Game 114 Thread: August 9 @ Reds, 9.35a

Dodgers start Brett Tomko, RHP (2-9, 5.56) vs. Phil Dumatrait, LHP (0-1, 16.20).

Dodgers: 58-55 (4th place NL West, 5.0 GB, L6)
Reds: 49-64 (5th place NL Central, 10.0 GB, W4)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: It was another wobbly start for Tomko, who allowed three runs with four walks in a 43-pitch first inning and appeared headed for an early exit. But he got back on track and followed with four scoreless innings to keep the Dodgers in the game against the Giants, leaving after five innings. He is 2-3 lifetime against Cincinnati, his former team.

Reds: Dumatrait's last start was his Major League debut, and it didn't go as well as he would have liked. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts. He never got in a groove as the first four Nationals reached base and he was chased in the fourth after throwing 82 pitches.

COMMENTS: The streak is at 28 consecutive scoreless innings. Can we count on an early-morning start to keep our bats somnambulating through another nine, to bring the total to 37? Stay tuned (yawn!).

mlb.com Gameday is on the blink again. It shows Dodgers scored a run.

Bases loaded, none out--and we can only score one, on a Kent sac fly before Kemp GIDP.

I will say this, though--at least Grady shook up the lineup. And I LOVE Pierre batting in the seven hole!!!

Unfortunately, Juan is still playing D for us. Which means a fly out to center results in BOTH runners advancing, from first and second to second and third.

Can't Pierre get the ball thrown to second base in time, for pete's sake???

Yay, Tomko quickly gives up a run so it's 1-1. Hope you enjoyed the lead, Dodgers. For all of four minutes.

We're on a tear! 2-1 Dodgers.

Save some for the next game, guys.

Ha, I bag on Pierre and he shows me up with a double. Another Sac Fly from Martinez and we've got the lead back, 2-1.

We should be tracking Hits with RISP, since we still are sucking. Furcal Ks with Pierre stranded at third.

Brett Tomko remains determined to have the Dodgers lose their seventh straight. He promptly gives up the 2-1 lead, so we're now down 3-2 after 2.

Russell Martin is 2-for-2 (in the two-hole). Mine eyes deceive me!

Matt Kemp didn't get the memo on swinging later in the count. And as a result, he's 0-for-2 with 2 LOB.

Great dive my Olmedo to tag him out. Even better was Steiner saying "and the richter scale measured 7.2" after Olmedo belly flopped after the tag. Classic.

Dammit, score a run. They better win this one for Young - he is 3 for 3 today.

4-4 tie, bottom of the ninth, Grady shuffling the lineup like mad for a change.

I don't want to say this game is critical, but...

Dunn ejected after his strikeout....

Man on second, two out, bottom of the ninth...

All right! Proctor gets the FO, we go to the 10th.

Here comes the Dodgers' 10-run inning.

Hey, with a leadoff single in the 10th, let's sub for 4-for-4 Delwyn Young with Andre Ethier. Oh wait, Andre flies out to the second baseman on the second pitch of the at bat.

Nice decision, Grady.

Ramon Martinez strands Mtt Kemp at third. What a surprise.

Furcal, 0-for-4, just popped a HR!

Steve Sax said...

So I guess in must come Saito.

He may need a map to find the mound.

Steve Sax said...

Saito gives up a leadoff single. This is painful.
