Game 117 Thread: August 11 vs. Rays, 5p

Clayton Kershaw (10-7, 1.91) vs. Jeremy Hellickson (10-5, 4.77).

Down 6-0 in the first game of this series with the red-hot Tampa Bay devil-less Rays, I thought this was going to be a rough weekend. But after a magnificent comeback victory Friday, and a big shutout win yesterday, I'm trying to prepare for today's End of Rays.

ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball will feature our *still unsigned* ace, Clayton Kershaw, whose 1.91 ERA leads the majors. Hellickson isn't bad, though this 4.77 ERA is about a run and a quarter north of his lifetime average, making this the worst ERA+ (81) of his four-year career.

Oh, and this afternoon marks the last game for James Loney at Dodger Stadium, possibly forever. Loney has a OPS of .807 this season, better any of the last four and a half years of his Dodger career. I always liked Loney as a Dodger (an early SoSG favorite), but he definitely disappointed after showing flashes of brilliance in his first two Dodger seasons. He never seemed to hit consistently after those years. So it's with mixed feelings that I look at his 10 HR and offensive resurgence this season, his first as a Ray. Loney, no more.

Godspeed, James!

Good news: Baltimore @ SF is the MLB.com free game of the day.

Bad news: SF leads 2-0, T4.

Love the pun, but not sure I could dislike that video any more. Black leather with silver studding, dude has all sorts of angst as expressed by repeated shots of him wringing his hands in various ways like Mrs Dusty does when League comes in to pitch.

I did a double-take when at first I thought that said "Goodspeed, James" and was thinking, good speed and Loney have never been synonymous.

How was Loney received in his first AB at the Stadium? I'm hoping he was at least given some applause. I like the guy, even though he frustrated the hell out of me the last two seasons.

Steve Sax said...

Orioles 10, Giants 2, B9

Steve Sax said...

@Cliff: I think someone said Loney was well-received

Steve Sax said...

Mets 8, D'backs 5, T9

BJ Killeen said...

@cliff they did a big welcome James Loney on the big board and he got applause.

I missed the beginning of the game when JLo was first introduced. But the rest of the time the crowd didn't boo him to speak of.

Hellickson, out!

Dusty Baker said...

Actually I don't like knocking the pitcher out early like this. Means Dodger hitters haven't seen him yet so could cool us off.

Steve Sax said...

Of course, dee Gordon bunts, and gets on--meaning that he will bunt the next 30 times up (and not succeed).

Sigh.

BJ Killeen said...

Dee sucks at everything else but he can run

Cliff Beefpile said...

That was actually a nice play by the pitcher...got a great throw off, except for the fact that it would have gone foul.

Dusty Baker said...

Kid 'n Play beats out a weird bunt/hit thingy to bring up Kid K.

Steve Sax said...

Didn't see the Puig double and score. I'll take it though

Dusty Baker said...

Nice two minute soliloquy about how great the Rays are. They ain't bad, but it sorta doesn't fit given that we're about to sweep them and give them their fifth straight loss on the road.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Man, the Stadium looks packed! For sure we're surpassing 4 million this year.

Cliff Beefpile said...

The Rays don't pass the smell test. They're like the Braves of the AL, destined to be also-rans.

Fred's Brim said...

My final take on DG: Speedy, defense is there but highly-questionable throwing arm that has never developed. And will never learn how to hit. I'm ready to cut bait on this MSB.

Dusty Baker said...

^Repeat

get it together, Dee

BJ Killeen said...

Steve Sax said...

PGT up! Also not from this game!

Steve Sax said...

Kershaw can hit the ball farther than Dee Gordon

Dusty Baker said...

One of my biggest sports pet peeves: lame nicknames given to broadcasters by adding "y" or "ie" or "ey" to someone's name. For example, the one we just heard: "Kruky". It doesn't make him any more human or familiar by calling him that. Runner up: "Gardie" for Ron Gardenhire.

Steve Sax said...

In a game where bunting for outs and throwing errors yielded points, Dee Gordon would be king.

Dusty Baker said...

All these PGTs going up and no Mr. F? Weak sauce, Fanerman!

Steve Sax said...

Unfortunately, said game is not baseball.

Fred's Brim said...

BJ Killeen said...

Surprisingly I'm open minded about TV shows and always try them out before not liking them. However, I just can't like BB. I watched probably 6 or so and quit. Like that so many people get something out of it, but for me it's tripe. #ToEachHisOwn
