Multiple reports suggested that the Rangers and Adrian Beltre were close to an agreement on a multiyear deal yesterday, but it turns out that "nothing is remotely imminent" between the team and the third baseman. Though MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reported that the sides aren't nearing a deal, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says there "appears to be some hope" about a potential agreement.
If it does go down like this, I'll be happy it's not the Angels, at least.

Incidentally, Scott Boras' office is literally a stone's throw away from mine, I should go down there and steal some of his 10% of Beltra's contract.

MSTI has a point; Beltre tends to shine in contract years much more brightly than in other years. But the fact remains, WE HAVE NO BATS in our lineup next year. And there ain't anyone else out there who can give us some pop. Is Beltre worth $96M? No. But then Pierre wasn't worth $45M, and Andruw wasn't worth $36M, so who the hell knows anyway.
I am not looking forward to coming to the ballpark next year, seeing the other team take a 2-0 lead in the third inning, and knowing we can't come back to win.
@SS - as I had mentioned elsewhere (maybe Chad or MSTI), the real fear for the Dodgers lineup is if Kemp & Ethier have off years agao, but if that's going to happen, we might as well all go home now because no addition will make any difference.
That said, once again, Ned Colletti has shown himself to be a colossal jackass and addressing not the team's deficiencies (the pitching was roughly alright last year). Now, I know it takes two for a trade to work but some of the deals handed out by Colletti has just been asinine.
I wouldn't say we have NO bats. Dre and Matt are potent threats if they have at least moderately better seasons than last year. I even (perhaps foolishly) expect better offensive production from Blake and Loney this year. Sure, everybody took a big old stinky dump last year, but it can't happen to every single guy two years in a row, can it?

@Josh - I think, even as a fan of Loney, what you see if what you get with the guy. It's a testament to how far he's fallen in my view that if his career arc mirrors that of Mark Grace, I'll consider a success.

My biggest current worries are the lack of a righty left fielder and a non-Kuo lefty reliever.
My biggest ongoing worries are Mattingly and potential injuries.
Otherwise, I think we're in decent enough shape to compete.

I agree with the concern of lack of lefty. On Mattingly, I think he'll be fine. If the product on the field performs to expectations, he'll be hailed a breathe of fresh air. If the product on the field under-performs, the pitchforks will be out. The common denominator? Mattingly will act the same way in either scenario.
