In: Ramirez, Choate. Out: Eovaldi, McGough.

Discuss amongst yourselves

UPDATE 12:18a (Sax): ESPN echoes:

The Florida Marlins have traded infielder Hanley Ramirez and pitcher Randy Choate to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and a minor-leaguer, sources told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

I'm just excited to potentially see the end of Uribe. Ramirez' .246 BA is a 56 point improvement over the tub of goo. Ramirez' 2012 .322 OBP and .428 SLG trail his .374 and .499 career numbers, but given Eovaldi was a hard-luck 1-6 this year (4.15 ERA) and 208 career (3.96 ERA), it just may be the boost we need at the corners.

At the other corner tonight, James Loney went 2-for-4 with 1 GIDP. He's sitting at a .252 average, .333 slugging. Sigh.

Amazing night!
Now we pick up Dempster on the cheap and Pence and we are laughing

Now we see if a change of scenery will help or hurt Ramirez at the plate.

Has to help I would hope. His drop off happened the same year they told him to cut his hair and stop wearing jewelry on field.

Let your freak flag fly, Hanley!

Also, normally Ned being Ned this trade would have been Eovaldi for Choate. Just consider Hanley a bonus.

wow
I have not been a fan of Hanley in the past and was about to type something negative, but being positive and hopeful is the best tack to take here. I hope a new environment and new coaching/managing will get him hitting and playing better, up to his abilities

Whoa.

They're gonna try to make him wear #99, aren't they? He can't wear #2 anymore.

Alex Cora said...

Well hopefully urine won't play anymore.

I like this trade! He is hitting .259 in the three hole. With the protection of Kemp, Either and to a lesser extent Rivera he will be a good player for us.

All the sports talk radio is heralding this move, less so for Hanley and more so for the fact that the Dodgers are playing like a major market again. I agree, it's a great signal for Dodger fans! Now let's hope Hanley gets rejuvenated by being on a contender. Without gaudy animatronic statues in center field.

Fred's Brim said...

where are they saying he will hit? Would they move Matty and Dre down so he can hit third? Or would they put him at 5? and when will he be in the lineup?

Fred's Brim said...

And how many times will Donny ask him to bunt before he starts ignoring signs?

@FB

The attitude is the elephant in the room, too be sure. I'm willing to forgive a lot if he hits like he can, rather than how he has, but we have to face at least the possibility that he might "Andruw Jones".

Just for fun, let's play "parse the Loria quote":

We had to do something. The machine was sputtering. It's too good a baseball team and for some reason it didn't seem to be operating on all cylinders from the beginning of the season.

@jonmorosi: "I'm told Hanley Ramirez is very excited to join the #Dodgers. They are getting a happy player."

Sweet!

Wicks said...

One would think Ramirez would play 3B for now. Cruz is hitting well right now ride him until he falls apart.

I'm as happy as a goose. I have no idea what that means.

Steve Sax said...

Let's hope this goose isn't cooked.

I think this is a good trade.

Also, the "D" on my laptop is sticking.

@PONealFSWest: "According to Ned, Hanley is racing to get to St. Louis and should arrive by 4 or 5pmCT, up to Donny if he's in lineup."

Orel said...

The more I think about this, the more I love this deal. Love Ellis-Kemp-Ethier-Hanley (or some such combo) batting 2-3-4-5. Add Puig next year and some solid pieces are falling into place.

@latimesbaseball: "Hanley Ramirez likely to bat in middle of #Dodgers order; Kemp will stay in No. 3 slot, Mattingly says"

Franklin Stubbs said...

The 5-spot makes sense.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Righty-lefty-righty, I guess.

MR.F said...

Makes sense, plus I wouldn't bat Hanley ahead of Kemp or Ethier.

MR.F said...

What was Hanley's shoulder injury in 2010(?)?

Franklin Stubbs said...

Per the baseball cube "2011-08-10 - Disabled (Sprained left shoulder)"

Hideo Nomo said...

Should make for an interesting episode of The Franchise.

MR.F said...

What position will Hanley play? Continue at 3B?

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Ned actually pulls off a great trade for once! Well done.

Manley will definitely help out our lineup.

Kennedy going on the DL also helps out big time.

Choate.

Now just go get a 1B or LF.

I have the suspicion Kasten was behind this one.
