DODGERS' RECORD WITHOUT MANNY: 28-21
Clayton Kershaw (5-5, 3.70) vs. Jason Hammel (5-3, 4.21).
COMMENTS: It's the final countdown! One last Mannyless game — and none too soon, given how ineffective the bats were last night. The Dodgers have won Kershaw's last three starts, while Hammel has won five of his last seven starts.
Speaking of fives and sevens, the Dodgers have lost five of their last seven games. A win today would make them the majors' first 50-win team; a loss would start talk about whether Manny can save them from the threat of their first three-game losing streak.
I'm in the Vin Scully Press Box today, so look for some quotage from Joe Torre and hopefully some players. I'll be looking for a chili cheese Dodger Dog (or two) in the fifth inning. Oh yeah.

(Quiet, arteries! I'm the boss!)
Pierre, LF
Kemp, CF
Hudson, 2B
Ethier, RF
Loretta, 3B
Loney, 1B
Ausmus, C
Castro, SS
Kershaw, P
!!!
It would be pretty costly. You would have to get the cheese separately, in an order of nachos. And I don't know where you would get the chili. Maybe you could sneak some in your pockets.
See if you can get that Chili dog with Club Sauce!
I guess someone was listening to the comments yesterday about statistics stating your best hitter (Kemp) should bat 2nd or 4th. Interesting.
Nice. Had to look that one up.
Ausmus is catching Kershaw. That's good!
Ausmus is also batting. That's bad!
Going down to the clubhouse.
Ausmus has a higher batting avg than Martin.
That's...good?
Kemp hitting 2nd? Aussum!
PUZZLEWATCH: 1 Game.
That's a creative lineup, love Kemp is batting second.
russel martin had 1 RBI in June!
Koufax, I just saw that someone had left that comment about Martin. Even more remarkable is that the one RBI came on his own home run. Unbelievable.
I meant to say that someone left that comment over at Dodger Thoughts.
Furcal shouldn't be at the top of the lineup for the rest of the season unless he can raise his current OBP (.310) by about 80 pts.
haha erin, that is amazing, i forgot about that. i am really hoping he can turn it around after the break.
Yeah, 1 RBI is completely insane. And it was his home run. If it weren't for that, he'd have none!
Fowler's foul ball went into an empty suite. A guy from the next suite tried to jump the partition and did a faceplant.
Vin Scully, regarding how Hawpe has just plain murdered the Dodgers:
"He's gonna have his picture in every post office in southern California."
I really can't believe how bad the commercials are for "Newport Rib Company."
Boy, I hate Brad Hawpe
Kershaw looks comfortable so far.
Those are good news, Orel.
The problem with Kershaw is that he's falling behind hitters. It's great that he's coming back and getting them, but it takes a toll on his pitch count.
Listening to Vin on the radio (through my Iphone) it is great! (oops, gotta turn the volume down).
Orel: I wish I could have seen the faceplant...hehehe.
Gameday for me, I'm afraid. Enjoy the game, Orel.
We're making Jason Hammel look like Jason Marquis.
Another fast game Orel? Out by 2 pm?
I'm afraid about the outcome of this game. Why are they not hitting? it's not like they are facing Halladay.
Who forgot to leave a wake-up call for the bats?
I don't like the prospect of another pitchers' duel.
Could 0 be insurmountable?
Vin's really pushing my buttons.
Yeah, at this rate, Manny couldn't come soon enough.
We'll get some runs. Just need to figure this guy out...
Walks the pitcher?
How does Kershaw walk the pitcher?
Starting to fall off the rails....
throw strikes!
Back from lunch. Gameday Audio is making Vin sound like a robot.
Trust your de-fense!
*clap clap clapclapclap*
Why can't a team make our pitchers look like Cy Young winners?
Whew, they got Hawpe.
Way to wriggle out of it, Minotaur!
0-0 through 2.5
Torre's pre-game comments are up. Whew.
swing swing swing swing swing swing swing swing swing
This "Swing Like Vladdy Day" promotion is not working out well.
Hammel perfect through three....
Judging by the number of pitches he saw, Clayton Kershaw had a better at-bat than half the guys in the line-up.
Dodgers now have two hits in their last ten innings.
Not good.
Here comes Steiner to brighten my afternoon.
Kershaw's not even close.
i should stop watching if i dont want to go crazy
Kershaw's making me nervous.
3-6-1 DP!
Beautiful 3-6-1 DP!
Whoa. Sounds like Steiner's hyperbole was appropriate for once!
that was a nifty play...
Very nice DP.
The Dodgers aren't making me happy on the offensive side today, but the Red Sox just erased a 5-1 deficit and tied the game in the top of the ninth. So that's nice, especially given what happened last night.
Kershaw needs a visit from Rick Honeycutt.
And Kershaw comes back to walk Spillborghs
I think Steiner just broke my iphone speaker. He is so damn loud on some plays - he is going to get me in trouble for listening at work!!!!
Kershaw with four walks and 71 pitches. Not good.
AC, are you using the MLB app?
Orel: Yes I am. I was thinking of reviewing it in a future post.
Beautiful CS. Great defense is keeping us alive.
Spillborghs gets picked off. Kershaw's getting a lot of help from the fielders.
It sucks the iPhone can't get AM radio. I'd be interested in a review.
Very nice, Ausmus. If the pitcher is shaky, good defense will do.
E on Tulo. Finally a baserunner.
A Leadoff baserunner!!!!!!!!
Run Beast Run!!!
I wish the MLB app was discounted for those of us who subscribed to the regular Gameday Audio before it was released.
I think Steiner heard me and was pretty reserved on that boot by Tulu.
74 pitches through 4 innings for Kershaw, they're gonna burn up that young arm at this rate...
Kemp should hit the first extrabase line of the game.
Why must Matt Kemp make Torre regret batting him so high?
Why are we swinging at the first pitch? It hasn't worked for like 15 innings.
everyone seems to be swinging for the fences since Eithier's 3 HR monday...
The O-Dogg at least is fighting for his at bat.
Stealing is a crime!
Pierre steals second!
Loose rabbit sighting!
O-Dog could use another day off.
Okay, AE.
filthy pitch.
"Sol Man: Batting .310 (22-for-71) with 6 HR, 3 doubles and 17 RBI" reads Diamond Vision for Andre.
I think they mean during day games.
This is getting ridiculous.
Steiner forgot how many outs there were.
can we get these guys an eye doctor?
"Sol Man". Nice catchy spanglish. It'd be nice if he could have driven Pierre in.
Phillips dropped strike three and tried to tag Ethier as he was walking back toward the dugout. Ethier scooted away (toward the dugout) and the ump called him out.
Either should have stuck out his tongue and said "nah-nah"
AC, i'm watching you on the TV!
Scoreboard says Stewart K'd on a 91-mph fastball.
Kershaw at 81 pitches. If he's efficient this inning, he might get through six.
Hey Clayton: Don't walk the pitcher again.
I don't get it.
This is embarrasing. He can't even get one pitch into the strikezone against the pitcher.
Why isn't Honeycutt or Ausmus talking to him?
How many pitchers are pulled after 5 innings while throwing a one-hitter.
Kershaw at 97 pitches through five.
Maybe it's some crazy plan to keep Hammel on the basepaths to reduce his effectiveness.
First-pitch swining, last-pitch swinging, it doesn't seem to make a difference.
STOP SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH!
Josh - The first pitch swinging would suggest the opposite.
The Dodgers are becoming a Hilton Hotel for opposing pitchers.
AT LAAAAAST
IT'S A MIRACLE!
Thank you, James.
That was very nice of you, King James.
Now, would it be possible to bring Geoff to home plate, considering there is one out?
Geoffrey!
Back from lunch.
Did we get a hit yet?
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON
Loney would have been O-U-T had he tried for home.
What I love about Steiner and Monday: They'll say something completely wrong, then correct themselves after a pause, all while making it sound like it was one long sentence.
Monday:
"That was the Dodgers' first hit in two games...
...
...that got them into scoring position."
Bats are waking up! Go Castro!
Aussum!!
You don't squeeze with Juan Castro. And you don't make friends with salad!
Ah...gameday audio just kicked in.
"Monday:
'That was the Dodgers' first hit in two games...
...
...that got them into scoring position.' "
Corrections on the fly. I'm okay with that.
I'm afraid King James is slow to try a squeeze play with him.
Casey Blake has a helmet and bat in the dugout and he's running in place to warm up.
I'll take anyone to Rex Hudler
...except Joe Morgan.
Weak.
you dont have to swing at pitches at your collarbone, Juan
Thank you Rockies!
That was bad, Juan.
Blake PHing for Kershaw.
Kershaw: 5 innings of one-hit ball.
D'oh!
Please, Beard, please do something productive.
Come on, Beard!
And...Gameday Audio goes dead. I shouldn't have mocked Steiner and Monday.
Josh: mine is still working - check again!
Orel, you are at least 60 secs ahead of Gameday
Orel, tell me how the Dow closes today
I'm daydreaming about a Blake Pinch Hitting homer.
Count runs full.
bum-r
My heart just sank five feet.
Ugh. Not only did Beard strike out, I had to hear the KOA guys get excited about it.
Hammel only has 66 pitches through five frames. Wow.
so much for that.
KOA? You camping, Josh?
This is awful. The last time i felt like this it was around this time, in 2008.
Memo to the Dodgers: This is Jason HAMMEL, not Cole HAMELS
"KOA? You camping, Josh?"
It's the Rockies station. I guess they can't afford 4 call letters in Denver.
Belly, you are our only hope.
Bill Shaikin just got a Dodger Dog. As did I.
Josh, thanks. Newsradio 850AM, indeed.
Good thing tomorrow's an off-day.
Nice work by Belly.
Speaking of KOA, they've got a link to a video of a field reporter who "hits a man in the face."
Not exactly a punch, if you asked me.
Orel: who got to his Dog first, you or Shaikin?
I'm guessing you were the wiener.
Time for Karina to call the House Elf and ask it to generate some Dodger Runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, by the way, Karl Malden died today. Will that take us over 800 comments?
I just peed next to Mark Sweeney.
Hopefully not on him, Orel.
A Beast is loose!
More JP goodness.
"Hopefully not on him, Orel."
It was tempting.
House elves can't do anything for the Dodgers, unless they are signed to play with the Dodgers.
They are creatures with outstanding magical powers, so maybe they could score more than 5 runs in a game.
p.s: this is Harry Potter lore.
Beast Mode!
Other benefits of house elves:
For the most part, they refuse to get paid!
No worries Frank!
Orel: Did you interview him while you peed? Quiz and Whiz.
Though, Neeebs, we could use a spell called "Wingardium Leviosa" so when they hit the ball, we could move the ball in the air.
I'll shut up now with Harry Potter stuff.
Orel: Did you say BEAST IS LOOSE while in the bathroom with Sweeney?
Right, Fanerman! if they hire house elves , maybe parking would be free!
You can free a house elf by giving Jermaine Dye or Dustin Pedroia to him.
I FEEL LIKE I'M GONNA EXPLODE HERE
KABC feed still dead for me.
Dodgers offense is dead TO me.
Beast Fail!!! =(
So...Manny back on Friday, huh?
I think I just met my sodium requirements for the year.
Whoa, did the Ump die while calling strike?
"You can free a house elf by giving Jermaine Dye or Dustin Pedroia to him."
Very nice play, sir. My respect to you.
"The Rockies have played in one World Series — 2007 versus Boston."
Thanks, Diamond Vision.
Orel, did you take a peak at Sweeney?
Belisario is nasty today.
So much for the combined one-hitter.
At 75 pitches, Hammel is batting for himself.
christ
Damn, Steiner freaked me out.
GREAT catch by Ethier!
As long as he doesn't draw another walk...
Headline on MLB.com:
"Webb won't have surgery; eyes return"
I had no idea he had lost his eyes.
Well, i have to get out. Reunion with my editor. Go Blue!
mlb.tv is staying with GBA these days
have fun Karina! hope you return to a happy post game thread!
Interesting — Andre went opposite-field without the shift.
Editor? Did you used no work at The Daily Prophet? Have fun!
used to*
I think Tron's up in the bullpen.
Nice barehanded grab by Bowa!
is this kid the next Jamey Wright?
Hammels is pitching Loretta inside. Loretta trying to get hit.
"Headline on MLB.com:
'Webb won't have surgery; eyes return'
I had no idea he had lost his eyes."
He was on the DL with an Oedipal complex.
200
Ah, good. KABC is back. The only good thing about KOA was the radio ad for beef with a stoned-out-of-his-gourd Matthew McConaughey.
