- First they tried to appropriate Jackie Robinson's legacy. Now the Mets are trying to bogart Frank McCourt's financial issues! Could Mets saga offer hint of Dodgers' future? (Steve Dilbeck, Dodgers Blog)
- Speaking of which, thanks to Mets Grrl for dropping by to comment on the Robinson thing. Her take:
If you've only noticed it the last few years, you haven't been paying attention. And be careful when you say "The Mets" because it's "The Wilpons" who have the fixation with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Their party line is "Jackie Robinson played for the National League in New York, and we are the National League team in New York, so we honor his legacy" - which of course is bullshit. The Jackie Robinson Rotunda was in place for Citi Field Opening Day, long before the Mets Hall of Fame or the championship banners or a whole host of other things, the first thing you saw when you got to the top of the escalators after coming through the rotunda was the "Ebbetts Club" (now renamed the Champions Club).
But this is all Fred Wilpon. All of it.
I think they host Rachel Robinson for reasons of proximity - she is a woman of advancing years - but I don't think you can get on someone for commemorating the day with pomp and circumstance. You really can't. You can, however, excoriate Fred Wilpon on the rest of it.
What, fans of other teams get annoyed with their owners?

I actually kind of liked New Dodgertown and wish they hadn't switched back to Dodgertown Classic so quickly.
it tasted too much like Pepsi
Can we have baseball yet?
@Mr. C: One more football, then just a week until baseball.
MLBTR just recapped the baseball deals of last February, reminding me that we signed Brian Giles and Eric Gagne. I could have sworn that was a fever dream I had.
@Josh
Foot...ball?
@Mr C 8:32 am I thought the same thing last night and I've only been without baseball ONE night. My recommendation would be Serie del Caribe. two baseball games per 6 days in a row, the perfect transition for Spring Training :)
@karina
Great minds think alike.
You know I'll be keeping an eye out for a baseball fix!
When does Badminton season start?
Do you long for some shuttlecock, Spank?
Badminton never takes a day off!

*blushes*
Pirating the thread a moment, this is important.
We have a developing issue we must put an end to.

This must be stopped.
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but, I don’t recall seeing any such thing yet.
Josh.did you see what you've done? you made Spank to blush!
Mr. C, just wanted to give some suggestions to the baseball-crazed crowd ;).Besides, I'll be watching and it'll be fun to discuss it around.
@Pistol Pete can't read the links, can you shorten them, please?
Even better, since I screwed up the link anchors, just google
"giants banner dodgers stadium"
that alone should do the trick.
Fuck that shit and FUCK THE GNATS!
I've seen that story, and I've been trying to decide what the appropriate response would be. Or rather, since I don't have a surface-to-air missile battery at my disposal, what the next most appropriate response would be.
@Mr C hire some gangs to wait for the pilot on land?
This confirms my theory Jints fans are not very bright or proud: who on Earth will celebrate the championship of their team putting the name of the opponent on the air too?
Sincerely, these people, unlike most of us, are fans of the rivalry, not even their own team!
they have just reached 58% of the goal :(
Can we pay them NOT to fly it?
I think I can get my hands on a few SAMs.
Alternately, I like the idea of hiring some MS-13 fellas to rain down holy hell on the pilot before s/he is able even to take off.
At the very least, we should get them to fly it upside-down.
Settle it old-school. Just beat their lame-asses on the field after they've wasted their 8 large.
The general sentiment I've read is very negative towards these losers for revealing their enormous (justified) feelings of inadequacy.
If Dodgers brass act appropriately, this may not happen for public safety/relations purposes - frankly, some drunk Dodgers fans might take serious exception to anyone wearing orange in the park that day - this action would only serve to exacerbate that.
I'll settle it new school with a fly by shooting.
Several people have mentioned the banner thing to us. I don't want to give them more publicity by posting about it, but maybe other Sons will feel differently.
@Sax/Orel
It does accomplish exactly the goal that those chumps intend.
I'd rather talk about Charlton Athletic being just a single point out of the promotion playoff, frankly.
Yeah, I've calmed down a bunch after swallowing some vomit earlier.
Let them gloat and waste their money and look like fools while our guys get pissed and paste them for a respectable 6-2 victory en route to a sweep.
I still hate those guys, though.
"some drunk Dodgers fans might take serious exception to anyone wearing orange in the park that day"
I resemble that remark, Pete. That's exactly what I would do.
...but people like you and I would do that anyway, Dusty.
I take exception to them wearing orange in their "park", let alone My Blue Heaven. Still haven't encountered one I can respect. I suppose it's possible one might exist. Maybe. Nah.
That banner thing will be so lame, to the point of being laughable. The plane will fly way too high and the banner will be too small to read, like some cheesy Spring Break plane coaxing me to go to Senor Frogs after I get my sunburn on. It'll cause a stir in the first inning and people will completely forget about it after that
I bet somehow, the spelling will get screwed up, and they'll have a banner reading "BETA AL."
BELT AA!
There's a joke in there about no one being at the park on time to actually see the banner.
I find it oddly appropriate that they are only flying ONE banner.
5 > 1
Driving from san diego to l.a., how do I avoid freeway traffic and get to game on time.
They probably won't have enough funds and have to split the banner with some other goober.
So it will say "Beat LA! I Love you Jane will you marry me?"
But they might get their punctuation marks mixed up so it will say "Beat LA? I love you Jane will you marry me!"
EAT LAB!
It's better than poodle.
Or, a banner more relevant to us:
ALE TAB!
Just for fun, I should start a beet farm, name it Beet LA and then start threatening lawsuits.
@ FV re: traffic
You can take the I-15 to the I-10 then head west to L.A. I don't know the traffic situation on that route but it should be better than the I-5. Anything is better than that B.S. Look into it.
I prefer commuting by zeppelin, but that will work, too.
Thanks Spank, will try. Though a zeppelin would be cool, woo hoo a zeppelin.
