Game 80 Thread: June 28 vs. Angels, 7p

Chad Billingsley (6-7) vs. Jered "I'm Not Jeff" Weaver (7-7).

COMMENTS: Okay, so we won last night's game 6-0, with a surprisingly effective performance from starter Chan Ho Park and two--count 'em, two!--home runs from a punchless offense. Before you get all excited, remember that we won the opening game of a series three other times this month, and we went on to win only one of those three series. Me, I'm still concerned about the Red Scare of the AL West-leading Angels; if we are to make like the caption in the above poster, such that "the people and the army are one," can we please gather the resources to drown out the Reds in the crowd and on the field tonight? (That's right, yet another historical-reference Game Thread, brought to you by your comrades at SoSG.)

And thanks very much to SoSG reader John G for his kindness and generosity in offering up tickets for tonight's game!

I wonder what Dodgers team we'll see tonight? The one that scores early and often and wins games or the one that plays like the Bad News Bears?

Eric Karros said...

I'm not really familiar with the first team...

Anyways folks just checking in. I gotta drive home so I'll see y'all later

Steve Sax said...

stace, as long as it's not the team that scores early but still plays like the Bad News Bears, then I'm okay with it. Though I hear you, last night's Dodger squad was one I hadn't seen in 50-odd games.

I am out at dinner tonight too, and not with Orel. Will catch up later!

It doesn't look like the Dodgers are going to be able catch any lucky breaks tonight against Weaver. They need to break out the big sticks if they want to get any hits and score any runs!

stace3125 said...

Looks like a pitcher's duel so far.

Eric Karros said...

Stace what's the inning and score? I'm at a traffic light probably being a road hazard

stace3125 said...

The Dodgers finally make it all the way to third, doesn't matter that it came on an error. Finally we score!! Error or no error we'll take it.

karina said...

Dodgers 1-Angels 0, i'm just coming back home, give me a minute to figure out how they scored the run.

stace3125 said...

EK, the Dodgers just scored 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

karina said...

stace, are you watching the game on tv?

stace3125 said...

They just walked Bills. Top of the order. This could be our rally inning!

karina said...

Kemp reached first for an error, stole second base, with another error, he reached 3rd. DeWitt with the sac fly.

stace3125 said...

No, I'm listening on my computer. I don't get local cable.

stace3125 said...

So much for the rally. At least we're on the board.

karina said...

It seems King James made a great catch, but gameday is slow and i can't see it.

karina said...

It's ok. On the 6th, we'll have Ethier, Martin, Kent and possibly King James.

stace3125 said...

I just realized that Weaver is pitching a no hitter even though the Dodgers are winning in the sixth inning.

karina said...

Between both starting pitchers tonight: 11 K, 5 BB, 1 H

stace3125 said...

But on the other side Bills is pitching a one hitter with no runs scored.

stace3125 said...

Great play by Ethier!! He has a great arm!! He's very underappreciated.

karina said...

I was going to say that. The Dodgers run might be possibly the "dirtiest" of all season: a couple of errors, a stolen base and a sac fly.

In spite they haven't hit, Dodgers are winning. These anomalies make me the devoted fan i am, this sport never stops amazing me!

karina said...

It seems Aybar didn't respect/know Ethier's arm. He singled but was out at 2nd.

stace3125 said...

One of Bills weaknesses is his walks. Now two on with two out because of Kent's error. Defense needs to help him out.

karina said...

Anderson walked. Guerrero reached on a error courtesy by Kent.

karina said...

This is a pitchers' duel with a Bad News Bears twist.

stace3125 said...

Hopefully Bills can shake off the error and get out of the inning.

karina said...

He struck out Hunter!

stace3125 said...

Great job!! One of his best accolades is his strikeouts!

stace3125 said...

I'm hoping that Weaver is starting to run out of gas! We need some hits and runs, ASAP!!!

karina said...

Kent HPB. King James is up!

karina said...

and he struck out...*sigh*

stace3125 said...

Down 1,2, hit by pitch then strikeout by Loney. Will the 1 - 0 score hold up?

stace3125 said...

Do you think this will be Bills last inning?

stace3125 said...

I think that Ethier shows why he should be the everyday right fielder right there!!

karina said...

Maybe. At least the bullpen is rested.

karina said...

Agree, Ethier shouldn't sit (unless he needs some rest).

I thought these games were going to be defined by the bullpen .

stace3125 said...

Nobody is warming up yet though. Wonder what Torre is thinking.

stace3125 said...

I'm surprised they're pinch hitting for Weaver. He's been pitching great except for the errors behind him. They should've seen if he could have finished with the no hitter.

stace3125 said...

Hopefully the 7th inning stretch will wake up the Dodger bats!!

karina said...

Bills got out of the jam.

I think Torre will play his chips according what they can do against the new Angels pitcher.

karina said...

I understand Scioscia. He realized this is a very close game and he understands the value of the Dodgers bullpen. He tried to score some runs in the only chance his players gave him in the entire game so far.

karina said...

Kemp grounded after 2 balls...

stace3125 said...

Seems like Kemp is impatient when he's up to bat. Berrora needs another hit like he had last night to get us started up.

stace3125 said...

PLEASE DON'T LET SWEENEY BAT!!! He's an automatic out!!

stace3125 said...

Doesn't matter. Seems like Berrora is an all or nothing guy.

karina said...

Broxton on the mound. It's been a quick game, are you taking the time of the game, stace?

karina said...

Bottom of the 8th. Young grounds out, Pierre struck out and Ethier flies out.

stace3125 said...

It's been 2 hours and maybe 15 minutes. Both pitchers seem to be working fast and getting batters out who were swinging early in the count.

karina said...

Saito for the 9th.

stace3125 said...

This is going to be funny if they win without even getting a hit. It seems like that's the way things have been going for the Dodgers lately.

stace3125 said...

One down, two to go!!!

karina said...

A win is a win. Maybe i didn't get to enjoy the whole game, but i bet it's gonna be an unforgettable one.

stace3125 said...

Great play by Maza!!! One more to go!!

Eric Karros said...

Hi Karina, Stace - thanks for keeping the Gamethread running. I just got home. A 9th inning lead yet no hits ? I'm trying to digest what's going on...

stace3125 said...

The Dodgers will take the win no matter how they can get it!!!

stace3125 said...

Down to one strike!!

Eric Karros said...

I agree! I better not have jinxed them by showing up...

karina said...

No worries, Eric. You maybe will be our lucky charm.

stace3125 said...

Dodgers need to hold them any way they can!

karina said...

It seems Maza made a diving catch. Maybe they haven't hit, but it looks like they have made great defensive plays throughout the game.

Eric Karros said...

Crap, Kendrick doubles!? Maybe I did jinx them. If the Angels score here I'm staying away from the game threads until after the all-star break.

karina said...

Don't say that, Eric! Saito can pull off this one.

stace3125 said...

Saito needs to keep his composure. He needs to keep his confidence in his pitches and remember how he got here in the first place. He can do it!!!

Eric Karros said...

Yes, the power of positive thinking...

stace3125 said...

I knew Saito could do it!!! Great game no matter how they won it!! See you tomorrow!

Eric Karros said...

Woo hoo! What did you and I say yesterday, Karina? The Dodgers can take 2 of 3...and they did! Now let's go for the sweep!

karina said...

Ditto, Eric! They'll sweep because they are listening to us!

Eric Karros said...

Throw another binary shrimp on the barbie! But this one's a win!

Eric Karros said...

Ok goodnight karina & stace!

Eric Karros said...

And my new slogan is: hits are overrated!

stace3125 said...

I hope you guys haven't jinxed them by hoping for a sweep. It would be great but they seem to play to win one game at a time lately.

karina said...

hahahahahahahahahaha, Eric! good night and suena con los angelitos!

nice to meet you, stace.

Orel and Sax, i hope you're enjoying your dinners

(tomorrow it's Erin's bday)

Eric Karros said...

when is your birthday karina?

karina said...

november 11th

stace3125 said...

Karina, I enjoyed listening to the game with you.

Eric Karros said...

I expect you to have a huge party on 11/11/11. Ok, goodnight!

Orel said...

Wow, looks like I missed a doozy! No hits? No problem!

Steve Sax said...

Orel, that sounds like something that might make a good title for a post.
