Game 84 Thread: June 29 vs. Cardinals, 1p

Clayton Kershaw (8-2, 2.24) vs. Shelby Miller (7-6. 3.75).

Yesterday's 9-1 win, coupled with yesterday's extra-inning loss by the Giants (who have dropped 14 of 18), puts the Dodgers a mere one game out of the division lead. Which is truly remarkable, let's face it. Suddenly, the Dodgers are playing error-free ball even if no one can confirm these lack of errors on television broadcasts; meanwhile, the Giants are playing before their smallest home crowds in almost three years. With yesterday's win, the Dodgers will have only lost one series this month (June 2-4 vs. White Sox). The Dodgers' are making footsteps, and others are listening...and shaking.

So there's no better person to start today than Clayton Kershaw, who has a 21.1 inning streak of scoreless innings, not to mention a beard that's getting crazily bushier each day. Kershaw was poised yesterday during the game, and there's no reason to think he'll get rattled today, even by a team that went 4-0 agagainst him last year (twice in the regular season, and twice in the NLCS).

But at least he's healthy. Miller, on the other hand, is coming off a truncated start in Colorado, where he was removed after 2.2 IP (3 ER, 5 BB) due to stiffness in his back. Still, his bullpen session Friday seemed fine, and I'm guessing the newly-married pitcher will probably be pretty nonplussed as he drives the parking lot circles while entering Dodger Stadium grounds tomorrow. Or perhaps I could put this, "Shelby: calm, and 'round the mountain"? That really doesn't make any sense, I know.

Chone Figgins wearing a "Vote for Dee for All Star" shirt in the dugout before the game.

Reds leading up north 1-0 going to 4th.

Shelby Miller, bad back and all, has not allowed a hit through 3.

That's right, a NO HITTER through 3.

AGon bunts for first base hit of the day for Dodgers. 2 on, no out with Matty coming up.

Matt singles in Puig. 1-0 Dodgers in 4th.

Homer Bailey at just 62 pitches through 6 against FH. Also, he's doing what Kid K and Beckett have already done this season. There, I said it without saying it.

Dre hits a 3 run shot. Dodgers now up 6-0 in fifth. Foam Party in the dugout.

Pubes breaks up the no no with a single in the seventh.

Reds still up 1-0 going into 8th.

To the ninth up north Reds hanging on to the lead 1-0. If Reds sweep FH it will be the first time in 42 years.

We're up 6-0 and Clayton is still dealing. Mellis hits a 1-out double, and Kerhaw Ks PH Jay and 3B Carpenter to get out of the inning.

Reds up 1-0 in the ninth (thanks Karen!)

CIncy extends its lead to 2-0 in the ninth. Man on second, top of the ninth

Jay Bruce HBP puts men at first and second for the Reds with one out. Giants' Jeremy Affeldt is crumbling here

Brandon Phillips with a scoring fly ball. Reds up 2-0, still batting in the ninth.

Phew!! My relief is here!! Thanks Saxy!

Reds now up 3-0.

Is today the day?

Someone in the dugout has set up SVS for a hot foot. They keep trying to light it.

karen said...

AGon lights up SVS' shoe. He smells it first and looks like he is trying to figure out what he smells then feels the heat on his foot. Dugout is cracking up.

Now 5-0 at AT&T, still top of ninth.

karen said...

Where'd you go Saxy??

karen said...

Official review takes a run away from the Reds. Now 4-0.

Steve Sax said...

5-0 in SF, with the wheels fully off the bus. Santiago Casilla comes in with a 4-0 deficit, relieving Affeldt, and promptly makes a throwing error to make it 5-0. However the Giants get the call back after review reverses it.

4-0 going to B9

Just saw the highlight of Ethier's three-run jack. Love the bubble machine and dugout dancing as he comes back to the dugout!
