Go Crenshaw!

I'm not normally a follower of high school football, but as soon as I heard about this matchup, I knew who I was rooting for. From "CIF Bowl Open Division preview: No. 16 nationally Crenshaw versus De La Salle" at MaxPreps:

This is a dream matchup really. Old school versus the newcomer. Private school versus public. Ultimate suburb versus inner city.

De La Salle and all its tradition and reputation, a six-time mythical national champion and the only school to be selected to a State Bowl game all four years – no one else has been picked more than twice – against a Los Angeles City team far more known for its basketball prowess.

There's a load of Division I talent on both squads.

They truly saved the best for last - the final game in the country to be played in 2009.

Crenshaw is the first Los Angeles City school to be picked into the bowl game and after a 34-14 victory over Narbonne the team was overcome with emotion. The season has been that satisfying for the Cougars (14-0).

Yes, Crenshaw is the alma mater of Darryl Strawberry. Want another Dodger connection? Snoop Dogg: Dodger fan, Crenshaw benefactor.

The game is tomorrow, Saturday, at 8 p.m. at the Home Depot Center in Carson. It will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet California and Comcast SportsNet Plus, webcast at KBCsports.com and on the radio at KFRC 1550. Go Cougars!

*sigh*
my high school didn't even have a football team and I don't think we've had anybody play any sports higher than D3 or community college

Fred's Brim said...

More importantly, will there be a Bring-It-On-style cheerleader battle at halftime?

Had the mighty Argos of Garden Grove High School beaten La Mirada last week in the Southern Division final, they would've matched Crenshaw's unblemished record.
It would've likely surpassed Crenshaw's emotional factor having lost team captain, Senior, Kevin Telles to a heart attack at the end of the very first game of the season vs. Westminster.

With that, Go Cougs. I've always hated that De La Salle cockiness.

Not sure if any of you have heard, but starting Monday the universe will collapse upon itself. ESPN is launching the new website espnLosAngeles.com. Your #1 resource for info on Derek Jeter's awesomeness and its effect on sports in LA.

I went to Birmingham HS, and we were supposed to go to State but Coronal centenial made it over us. And it was truly sad, the BHS defeated Poly and ND when they were playing at their best. Like 4 people have gone to Big colleges. But since that time i dont belive on the CIF. Its bullshit.

Definitely pulling for the kids of the CPT.

Thx for heads up on the new website. That way. we can get late-breaking Jeter news and not have to watch some tape-delayed broadcast. I'm sick of the East Coast news cycle driving all the Jeter news. Overall, this will provide an excellent foothold for ESPN to perpetuate the East Coast Bias, right here under our noses.

Finally got around to photographing our Dodgers tree. Check it out:

Looks sweet. But invest in some wrapping paper. I think I know what you're getting for christmas.

Coal. I'm expecting lots and lots of coal.

@Dusty Baker i also own that Duke Elllington/Marry Poppins Soundtrack on vinyl. What are the odds?

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina

That's hilarious. Mrs. Dusty said "What if people see what we have on our wall...blah blah blah" and I was like "Uh, I'm kind of proud of having that particular album on vinyl, so who cares?"

It's been over 3 days since a SoSG post. I'm going through withdrawal here.

It's the holidays! They've all gone home to dad.

(Although I like to picture Garvey in a magical sleigh visiting all of his children around the world in one night.)

Mr. Customer said...

I hereby decree that there shall be one or more Steve Garvey themed Christmas carols before the week is out.

That is all.

Dusty Baker said...

The Garvey family Xmas must really be hard to plan for and subsidize.

Dusty Baker said...

Oh, and I agree w Mr. C

Jingle bells, jingle bells, greetings from the Sons
Oh what fun it is to post about our favorite Bums

[Getting warmed up]

We wish you a World Series;
We wish you a World Series;
We wish you a World Series and a Kershaw Cy Young.
Good tidings we bring to Joe and to Vin;
Good tidings for Playoffs and a Kemp MVP.

Oh, bring us a World Series;
Oh, bring us a World Series;
Oh, bring us a World Series and another staff ace
We won't go until we win one;
We won't go until we win one;
We won't go until we win one, so bring us a staff ace

I guess the Sons were absolutely plowed after the Christmas party.

News Flash: Lionel Messi wins World Footballer of the Year.
Says he's thankful that Jeter plays baseball.

Mr. Customer said...

@rbnlaw

Derek Jeter was robbed.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

What if Messi is Derek Jeter?

Mr. Customer said...

My contribution isn't Steve Garvey themed, but nonetheless...

I'll have a blue Christmas, can you blame me?
Our Dodger blue has only signed Jamey.
Since the Mariners swapped with the Phils for Cliff Lee,
Even the Nats found some scratch to pay Marquis.
Our Dodger blue owner's still flaky.
Our Dodger blue rotation seems shaky.
Centerfield, First, and Right,
We're doing alright,
But still it's a blue, blue Christmas.

I'll have a blue Christmas, Frank and Jamie.
Your Dodger blue indiscretions still pain me.
Centerfield, First, and Right,
(Thank God for Logan White!)
But for now it's still a blue, blue Christmas.

Dusty Baker said...

Messi is a Hobbit!

He badmouthed the Premiership today, the little shitweasel. I can't wait for John Terry to bash his shin in when he gets a chance next.

Dusty Baker said...

Mr. C-

Nice! And timely, too, to already include the Marquis to Nats reference. Good signing for Nats, I think.

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Frank McCourt is gutting My Town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's got a jacked price
Frank McCourt is gutting My Town
He hears you when you're bitching
He knows he will not break
from taking players cheap, not rich,
So just accept the new headache!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Frank McCourt is gutting My Town
Frank McCourt is gutting My Town

Mr. Customer said...

"Just accept the new headache" made me laugh so hard I cried a little.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I'm glad I could bring joy to someone, Mr. C.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Quick! Someone get Delino! I just heard on TBLA that we signed Russ Ortiz!

Mr. Customer said...

@MLASF

Damnation. Now I cried so hard I laughed a little.

I hope that it's all a horrible, tasteless hoax.

I'm going to bed to pretend I never read that.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm putting together a "Christmas in Hollis" parody now that you guys have me going...

Fred's Brim said...

DB, here's a comp with that has some awesome old school (nearly lost to history) christmas rap cuts (and some other things). My Christmas Bells is a good take on LL Cool J's Rock The Bells

rbnlaw said...

Really, things could be worse. We could all be Angel fans.
Their GM has done nothing, they're losing players on the market left and right, and they've signed no one.
All that, and their owner is still happily married. Beer prices are still lower than at Dodger Stadium, though.

Mr. Customer said...

@rbnlaw

Being an Angels fan is a crime that carries it's own punishment.
