Post-Game 24 Thread: Who to Blame?

MARLINS 5, DODGERS 4

Who to blame for today's ninth-inning collapse?

  • Jonathan Broxton, for walking the light-hitting Emilio Bonafacio and giving up singles to Hanley Ramirez and Omar Infante?
  • Jamey Carroll, for botching a gimme game-ending grounder, his third error of this road trip?
  • Vicente Padilla, for giving up a run in the eighth on a walk and two singles?
  • Jerry Sands, who started forward on the game-winning hit, which ended up going over his head?

The options seem endless, really.

This one goes on Carroll. I know broxton can suck at times but he did his job tonight. Can't ask a pitcher, especially a struggling one to get more than three outs.

Broxton, without question. Not just a walk, but two hard hit singles.

Or... Kuo for being hurt. Furcal for being hurt. Loney for not hitting close to his weight.

Possibilities really are endless.

I'm gonna go with Broxton on this one. Where is the shut-down Closer? I can't even remember the last time Brox had a 1-2-3 inning.

I'm with Nic. Game should have been wrapped up with that one.

I added a fourth option.

If you are going to throw Sands into this, you might as well throw Barajas into it because he got hurt and Gwynn ran for him.

Heck, blame Mattingly for using a defensive OF as a pinch runner in the middle of the game.

Not sure why we are debating this. It's not like any of us had expectations of better than .500 anyway. And with a starting IF of Miles-Carroll-Dejesus-Loney we were lucky to be in it.

Nah I can't blame sands on this one. The game was over after Carroll's error.

As for broxton I do think he is on his way out I can't pin tonight on him. There are not too many closers out there that are 1-2-3 guys.

I blame the mermaids. They are like the spring training hooters working some magic.

Or blame Loney for not being a better hitter. We wouldn't gave to play in so many close games.

I blame Derrick Caracter

I blame Oakland.

I have finally decided to blame it on the rain.

And we have had 12 inches of it since Thursday.

Loney squandered a shitload of opportunities this game, again. Another run cushion, and even Broxton might not have blown this one.

Steve Sax said...

@Steve, or should I say, Fab Morvan: Thank you.

I also blame Orel for dropping from fifth to eighth place in the fantasy league.

Steve Sax said...

Howard Jones doesn't think we should blame anyone.

I've been down on Loney since the first week of the season.Nice to see people are catching on to the disappointment, suckage and fail that is the so called King. I do hope he turns it around soon before he gets benched and shipped out to the Blue Jays.

I don't blame anyone. It was a hard luck loss in April. There are far more serious things to get one's panties in a bunch over.

Plus, I already prepared myself for the loss when Padilla allowed the first two guys on.

Kyle Baker said...

Setting aside the blaming Loney and just focusing on his contributions to date: he sucks and has regressed. While he's still, I would argue, one of the best defensive 1Bs out there, a team can't have a 1Bman - a power position - hitting for under .200 since last season's All Star Game break. That's damn near a season of below Mendoza for a 1B. Unacceptable. At this point, I believe he may have plateaued in terms of hitting and is now a team liability. I've believed for a long time that he should be given every chance - and I believe he now has - but it's time to move him.

I blame Darth Martin.

I can look at the menu but I just can't eat...

Fernie V said...

Oh Shit, I just saw the replay of walk off and sands misplayed that ball. That said they should move Sands to first base, let TG play left and let Loney try pitching again.

Go Kings Go!!

I Blame it On Rio (the bird movie!)

NicJ said...

Kings have to win this. They have a five minute power play to end the game!!

Josh S. said...

Loney can't even pitch Snuggies properly.

NicJ said...

Well the remainder of the powerplay continues to overtime.

NicJ said...

Typical.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Another shitty playoff series.

NicJ said...

I know they were missing their best player but the roster needs an overhaul. I wouldn't mind if Murray got the boot either.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Even with Kopitar missing, the offense did its part. The defense couldn't stop an elephant from rolling into the net.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

But then again, if the elephant gained enough momentum, nothing could stop it.

Change that to a trash can.

Steve Sax said...

Are you talking about that funny club sport called hockey again, Mr LA SC? That's so small-town of you!

Steve Sax said...

(just kidding, i went to a kings game this year and I'm sorry they lost)

I can dip my foot in the pool but can't take a swim.

Paul said...

2009 Broxton is not walking through that door.

That being said he pitched well enough for the save.

The Admiral has had a bad fielding road trip. Hope he snaps out of it.

Sands is not good in the outfield but seems so fitting in right field. I want him at 1B and James can go hit 35 homeruns for the Yankees.

Kyle Baker said...

I can watch the Dodgers play but I just can't make them win.

If you don't have Manny Ramirez fatigue, here is a pretty good article from the ny times on the goofy slugger.

Broxton can look at the menu, but he eats.

Broxton can dip his foot in the pool, but there's that water displacement thing that stops him from swimming.
