Game 97 Thread: July 23 @ Cards, 5p

Chad Billingsley (4-9, 4.30) vs. Joe Kelly (1-2, 2.75).

Bills returns from a stint on the DL in an attempt to extend the Dodgers' winning streak to five, while the rookie Kelly pitches his eighth start for the Fredbirds. It's hot and muggy in St. Louis (100°F with 33% humidity), so let's hope these guys don't decide to go another twelve innings today.

Wait, so 33% humidity is muggy now?

Orel said...

Isn't it? I just assumed Midwest summers = super-humid.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Well, it's 60% humidity in LA right now (though it is true that hotter air has a higher moisture-carrying capacity)

*gives self a swirly for being pedantic*

Orel said...

Toilet humidity: 100%.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Even at 60% relative humidity, I still evaporate nicely!

Orel said...

Yanks get Ichiro? Holy shit.

Franklin Stubbs said...

wut?

Franklin Stubbs said...

That's...remarkable.

MR.F said...

What's the source? I need to add that person to my Twitter feed!

Franklin Stubbs said...

I got it from MLBTR (who got it from YES)

Franklin Stubbs said...

Source

MR.F said...

Thanks. I will follow MLB Trade Rumors. Maybe not YES.

Franklin Stubbs said...

That there's some good twittersense, Mr. F.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

You still haven't followed me yet, Mr. F.

Franklin Stubbs said...

That there's some good twittersense, Mr. F.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

You know what, Stubbs?

You're probably right.

MR.F said...

My twittersense is tingling!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Waitaminute, today's game is at 5:15!

Franklin Stubbs said...

BUT WE'LL BE READY AT 4, GAHDAMIT!

Orel said...

Whoops, time corrected at post moved to the top of the main page.

Steve Sax said...

I'm still waiting for this goddamn first pitch

Franklin Stubbs said...

I blame the entire Central Time Zone.

Jason said...

I blame the entire Central Zone cricket team.

Orel said...

Here we go!

Orel said...

I wonder if the Mariners will make Felix Hernandez available.

Orel said...

Abreu walks on seven pitches.

Orel said...

TV broadcast says 101 degrees with 45% humidity.

Steve Sax said...

Abreu LF
Mellis 2B
Kemp CF
Ethier RF
Rivera 1B
Kennedy 3B
Cruz SS
AJellis C
Bills P

Orel said...

Mellis hits into the 1-6-3 DP

Steve Sax said...

Why is Abreu in leadoff? I mean, the BB was nice, but him getting nailed in a DP is predestined

MR.F said...

I blame the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona.

Steve Sax said...

who is injured? GameDay says "injury delay"

hopefully it's just a MLB.com intern

Orel said...

Ball don't lie.

Orel said...

Kelly reached for the DP ball and it went off his finger.

Steve Sax said...

This is the Joe Kelly of which I have heard.

Steve Sax said...

Kemp grounds to Fookie for out 3. Three up, three down (thanks to a GIDP) in the first.

Orel said...

Jay doubles. Typical first inning for Bills.

Steve Sax said...

Jeez, I blink and there's a man on second with one out. What's up, Bills?

Orel said...

Walks Holliday on four pitches.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Berkman is 73 years old, for fuck's sake!

Franklin Stubbs said...

I hate that Kennedy is not the worst option we have.

spank said...

Ichimutt

Orel said...

Thanks, Fookie! AK's bloop pops out of his glove for a single. But Ethier can't advance.

Orel said...

OH YEAH

Cliff Beefpile said...

CRUUUUUUZ!

Franklin Stubbs said...

CRUZ!

Hideo Nomo said...

CRUZN ON A MONDAY AFTERNOON.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Yet again, Holliday's embarrassed in left field by the Dodgers.

Hideo Nomo said...

LOLLIDAY

Hideo Nomo said...

The moth thing wasn't against us, was it?

MR.F said...

Whoa, 3-run home run!

Hideo Nomo said...

Oh yeah, it was. Nevermind.

Steve Sax said...

hey, it's 3-1 good guys!

MR.F said...

Can someone humorously describe LOLLiday's latest gaffe for those who didn't see it?

Hideo Nomo said...

Holliday chased Cruz's homer to the wall, turned his back to th wall sadly when he realized the ball was out, then the ball bounced back in and bonked him on the head.

Steve Sax said...

Bills needs 10 pitches to take out the merc with a mouth

Steve Sax said...

@Gnomes: I cannot WAIT to see that highlight

MR.F said...

Thanks Nomo! lulz

MR.F said...

Someone is Deadpool?

Hideo Nomo said...

The highlight is up.

Steve Sax said...

42 pitches for Bills through 2 innings; 47 for Joe Kelly

Steve Sax said...

That highlight is hilarious, especially at the end when Lyons says "...and then hits Holliday...right on the noggin".

Lyons should go out and pants Holliday just for kicks

Steve Sax said...

@Mr. F: Joe Kelly wrote Deadpool back in the late 90s

Steve Sax said...

Bills escapes the third inning.

54 pitches for Bills through 3; 55 pitches for Kelly

3-1 Dodgers

Fred's Brim said...

no No GODAMMIT NO!
Ned, please don't trade Lee for Garza

Orel said...

When will Bills go 1-2-3? It won't be this inning.

Orel said...

Why, FB? Because you don't like Garza or you like Lee? Would you trade Lee for Chase Headley?

Steve Sax said...

Leadoff single for Molina, bottom of the fourth (3-1 LA)

Franklin Stubbs said...

If we weren't going to give up Lee for I don't know why he'd be in the deal for Garza.

Fred's Brim said...

Garza and Headley are fine but I don't know how much they would help us.
As I submit this, Bills will give up a 2-R homer

Steve Sax said...

Force out at second, so now Skipster's on first with one out

Fred's Brim said...

I guess I would rather have Lee in the future than not win with Garza and/or Headley for a few months

Steve Sax said...

Carpenter GIDP! 3-1 through 4

spank said...

We'sus winning again?

Steve Sax said...

AJ Ellis' OBP has steadily degraded from .462 on May 17 to only .394 today. His nadir OBP since mid-April has been .391

Fred's Brim said...

oof please no more losing runners on the basepaths anymore

Fred's Brim said...

at least MEllis will lead off and not Matty

Steve Sax said...

The human head weighs eight pounds

Steve Sax said...

I'm guessing Abreu was out by about 2 miles there

Cliff Beefpile said...

Fuck those Shane Victorino rumors, by the way. It was bad enough with Jeff Kent, I don't wanna have to hate someone wearing Dodger blue, again.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Phew! No HR for Kelly. That was close.

Orel said...

I believe both Garza and Headley would be under club control for at least 2013, but need confirmation on this.

Fred's Brim said...

Does Chad give up the most hits and walks to opposing pitchers in the league?

Steve Sax said...

oh shit, who got injured now?

Orel said...

Now they're having a Star Trek Night at Dodger Stadium.

Orel said...

Kelly took a tumble at first. Rough night for him.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Garza is under club control through 2013, Headley through 14, per baseball reference.

Steve Sax said...

what's with the bills facial hair, too? just looked on dodgers.com and he looks weird

Orel said...

"A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration."

"A player with six or more years of Major League service who has not executed a contract for the next season is eligible to become a free agent."

Garza: 4.149 years
Headley 3.123 years

Steve Sax said...

@orel 6:53p: what's next, a Dodger Stadium LOTR night? Matrix? Spaceballs? Galaxy Quest? Garza Quest?

Orel said...

Bills has some beard growth.

Steve Sax said...

J K, Rowling!

(John Jay strikes out)

Cliff Beefpile said...

Get back to writing the Federalist Papers, John Jay!

Cliff Beefpile said...

I'm still waiting for someone to have a 'Howard the Duck' night.

Orel said...

Consecutive hits by Kemp & Ethier! When's the last time that happened?

Orel said...

AWO

Fred's Brim said...

yuck
that sucked

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm starting to loathe Juan Rivera.

Fred's Brim said...

it is never easy with Chad

Fred's Brim said...

I am griping about him even though he's given up only one run through 6

Orel said...

Kelly out, Salas in.

Fred's Brim said...

I wonder if he be hit for this inning. He's at 100 pitches

Orel said...

Cruz gave it a ride, kind of. Wonder if he could displace Dee?

Steve Sax said...

So Jay is gone for the seventh

Orel said...

TGJ on deck for Bills.

Orel said...

Ajellis single!

Hideo Nomo said...

Playing matchups against TGj? Oh my.

Fred's Brim said...

Liz into the game for Salas

Steve Sax said...

AJ Ellis one-out single in the seventh!

We knock out Salas!

WHOO HOO!!!

Steve Sax said...

(Except, Bills is also out for Gwynn PH)

Steve Sax said...

Salas disaster

Steve Sax said...

(wait a second, scratch that. That was a SALAD disaster. my bad)

Fred's Brim said...

Tony with a single. How will we waste this?

Steve Sax said...

Gwynn first pitch single

first and second, one out, T7

Steve Sax said...

Abreu already has two walks. Can he make it three?

Steve Sax said...

i don't think this will end well

Fred's Brim said...

fudge
cmon, Mehllis

Steve Sax said...

Abreu K

Yet another pitching change

Steve Sax said...

SF up 1-0 on SD, bottom 1

Orel said...

Marquellis 2-RBI double!

Fred's Brim said...

Marrrrrrkus!

Steve Sax said...

Mellis scores TWO!

Kemp Ks on three.

Steve Sax said...

Kempy now 1-for-4 with a K and 1 LOB

Steve Sax said...

5-1 Dodgers at the stretch

Gotta go, kiddies

Fred's Brim said...

how will our bullpen be tonight?

Orel said...

Broken bat liner to Anderson Cooper. I mean Mark Ellis.

Orel said...

So far, so good. 1-2-3 for Wright.

Orel said...

"A Snooki, a Wookiee and a Rookie -- but no Mookie. It was 'Star Wars' night at Citi Field, featuring dressed-up characters. Mets fan Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi from 'Jersey Shore' also was on hand -- she got booed -- as was Mets rookie pitcher Matt Harvey, who will make his big league debut Thursday night at Arizona. Alas, Mets ambassador Mookie Wilson was not seen."

Orel said...

Why do the Giants have such an easy schedule?

Orel said...

Mattingly prudently pulls Wright, but Beltran knocks a two-run HR off Beli. 5-3 Dodgers, one run, bot 8.

Fred's Brim said...

Belli has been way off lately. I wonder if he's hurt

Orel said...

Nice recovery, Beli. Three more defensive outs and everyone gets to take a shower.

Fred's Brim said...

or just the averages catching up to him

Orel said...

Coke withdrawal?

Fred's Brim said...

Kenley time?

Orel said...

Loney defense!

Franklin Stubbs said...

Nice snag!

Franklin Stubbs said...

Uno mas.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Winning…streak?

Fred's Brim said...

woop!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Five in a row! Look out, world!
