle, Yasiel.

Fred's Brim said...

ok fellas, how about another clean inning?

Fred's Brim said...

OK Jose, throw strikes

Fred's Brim said...

I like his Labradoodle hair

spank said...

i never knew Fiona Apple was a Dodgers fan.

Fred's Brim said...

whoooosh!

Fred's Brim said...

101!

Fred's Brim said...

nice inning, kiddo!

Hideo Nomo said...

GET ME A DOMINGUEZ SHIRT! I DON'T CARE IF THEY AREN'T MAKING THEM YET! JUST GET ME A SHIRT THAT SAYS DOMINGUEZ ON IT!

Orel said...

I remember Lady Luck!

Dusty Baker said...

It's gettin' hot in here! #Dominguez

Orel said...

I miss Guerrier.

Dusty Baker said...

Ethier 0 for 4 but seems like -4 for 189.

Cliff Beefpile said...

AJEllis!

Orel said...

I like how Vin has no problem interrupting himself when he's telling a story and something exciting happens.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Holy cats! I hope this continues on the road.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm going to need a cigarette after this game.

Steve Sax said...

AJ Ellis looks like he's finding his groove, as well. Double makes it 5-0 LA

Orel said...

RIP Jim Kelly

Steve Sax said...

Too bad the Giants are winning. If they lose and we can hold on to win, we are tied for fourth place

Orel said...

Wasn't there some stat earlier about how Ajellis hits much better during day games?

Steve Sax said...

6-0! Van Slyke RBI

Dusty Baker said...

MEllis pinch hitting. Means Cuban Jesus is on deck.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Charlie Manuel has kind of a Humpty Dumpty body.

Steve Sax said...

@Orel: I thought you meant the Bills QB

Dusty Baker said...

Jim Kelly bought the farm? Sorry to hear. He had jaw cancer or something like that, no?

#LifeIsFragile

Dusty Baker said...

Ah, so you didn't mean the Bills QB.

You realize more than one personn has a fairly common name, right, Orel?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9417376/jim-kelly-no-cancer-2-weeks-surgery

Orel said...

Whoops, sorry. QB Jim Kelly is still alive. Badass martial artist Jim Kelly has passed.

goodchild27 said...

DeFratus gave up the game last night, and hit Quentin in their previous series against the Padres. I'm starting to like this guy.

BJ Killeen said...

Puig needs a HR for the cycle!

BJ Killeen said...

Someone tell him.

Cliff Beefpile said...

@Dusty

No, it was the martial arts guy. He was in 'Enter the Dragon' with Bruce Lee.

Orel said...

Bill Shaikin ‏@BillShaikin 19s

And there is no joy in Mudville, the mighty Puig strikes out ... wait, and he still gets a standing ovation.

Jason said...

Leaving non-cycle-sigh

Orel said...

This is why you don't trade for relievers.

Fred's Brim said...

that's all right, just keep throwing strikes, kid, finish this off

Orel said...

Nice! 3 of 4 from the Phils.

BJ Killeen said...

Who hoo!

karen said...

This is getting fun!!

Cliff Beefpile said...

4 games back. :)

Jason said...

I'll take it!

Fred's Brim said...

attaboy, Pac!

Great win, great series!

Jason said...

Switched over to the Giants game and it looks like Sandoval gained 20 pounds since last week. Also: fantastic stirrups on the Rockies pitcher.
