Stephen Fife (1-2, 3.74) vs. Jason Marquis (9-2, 3.63)
After splitting with New York before splitting New York, the Dodgers arrive in San Diego for a four-game visit. Four days in San Diego? And it's not even Comic-Con?!
Now would be a pretty good time for the Dodgers to, oh I don't know, win some games in the division they're trying to win. It's starting to get sad. Even a sweep won't get us out of last place.
Last time against Marquis didn't go so well, as he proved to be Puig's only real threat to date. I'm betting Brute 66 is ready for round two, though, having had more time to absorb Earth's yellow sun.
The only real drama (if we still care) is the Carlos Quentin retribution saga, but even that will have to wait:
Carlos Quentin not in #Padres lineup for sixth straight game, per @MartyCaswell. He's got a sore left shoulder. Greinke starts Sat. #Dodgers

UPDATE 7.07p (Sax): This looks like a pretty tough match-up for the Dodgers. Especially when you factor in Fife's -7 walks (which I can only assume means awarding the batter third base).

For an opening game, this is quite a Marquis matchup.
Herrera up, Withrow down
The locked embrace, the stumble round
I say go, she say yes
Dim the lights, you can guess the rest

Mattingly: No tension remains w/ Padres, because modern players get along w/ everybody — save 1 team. “Nobody likes the Red Sox,” he quipped
"...especially after they got Victorino," Maatingly added.
Or Mattingly.
WSH 4, COL 0, B6 (in Washington)
Los Angeles Dodgers:

2. RF: Yasiel Puig
3. 1B: Adrian Gonzalez
4. SS: Hanley Ramirez
5. CF: Andre Ethier
6. 3B: Juan Uribe
7. C: A.J. Ellis
8. 2B: Mark Ellis
9. SP: Stephen Fife
There's also some basketball game going on. I do care who wins, but I'm trying not to make a big deal about it.
I want Quentin to have a sore head to match that sore shoulder.
I'm bummed Mr. F hasn't noticed yet.
I'm pretty oblivious.
Spurs-Heat game is like the last round of a heavyweight boxing match.
Follow the links, Mr. F. (Well, one of them, anyway.)
PUIG HR!
Oh yayyyyyyyy.
Unbelievable. Puig HRs on the first pitch from Marquis. 390 feet. Effortless.
On a plane somewhere over Kansas with shitty wifi trying to watch the game. BTW, Virgin. America sucks the same as every other airline.
Pinche Puig! He is unreal
nice job Gnomes! We're complete on our PGTs!!!
Fife looks a hellavalot like Magoo in that graphic...
@BJ: Gogo internet seemed fine if you want to use streaming audio.
Streaming video? You're hosed.
COSA MÁS GRANDE CABALLERO!
Epale, everyone!
Puig u r 2 sweet
Nice play by A-Gon to snag the second out, a rocket up the line that would have been a double
Fife gets a K for the third out.
1-0 Dodgers through 1
@Sax: watching in fits and spurts but I saw the HR and so good to hear Vin..
of course they are last in the division, Uribe is like the second best player of the team
Urine couldn't clear the wall. He gave it a ride however.
guys, if we lose, it's because they are tired and sleepy
I gave up on video. At least I can listen..
Heard Puig's homerun while i was driving and nearly wrecked. Dumbass red light.
fIBBfe!
Danny Green has lost his mojo.
there is now a third voice in the Padre telecast. Sounds like a hillbilly. I think it's Tony Gwynn.
looks like we gots something cookin'.
Puig up with two on
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What pitch did Puig strike out on?
Vin is on tonite. C'mon Puiggy!
Sorry I'm on a delay :-(
@ Orel
Slider outside
"Then you get both ears and a tail"? What does that mean?
gosh, what a play :(
Thanks, Spank. Guess he and Kemp have the same tendencies.
Yahoo says A-Gon is still on an 0-2 count. Que pasa?
Ali/Frazier down in South Beach...
AGon struck out also on a slider and HanRam did not look good swinging at them. I think they lack patience like young Skywalker.
Well, shucks.
Man, the Heat is/are charmed right now.
Yeah, crazy.
the Lebrons are winning?
By one.
I'm baffled by Tony Gwynn's voice. A black man from L.A. with a voice of a white guy from Kentucky.
He has Tysonitis.
SA 75, MIA 77, 8:34 left.
Deng, ground rule double.
Fife! Four scoreless so far.
And on an efficient 55 pitches.
Patience young padawan
Spurs down 2 with 2:00 to play....
Dammit, Duncan.
Damn.
LeBron > Duncan
Deng.
Well, shit.
Pop is going to be so pissed.
And I turn back to the Dodgers to find them losing 2-1. Of course.
Mellis error, huh?
Seems like LeBron played well. Good for him.
Also, double play to end the inning, please?
Finally Dre
Tie game!
-__-
Figures. Gotta shut down with a 2-2 tie. Traveling bites.
Way to come back with a 1-2-3 frame, Fifer!
OK, the Padres are killing themselves to catch our pop-ups.
I guess the Padres are making their cases for Gold Gloves tonight
Gate-rule double.
Somebody, please put Matt Guerrier on the 1,000,000 day DL
Thanks, Guerrier.
why Guerrier still has a job is beyond me
Guerrier is the Doug Sisk of our generation. Donnie should be ashamed for putting him in meaningful situations
@karina - I thought of you last night at the Dodgers-Yankees game last night when I saw a family wearing Leones hats
@Fred's Brim oh, really? cool! well, my brother is on his honeymoon in New York, he had tickets for Tuesday's game but he couldn't attend yesterday because he was supposed to be in Boston :(
that was awesome
VW Scirocco out at home because of an awesome play by AG
Bad News Dodgers
@karina that stinks he missed the game. Paul from here missed it too
Puig commercial!
@Fred's Brim because they are currently challenged at baseball, know what I mean?
Just rewound. That was Jeteresque by AGon.
throw strikes, stupid!
"Handstand in the grandstand"! Vin is reading beat poetry now.
Damage limited. Which means we'll lose by one.
we are terrible at so many facets of the game
the frustrating thing is that it feels like we are so close to being good. If we could just stop doing the dumb shit we do, we would be so much better.
New motto: no dumb shit
No Dumb Shit. I think that was my prom theme.
But enough about the blog, FB.
First time Vin's oohed and aahed over a baby in a long time.
GEEZ
UNBELIEVABLE
Goddammit, it's like everybody is good at defense except the Dodgers.
how are we so unlucky?
Of course Uribe hits a ball that ends up as an ice cream cone catch.
@Gnomes do you think you will ever drop your curse theory on here? Does it make it real once you say it?
Somehow, MEllis is still to blame for that ball getting through.
you have to be kidding me
goodnight
6-2 Pads. Welp, I'm done.
Remind me again. Which curse theory? The Gibby one? I have so many.
coming back is coming
Of course. Now Puig can't even tie it.
Pfffffffft.
Post-Game Thread, unlike the Dodgers' record, up.
