So we talked about the World Cup-inspired format. Now, regarding the actual rules, instead of a competition based on speed or volume of comments, this time we're going with something a little different (translation: I need a break from tracking the source and/or timing of hundreds of comments). So here are the rules for Round 2's competition, beginning today at noon in this very post (thanks to Orel for helping with the concept):
- For each of the next 3 days, including today, a post will appear titled "Flo vs Deltalina: Round 2-X Begins!" Today, that post is this one. For tomorrow and Wednesday, the post will appear at 9am PT.
- In the thread it will review the pairings for that sub-Round. Today is 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4.
- Your are welcome to comment as you wish in the thread, but only your first 2 comments on or after 12noon PT will matter. Plus, you must comment by
4pm3pm PT or you lose the round (unless your opponent is also MIA). - Whenever you make a comment, there is a url associated with it. You can see this url by clicking on the individual post and scrolling over the timestamp of the comment. It is in the format http://www.sonsofstevegarvey.com/2009/12/off-season-reading.html?showComment=1260052730521#c7896033777979927329.
- For this competition, the last digit in the sequence of numbers is what counts (in the above example, the number "9"). Add up the last digit of the url of each of your first 2 comments made on or after 12noon PT, and that is your score for that sub-Round.
- Remember, in a given sub-Round, you are only competing against one other participant. Compare your score with that of your opponent to determine win, lose, or tie, as per the World Cup Group Play structure explained earlier today.
- So, as you can see, neither speed nor accuracy is an issue.
- At the end of the 3 sub-Rounds, the top two participants in each Group will advance.
Got it? So here again are the groups:
GROUP A | score | GROUP C | score |
1. Fred's Brim | 2+3= 5 | 1. djansson | 9+2= 11 |
2. TD | 4+5= 9 | 2. Mr Customer | 0+8= 8 |
3. Jason | 5+8= 13 | 3. Wicks | 8+6= 14 |
4. Matt | 2+2= 4 | 4. J Steve | 7+6= 13 |
  |   |   |   |
GROUP B | score | GROUP D | score |
1. Keven C | 4+3= 7 | 1. Scott | n/a |
2. Dusty Baker | 8+3= 11 | 2. fanerman | 9+4= 13 |
3. Steve Dittmore | 3+6= 9 | 3. rbnlaw | 6+8= 14 |
4. Greg | 0+9= 9 | 4. Bryan | 8+4= 12 |
And here again is the schedule of play:
- sub-Round 2-A (today): 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4
- sub-Round 2-B (tomorrow): 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4
- sub-Round 2-C (Wednesday): 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3
Again, this is sub-Round 2-A, so within each group it's 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4. Wait 'til noon and comment below wisely!

*Insert obligatory "Isn't this how the BCS works?" joke here*
Is there a cutoff time? How long will you wait for stragglers?
(Why am I asking? I can't even play.)
Good question - cutoff is, say 4pm PT. I need time to tabulate the results.
Will add to the rules.
Actually, I'm moving deadline to 3pm. I'm on east coast. A 3 hour window should be plenty especially if you know when those 3 hours will occur each day.
Hopefully the rules include the inability to delete a comment in favor of getting in a comment with a better URL #! Room for chicanery here...
Good point Dusty...
I forget... beyond bragging rights and the opportunity to be the 5th starter next year, what are we competing for?
Damn... wasted an 8 on the practice post.
*hits some practice drives on the range*
Self control is not one of my strong suits.
Fire one!
If I get another zero, I'm going to want a booth review.
Fire two!
*shoots into dark*
Big money, big money, no whammies... Stop!
it appears I shot a deuce...
let's wipe up and get this over with
can we go back to killing people?
Here's hoping for another high number...
Double up!
haha of course I hit a 9 after ive spent my bullets
Switching to Beast Mode...
Hopefully 8 will get it done.
Scores updated. Please verify accuracy.
I got a 3 first time... that would win most World Cup matches, so I'm good, right?
I'm not sure how to strategize about this, but here goes nothing!
Sonovabitch!
A 9 on the first try! Sweet! I'm a natural.
Group C fully accounted for. I'm hoping for a 4 for Wicks' 2nd...
And then a 2. Crap. Beginner's luck. I hope a total of 11 will be enough to carry me.
@djansson
Sorry, that's an interjection, not an accusation.
Wicks goes for the win in extra time!!!!
*Bicycle kick*
Goal!!!!
This is my comment.
And Group C is done. Second highest score in the group and I lost.
Mr C: At least one of us will have points after tomorrow!
A 2?! I feel like this just happened to me:

Damn it!
FC Wicks was victorious today in a hard faught match vs. J Steve. The Wicks supporters took to the streets in celebration and are looking forward to the second game of the group stage.
My combined score will also serve as the over/under number for # of mistresses who eventually come out saying they hooked up with Tiger.
Gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol!!!!!!!
ouch Matt - you and I are the Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Ricas of this tourney
Has England lost on penalties yet?
That's what I get for pulling flashy moves from bad 1980s movies staring Pele
I better score big. My fans are armed and not afraid to intimidate a referee or his family...
soon enough DB. Italy's about to sail a PK too
So I will use my first of 2 posts to clarify: is the number we get entirely random? Well, I'm sure there's a fancy algorithm that determines how the number is computed, but for the purposes of a contestant, do we just post randomly and hope for the best?
fanerman - as far as I know it's random, but you just scored a 9, so whatever you're doing, do it again.
rbn, don't forget you have to do your 2nd comment...
Here's the shot. . .
Can I sell my second post points?
Was that another 6? It had some other symbol after the number.
Looks like a 12 for me. Respectable, but not overpowering. I'd expect more from me based on my power rankings and such.
Looks like an 8 to me, rbnlaw.
For the 2nd comment, I mean.
I think Zidane was just sent off.
Aw man, if I were playing, I'd have 17!
*shoves hands in pockets and storms off*
Better late than never
I had to paddle into work this morning because of the torrential downpour.
14, eh? Those who had me on their Blogger fantasy team must be pleased.
laf at my 0+9 = 9 for a tie
When should I post?/ Post what??
Late again it would appear.
This is hard to keep up with.
Is it based on total posts??
....or something else??
Or is it magic???
Or based on some type of math, like trigometry?? (sp)
Fantastic. Here's another shot in the dark.
Trig is magic to me, comparatively, given my lack of understand of either.
oof - caught flat-footed on day one of group play. If I don't make it to the knockout stage, I will have to blame it on too much league play prior to the tourney
FB = Sir Alex Ferguson
Centering pass ...
And it's saved by Cech ... Wonderful ... Can the last digit be a 10? I need it.
Cech may wear a helmet that makes him look like a penis, but he's a fine keeper. Blue is the colour!
All this footy talk really gets me worked up.
Wenger is happy with the way I played and feels it will end with a victory. He regrets using Rosicky in this game as well.
Side note. Watching Arsenal/Chelsea last weekend, I noted the announcers annoying habit of calling Tomas Rosicky, Rosinski. As if he were a Pole rather than a lovable Czech.
As usual, I will blame Javier Mascherano for my woeful performance in front of goal in the first leg.
Now that we have a tie in Group C, and, theoretically, all four of us could finish 1-1-1. Does goal differential in pool play serve as a tiebreaker? Or do we go to PKs? Or do we call the replay booth and ask for :01 to be put back on the clock?
Steve-
And how did two Arkansans get drawn in the same group? I thought they would have kept us apart until the knockout stage.
Dusty - not a native Arkansan... born in South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach.
Still, you'd think the Sons would want some geographic diversity in the finals.
Group Play tiebreakers are as follows:
1. score difference
2. total score
3. head-to-head
4. random
EK - "4. Random"
Ah... :)
Anyone going for horse placenta treatments after this round? I'm driving (to the Balkans).
I know Steve...just joshing around. I don't actually claim to be from there and you aren't actually from there...I'm still loyal to them Hogs, though I haven't lived in AR since I lit out when I was 22.
Speaking of joshing, I miss Josh S.
@rbnlaw
*stamps hoof twice for yes*
EK- Can I apply for hardship posts tomorrow? I have to catch a plane to DC at 9:05 AM and therefore can only post up until around 8:35 AM Pacific Time. Unless they have wifi on de plane. Which I'm very much hoping for so I can work...who am I kidding so I can have a few Bloodys and watch tomorrow's comment thread.
hmm, can't figure out any kind of pattern, so here's a random guess
It's all ball bearings these days.
DB, what time does your flight land?
hoping for a big number here...
5 PM Eastern-ish
Will the titular (*snicker*) women come back into play now that it's (mostly) Deltalina vs. Deltalina?
Hey Dusty!
Team Flo may soon be in Atlanta on permanent layover unless we wildcards improve our performance in tomorrow's contests.
this is very confusing. but i like the world cup format
DB, the governing body (me) has agreed to allow your next two comments in this thread count towards tomorrow's score.
If anyone else knows of specific conflicts tomorrow or wednesday please let me know beforehand.
Wait, DB is playing his half of the game in an empty stadium?
Early flights=fan hooliganism.
Randy Wolf signing imminent
http://bit.ly/5swwHz
Thx for that, EK. Here goes:
England '66 !!!!
And another:
Joe Cole for England!
6+2=8
Not so hot...Not awful, but no so hot. I will be like a typical ENG squad: score early then sit back and try to withstand a battering for the next 78 minutes.
New headline for article that MLASF posted:
"Randy Wolf Signing Not Imminent"
Hot Stove, indeed.
DodgerTownUSA (Dodgers official Twitter feed):
"Colletti: Dodgers are leaning towards making Scott Elbert and Josh Lindblom as starting pitchers. McDonald more flexible."
What's that about '66, then?
@ Mr. C:
1966 World Cup
Now Ed Price is saying that the Brewers may have Wolf on a three-year deal.

Dusty - safe travels tomorrow as you sail over the wonderful Hog state. Basketball team drew 6,000 fans tonight for game against Delaware State... going to be a long hoops year here.
Cheers, Steve.
Hard to understand how the basketball program could have taken the step(s) back that it has after the promise of the Pelfrey era.
@dusty
My tounge was firmly in cheek there.
Considering my avi, I have to say something about England's finest 90 minutes that didn't involve shooting down Messerschmits.
Mr. C-
But of course. Not only have I not taken off me specs and given your avatar a closer look, I have yet to master the art of comment thread sarcasm detection.
Catch you all from the East Coast for the next week.
Good luck evading the feds, db.
