Game 113 Thread: August 8 @ Reds, 4.10p

Dodgers start Chad Billingsley, RHP (7-2, 3.43) vs. Aaron Harang, RHP (10-3, 3.54).

Dodgers: 58-54 (T-3rd place NL West, 4.0 GB, L5)
Reds: 48-64 (5th place NL Central, 11.0 GB, W3)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Back at sea level after a bad experience in the Mile High City, Billingsley nearly repeated his complete-game effort in Houston. Dueling Arizona's Doug Davis, Billingsley went 7 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts before running out of gas and allowed only one run, although it was Chris Snyder's home run and it was enough to tag the right-hander with his second consecutive defeat. He's allowed 11 home runs in 86 2/3 innings.

Reds: Harang hasn't pitched since leaving last Saturday's game after facing just five batters with a sore lower back, but he'll throw a short side session and batting practice on Saturday and interim manager Pete Mackinan said there is a "good chance" Harang will start. He has been the ace of the staff this season and has allowed more than three runs just once since May 20.

From Inside the Dodgers:

Pierre, CF
Furcal, SS
Martin, C
Kent, 2B
Ethier, LF
Nomar, 3B
Loney, 1B
Kemp, RF
Billingsley, P

Is this the first time that Ethier, Kemp and Loney have started together?

Aaron Harang. Not a handsome man.

The streak of scoreless innings reaches 21, with a 1-2-3 inning for the Dodgers in the second. Luckily, the Dodgers aren't losing yet, 0-0 going to the bottom of the second.

NOW we're back to normal. Third inning, Reds go up 1-0. This seems eerily familiar.

Dodgers will score in 5th inning

Dear Grady,
Your lineup creativity sucks.

Chad's at 67 pitches, with none out in the fourth (and two on)

I don't know how Billingsley escaped that inning unscathed, but he did. On to the fifth, 1-0 Reds.

Dodgers go down in the fifth when Chad Billingsley is counted upon to score Nomar from second. He doesn't. No runs are scored.

The streak of scoreless innings is 24.

and with that I shall close the prognosticating portion of my comments

I never did specify which game

lesson learned: never bet against the Dodgers not scoring

Dodgers are silent in the sixth, streak is at 25

1-0 Reds, Proctor on the mound

Nothing for LA in the seventh...streak at 26!!!

The suspense is killing me

Could Orel's 59 inning scoreless streak be in danger?

According to blogging baseball, the Phillies had a streak of 38 consecutive scoreless innings back in 1960. The Dodgers are over two-thirds of the way there already!!! Why settle for second-best??!!

Steve Sax said...

Loney leads off with a double, threatening the streak

Steve Sax said...

All right! Matt Kemp lines out and it doubles Loney off of second. None on, two out, blink of an eye. The streak is still within reach...

Eric Karros said...

yes - maybe if we start rooting for them to not score, they will score

Steve Sax said...

Saenz walks but leave it to 0-for-4 Juan Pierre to line out, preserving the streak. 27 consecutive scoreless innings..

Eric Karros said...

Wow, Bills is looking at two consecutive 1-0 losses.

Bob Timmerman over at DT says (comment #242) that the Cubs had a streak of 48 scoreless innings in 1968. If this is true, the Dodgers' 27 consecutive scoreless innings is nice, but only at 56% of the record. We have a long way to go.

It is conceivable, though.

Furcal and Martin roll over in the ninth...it's up to Kent...

AND IT'S OVER!!! 28 STRAIGHT SCORELESS INNINGS!!!

Wonderful job, Dodgers. Get out there and do it again tomorrow!
