Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-3, 2.96) vs. Madison Bumgarner (7-4, 3.25).
Big faceoff today between each team's leader in wins. The Dodgers are coming off of a series (and roadtrip) split in San Diego that seemed like a potential momentum shifter for the season, what with Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez mashing, Juan Uribe not totally sucking, Andre Ethier at least doing some servicable fielding, Skip Schumaker not grounding into double plays*, Kenley Jansen saving, and Brandon League making an appearance but not losing the whole frickin' game for us. Could this finally be the type of clicking which we had expected to see sometime in the first 70 games or so? And why the hell might it have taken so long to get here, Don? HUH? But I digress.
The Giants just dropped three of four games to the woeful Miami Marlins in which they were outscored 16-8. Bumgarner had three wins to start off the season, then went 1-4 over his next nine games, before winning his last three games again. Bumgarner leads the team in not only wins but also ERA and Ks (97), and with Matt Cain's volatility and Tim Lincecum's struggles, this game is a critical one for the Giants (the Giants haven't named a starter for tomorrow's game, but we get Lincecum on Wednesday). The Giants have lost six of their last nine and are just a game over .500, after being as many as seven games over breakeven earlier this season.
(*) Oh, and here's a fun stat for you. Despite the 2013 Dodgers' penchant for GIDP, I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that no Dodger players were in the top 10 in the National League: Matt Kemp leads the team with 8, and the recently-released Ramon Hernandez will leave tied for 38th with 6 GIDPs. Meanwhile, the Giants' Pablo Sandoval is third in the NL with 12 GIDPs; SF also has Marco Scutaro tied at 18th (along with Kemp) with 8 GIDPs, and rounding out the top 40 is Hunter Pence (T-29) with 7 and Oyster Pubes (T-38) with 6. Wow, that's a lot of players grounding into double plays on that Giants team!
In fact, the Giants have as many GIDPs as the Dodgers (67, sixth-worst in MLB). Maybe the Giants can sneak ahead of the Dodgers in this category, starting tonight!
And since I'm the king of footnotes, let me add that Game 1 of the College World Series is tonight, UCLA vs. Mississippi State (5p PT). Go Bruins!

No traffic tonight. Gonna get to the ravine way early.
i agree with Orle
UCLA up 1-0 in the top of the first. Crowd is definitely Mississippi State-heavy.
Two outs, Bruins at the corners.
1-0 UCLA through 1.
Orle is Orel in Spanish.
The Killeens are in da yard!
Orale
UCLA had runners in the second and third but hasn't been able to plate a runner yet.
Sort of like the Dodgers!
ORLE?
They're playing the Bruins game on the big screen. Cool. Go UCLA!
@ORELYI I liked that movie too
Bruins get a two-out, two-RBI single (on a 3-2 count!) that results in the final out of the inning (runner tried to stretch for two bases and was caught in a pickle), but still scored two runs.
3-0 UCLA, mid-4
Wow, MLB has a pretty thin slate of games today. Four games, only two relevant to the NL West (this, and PHI@SD).
AC checks in this evening from the Stadium.
At least he won't be beating us tonight.
Andrew Baggarly @CSNBaggs 1h
Angel Pagan will have surgery to repair his torn hamstring, Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced. Out 12 weeks
Pagan claimed that despite the surgery, his hair would come back "flowier and dreamier than ever."
James Loney homered tonight.
Ha! Nice, FB.
Bruins were in a bases-loaded jam. Forced in a run on a walk, then got the next batter to fly to right field.
3-1 UCLA through 4 innings.
Loney is batting over .300, right?
He's still no A-Gon.
Gotta run, boys and girls. Get us a win!
Blue Jays' streak is over, 4-1 TB
Loney: .304/.360/.475
At home, Vinny!
UJTD!
Josh Suchon @Josh_Suchon 7m
Kemp doubles to right. Great swing. Vintage Kemp. Worked on that a lot in early BP today.
Giants retake lead on GIDP
It would be nice to grab an early lead.
Grizzly Bumgarner
PUIG IS BACK
Puig!!!
PUIG!
Pitch was away, but not down.
King of the Solos.
Grizzly Pence
Puigster was awesome!
Was going to say how nice it was to have a lead for once. No need now.
Kobe Arias is hurt.
Dammit. I'm not watching, but Ryu doesn't sound very sharp
Pence looks and probably smells like a homeless man.
Bruins score!
(Boston)
My stats may be off, but I think when the Dodgers score first, we're something like 2-1.
Have I mentioned before how much I HATE Brandon Belt?
I like that Karen always brings her hate game for the giants.
Fuck these idiots are getting lucky again.
Fuck the giants!
Mississippi is the worst state in the union, right?
Next time I'll be rooting for your head to be mounted on the bear's cave wall.
Wow, I thought the Bruins had it all wrapped up. The Blackhawks scored twice in 17 seconds to win it.
Get some runners on for Puig!
Mellis hits one to the track. Show him how it's done, Yasiel!
Lined out to center.
Hey, ah, guys? Another hit might be nice.
FUCK THE GNATS!
Did Posey just see a giant piece of cake? Trips rounding third.
UJTD! Ryu playing a dangerous game tonight.
Nice plays tonight. Need some hits now!
Wow it is like we are playing ourselves. If we had crappy uniforms and played for a scummy city.
UCLA wins! Pitching and defense...I wonder if that formula would work in the major leagues?
OK Puig, unbreak my heart.
Puig's version of a seeing-eye single.
Giants get four outs.
Oh Puig, not close enough.
Fuck the Gnats!
hateHateHATE!!!
Checking in from Boston, Vinny!
Ryu with drunk man windup.
Did he hit his head? Couldn't see from here
Hit the wall slightly which misaligned his line on the ball. Ball hit just above the board.
I just had flashbacks of playing the outfield for the SOSG softball team.
Why is Belisario still on this team?
Holy smokes, Beli got a K!
You're our Puig, Cliffy!
Looks like we are in one of those we can only score on solo homerun stretches.
Nice to see UCLA with that win. Check out the collision that happened at first base, I think in the third inning. It was pretty gutty...
Come on, Dodgers! 1-1, mid 7
FAILED BUNT
AFB
Uribe keeps on keeping on.
Do something for once Ellis!
Or not.
We can't get lucky enough for Belli not to fuck up again.
Sandoval looks like he ate two Uribes.
Guess Donnie doesn't want to ride the Beli wave for that long. A wipeout is imminent.
Wash yer hair, Crawford!
Bottom of the eighth, still 1-1
I smell walk-off?
Leadoff double by Punto!
Punto with a lead off double!
Too bad we're going to strand him.
No bunts.
Where has Punto been lately? Did he get hurt too? I can't keep track...
Ok bunt.
E-1
The bunt works! And Dagwood airmails the throw to first!
Nice throw, Bumgarner.
Too bad we are going to strand them both
In comes Kontos. We should pinch-hit Kershaw.
Puig finish them!
Pweeeeeeg!
Only one RBI, Puig?
Andrew Baggarly @CSNBaggs 2m
Hi George Kontos. Welcome back from Fresno. Here's a tie game, runners at the corners and Yasiel Puig.
FUCK THE GNATS!
Annyong!
Fuck the giants.
Yo.
They're playing that clip from "Back to the Future."
Annyong!
Come on Hanster.
Puig got lucky. Someone teach him to run the bases.
i almost had a heart attack.
cc:my huge carne asada burrito
Jansen time.
Ah Kenley. Be THE MAN
Bring in League!
(kidding)
Who can teach Puig how to run? Matt Kemp? Dre? A slow blind octogenarian?
Glad we r here to see this!
Coco running from La Migra.
Who IS this team?
The answer is: a slow blind octogenarian!
why is this even a duscussion? i thought Lopes was the baserunning guru?
(laughs)
Man, we are giving the Giants a lot of extra outs.

One more out for a historic 3 game win streak. Pubes on deck.
