Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 4.91) vs. Greg Maddux (3-4, 3.48).
COMMENTS: Kershaw...Maddux. 20 years old...42 years old. Lefty...righty. Zero wins...350 wins. It's a game of contrasts in San Diego tonight, yet the plights of the Dodgers and Padres are disturbingly similar. The Dodgers are 3.5 games out of first place and the Padres are 6.5 back, with the Giants wedged firmly between them. However, the Padres have won five straight, including a four-game sweep of the Mets. The Dodgers have not won a series in their past five tries. Additionally, the Dodgers have lost both times the Lakers have played the Celtics in the NBA Finals. (Oddly enough, so have the Lakers.) So while you're flipping back and forth between both games tonight, think good thoughts for the L.A. team that needs to win. Whichever one that is.

Where's Andy?!
Damn it. I was so hoping I'd come here to check the lineup and see Andy's name it.
In other news, Arizona is currently down 5-1 to the Mets.
Hey Orel, nice Plaschke-esque GT! Bill couldn't have said it better himself.
"Manager Joe Torre said last week that when LaRoche is called up, he will be used as a backup at first and third base." At least let him PH or something, Joe.
I wonder if we should start a "Plaschke-esque" label.
D'backs tie it up at 5.
Rain delay (presumably) in New York.
JP greets Maddux with a single to left!
JPSQ ASAP
MLB.tv appears to be working for me tonight (for now), but I'm stuck with the San Diego announcers. Boo.
Clean-shaven Martin with the RBI single!
Hey Erin are you going to get the new iPhone?
Orel, it makes me crazy that I'm even considering it. It's only been six months since I spent $400 on the one I own, so I think I have to give it a little bit before I go out and get a new one.
That's the problem with technology, it just keeps getting sexier.
Hey comes Clayton! With the lead, no less!
I'm feeling a little angry that they're making it faster and cheaper. It's like a slap in the face to those of us who got the first wave. Apple doesn't normally operate that way. I wish there would at least be some super fantastic update for the older phones, but I'm not seeing any of that happening.
Hairston greets Kershaw with a single to center.
Isn't there a free software update for the old phones?
...and Jeff Kent pulls his best Steve Sax impression, airmailing a possible DP ball almost into the stands.
There is an update, but the real issue is the network. The new phone will operate on a better, faster network, but as far as I can tell, the older phones are stuck with the slower one.
The strange thing is, there has been no talk of an update that would allow pictures to be sent in text messages, which I think is a major problem with the phone. It's shocking that they haven't addressed that issue.
Kershaw w/RISP: .071 ERA. Other times: .341.
Could that be a third-party fix?
Sit down, Giles!
That I don't know. I think it has something to do with the network, actually, so maybe the newer phones will have the capability (though I haven't read that). I haven't done an extreme amount of research, to be honest, so maybe someone out there has a solution I don't know about.
Chin music to Adrian Gonzalez!
MLB.tv has given up on me. Back to Gameday, I guess.
Gonzalez didn't even lift his bat off his shoulders and Kershaw still threw balls. Must have been an unintentional intentional walk.
So I guess the Gameday rendering of the batter was accurate when it came to Gonzalez's at-bat? That thing didn't take the bat off its shoulder, either.
Maddux spears DeWitt's grounder up the middle. Hope he has room for that 18th Gold Glove.
They barely got Berroa. But an out's an out.
Greg Maddux has faced all nine batters in two innings, but he only needed 31 pitches to record those outs. The dude might be a magician.
Looks like the D'backs and Mets are back at it. Still 5-5.
Didn't he throw 23 pitches in the first inning? Then again, the bottom third of our lineup isn't exactly...intimidating.
I guess the second inning was quick. I'm trusting the Gameday report that said 31 pitches. DeWitt swung at the second pitch, and Berroa and Kershaw each saw three pitches. So that makes sense.
First pitch to Barrett is a 71-mph curveball. Nice.
There are at least three guys in the Padres' lineup that I have never heard of at all. Huber?
Loney with a clean throw to Berroa for the force at second, but the throw to Kershaw at first is too late. We are sludgy up the middle.
Huber? I hardly know her! HA HA HA
Kershaw through two with 27 pitches.
I want chocolate.
Chocolate would be delicious right about now.
Wow. Someone sent out a memo telling the guys to not stay in too long against Maddux. He's out of the third on only six pitches.
Mmmm...Trader Joe's 72% Dark Chocolate.
They must know they have to take pitches, but Maddux probably makes his pitches look hittable when they're not.
Lucky for me, there's a Trader Joe's directly across the street from my hotel here in Chicago. I don't like dark chocolate, but there are delicious crispy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that are like crack.
Celtics within two.
If Trader Joe's went public, we'd be all over it.
D'backs 6, Mets 5.
(top of the 8th)
Meanwhile, Kershaw is losing it a bit here with those two consecutive walks.
Celtics up 4.
According to Gameday, Kershaw is hitting 96-97 mph.
That hit was off the glove of a diving Kent. He looked like a redwood falling, serious.
And then Gonzalez hits a 77 mph curveball for an RBI single to tie the game.
I've watched a few Lakers' games this season. Who the hell is Ariza?
Ariza was injured for most of the season. He was only reactivated for the playoffs.
Hit & run with Loney & Martin gives the Dodgers men on 1st & 3rd, no out!
Shit! Mr. Gold Gloves turns the 1-3 DP!
Was that ball hit hard by Kemp? Gameday says it was a line drive.
Kemp hit it hard but Maddux played it perfectly.
Fashion Police is glad Martin shaved the mustache,
Thanks for the updates, i'm very sick tonight!
D'backs 8, Mets 5, top 9. Thanks, Mets.
Epale Karin! What's wrong?
Way to go, Mets. Arizona came back from a 5-1 deficit.
Stephen Drew homered off Wagner, Dbacks 8, Mets 1, top 9th inning
That was a nine-pitch inning for Kershaw. Maddux saw six of those pitches.
i don't know, i have a very bad headache and i've thrown up, in spite i haven't eaten much today :(
That was strange. Maddux K'd on a ball in the dirt. Martin tagged him to be safe, and Maddux asked for the ball. Martin gave it to him.
Berroa singles!
That's awful, Karina. Please take care of yourself.
Maddux not only pitches very little for us, he also makes our pitcher to make lots of pitches against him, makes a great catch that kills the rally...that's the problem with future Hall of Famers, i insist, why on earth he wasn't signed by the Dodgers?
That's really weird. Maybe Maddux thinks there's something on the ball?
Or maybe he knows Kershaw will be a superstar, so he wants to have the ball from an at-bat against the kid.
The "MVP" chant in L.A. for Kobe made more sense to me before he was actually named MVP. Now it just seems redundant.
Maddux's agent (Boras) wanted $$$ for a multi-year deal. Dodgers didn't want to commit that to a guy in his 40's.
Con-grat-u-la-tions! is just too difficult for the crowd to coordinate.
D'backs 9, Mets 5, bottom 9.
Jeff Kent first-ball swinging (AGAIN), fouls out with men on 1st & 3rd.
Five batters in the inning, and Maddux still only needed 13 pitches to get rid of us. I'm fascinated by his economy.
They don't call him The Professor for nothing.
Yeah, no kidding. I suppose I should be used to it by now, but he still just always seems like he should be hittable, and yet he isn't.
It's all over in New York. Nice knowing ya, Willie.
83 pitches through five for Kershaw. Is he allowed back out for the sixth?
Good question, Erin. I think so, but with a quick hook if he gets in trouble.
DeWitt swings at the first pitch, again. Five innings on just 70 pitches from Maddux.
bad baserunning again. Maddux is pitching in San Diego, how are they going to win this game?
Perfect throw to the plate. Loney gave Barrett a spirited bop but he was out by a mile.
Corrected:
Didn't even see that there was a play at the plate. Was it close? Loney is such an awkward runner.
I'll try to take care of myself, i guess i might have the flu or maybe it's the stress because of school.
I guess Bowa figured we're desperate for runs, let's test Hairston's arm.
Could Bowa take some some credit to the bad baserunning?
We can't afford to lose you, Karina!
Oh well, if you compare Maddux's health and skills as a pitcher to some recent players (current and former) on the Dodgers roster, we could say he wasn't that expensive.
And:
he could be a better pinch hitter to you know who...
I suppose now is the time for the quick hook for Kershaw.
Orel, you're making me smile!
We'd lose 33% of the commenters if you weren't here tonight, Karina.
Lakers are trying to give this one away.
Erin, you're such a stathead.
We're banking on Scott Proctor in a tie game with two runners on the bases? Okay.
I'm a blogger, Orel. What else do I have to do while I hang out in my mom's basement all day?
Seriously, Dodger fans in Los Angeles, Chicago and Venezuela chatting away. How cool is that?
Meanwhile, how uncool is Proctor WPing in the go-ahead run for the Padres?
Proctor, man. That is the worst thing you could do to give up the lead. At least make them earn it. Damn it.
Scott "Butterfingers" Proctor fields the ball then drops it. Twice.
Kershaw must be turning in his grave.
Oh my god. And then he commits an error?
By the way, I had comment #100. Again. I have a knack.
In this park, a two-run deficit might as well be ten. Two out, let's get out of this with minimum damage.
You and your numbers again. How's basement life treating you?
That should just about do it for the Celtics.
Lakers win, barely. Sorry, Erin.
The Celtics could have easily won that one. Hardly a statement game by the Lakers.
It's okay. I don't really care that much. I'm just glad I'm not in Los Angeles right now to listen to all the Laker "fans" running off their mouths.
Did you see on Dodger Thoughts that Nomar is going to play shortstop when he starts his rehab assignment?
Strange—Giles overran the ball and had to duck it at the last second, giving Young the double.
We'll take it, I guess. But now Pierre has to contribute something other than an out.
We gotta admit Young has been great on pinch-hitting.
You know, Erin, I don't mind that. We've got DeWitt and LaRoche at 3rd and Nomar can't play 2nd. Might as well as get him in at SS, where he can't possibly be worse than Hu or Berroa (offensively, at least).
I just saw Martin's disappointment face when Proctor gave the wild pitch. Unfortunately, he can't play all positions.
True, Karina. Young should get some starts when Kemp serves his suspension.
Karina, what do you think of the baby-faced Martin?
but he might go on the DL as soon as he tries to catch the first hard line over there.
Okay, that was just bizarre. Padres' LF & CF converge on the pop-up...and just let it drop between then. Young didn't even advance, it looked so catchable. The Padres are just dying to give this to us.
Guest fashion police approves. He couldn't rock that mustache, he looked like he was in a costume or like he was an extra on Boogie Nights.
I'd certainly like to see what his range at SS can be after all this time away. I love me some Nomar, even though I realize he's darn near useless these days as a ballplayer.
Young didn't advance on Pierre's single? Did it look like it would be caught?
Why? Is Young a bad fielder?
Oh, man. Now we just need a fly ball to tie the game. Come on, Andre!
I like Nomar too, despite his uselessness.
Bases loaded, one out. If we can't at least tie it up here, we don't deserve to win.
Rancho ardiendo indeed!
I haven't been paying attention to the Padres at all this season, but based on the ERAs of these relievers, I would say their bullpen is not nearly as dominant this season as it was last year.
Did Kent swing at the first pitch in every at-bat? Come on, dude. You have to see what the new guy is throwing.
it seems i'm the only Dodger fan who doesn't like some Nomar, though his first year with the team was awesome.
At least Kent didn't hit into a DP. And the only good thing I can say about him tonight.
KARINA'S SON!
Well, Nomar was magic for the Red Sox, which is really why I love him, and always will. I liked when he came to L.A. so I could actually see him play, but it's pretty obvious his career is nearly over.
Oh, yay. Nothing better than seeing "in play, run(s)."
AND he was smart enough to take second after the throw went to the plate.
Big-time from Martin. Very nice. And now they're loading the bases to get to Kemp. Oh, make them pay, please, Matt.
Rancho ardiendo again for Kemp....
Another no-decision for Kershaw.
I love my adopted son!
And the weirdness of baseball means that Proctor is in line for the win.
Heck yeah! Kemp beat the throw to first, then Martin beat the throw to the plate! 5-2 Dodgers!
How strange that the Padres just misplayed themselves out of the game, yet we're the team with two errors. Or was that a typo?
Karina, do you remember the "4+1" home run game against the Padres? Nomar's role in that game helped his status in L.A. Plus, he ended that season with a walk-off grand slam against the D'backs (Sax & I were there!).
Wow, Kemp made a difficult catch there, running across his body. And he made it look easy.
Beimel might have gotten robbed on that close play at first, replays are inconclusive.
I remember those games! wow! i'm glad you both were there.
I guess i never liked him, even when he was in Boston. It's silly, i know. At least i was right when i never liked LoDuca.
Adrian Gonzalez is a marvelous hitter, I feel anxious.
It seems Kemp is putting together his act (or trying)
DeWitt made a great diving play to his right to save the double. Beimel owes him a beer.
Or maybe a non-alcoholic alternative.
Broxton in. I don't like the idea of him pitching more than an inning.
Your instincts were right on Lo Duca, Karina. Me, I thought he was great.
Gun says Broxton is hitting 98 mph!
#150!
The impressive thing about Russell's hit in the 7th is that the pitch was low and away and Russell just went with it.
How in heck can Broxton bunt into a DP?
By being as slow as an ox, that's how.
We should get Martin in the All-Star game, just like last year, however, his competition is harder this year.
Jody Gerut hit .390 in Venezuela!
I know. He destroyed Aguilas in a four game series in Maracaibo. I don't wanna remember the things he did in a doubleheader a day before my birthday.C'mon, Broxton, get him!
I know, Soto, Molina and McCann are all deserving.
Broxton: your DP bunt is all forgiven.
Broxton K's Gerut! "That's for ruining Karina's birthday!" he says!
Hey guys, Sax is here. Sorry I got here late.
I saw a highlight at 1-1 when Loney went in hard at home. He was called out but I admire the effort. Anyone for a quick recap?
Oh well, we could argue Martin is the soul and heart in this team. Are you able to imagine the Dodgers without Martin?
Gerut had it all deserved.
Hey Sax. I think Bowa sent Loney because Berroa was on deck, but it wasn't close. Otherwise poor Padre defense in the 7th and some timely Dodger hitting (all singles) have given us a comfortable 3-run lead.
It's all true, Karina, about Martin and Gerut.
You are kind of a night owl, no? I think we lost Erin.
No, I'm here. Sorry. Had a few phone calls after I took the dog out for a late night walk.
Valiant slide by Ethier there, but he was out by a lot.
So your dog can stay with you? That's cool. Have you told us what kind? We're dog lovers here. At least Karina and I are.
Loney singles but Maza holds at third, not wanting to become the fourth Dodger thrown out at the plate tonight.
She is an adopted dog, so she's a little bit of a mystery. She's definitely got some chihuahua, and probably some sort of terrier. She weighs five pounds and is all-around adorable. And her name is Jack.
Catching up here...
Karina, don't be harshing on my man Gerut. He's a Stanford boy! Go Cardinal!
Erin, sorry about your outdated iphone but you must be kidding when saying that apple never does this. They do this all the time, releasing new and better technology at lower prices and screwing the early adopters. I could have sworn that they scheduled new ipod releases just after I had bought mine.
Go Dodgers, bases loaded and four hits in the inning but we haven't scored. Watch us hit into an inning-ending dp...
A girl named Jack. I love it!
Apple does release new things often, for sure. I just feel like there is at least some sort of reward for those who have already purchased. I don't know. I buy a lot of Apple stuff, and always have. Maybe I just feel like I've been rewarded because I seem to always have something new lying around.
Definitely a night owl. Bad habit.
Youngsters having a great night tonight.
Thanks for the recap Orel.
Who is Barrett thinking faking the throw to first? With the bases loaded? To try and get Loney?
Let's have a revolution here with Guevara pitching.
Sax's prediction almost comes true, but Kemp beats the throw to first and Martin scores. 6-2 Dodgers.
Correction: 7-2 Dodgers. My kind of correction!
Erin, your reward for being an early adopter is our jealousy at your great new toys.
Karina, nothing wrong with being a night owl!
Gameday's explanation of that play was weird:
"Kemp grounds into a force out, shortstop to second baseman. Maza scores. Martin scores. Loney out at second. Matt Kemp advances to first on missed catch error by first baseman."
Seems sort of funny to say that the batter advances to first. Just a strange way of putting it.
If Kemp hadn't run to first with his head down, might he have made it to second? Alas, it's irrelevant as DeWitt Ks.
Hey Erin, the only way to feel good on Apple screwing us early adopters each round--is to own the stock. AAPL has been very good to me over the last two years.
Cory Wade alert!
I never bought the stock, but I made my dad and a friend buy it a few years ago, and neither has been disappointed.
I need to go to bed, but I have to stay up to make sure nothing goes awry in this game.
Erin, i think Jack is an adorable name.
Sax, the man made me suffer, BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY!. Gotta admit he's a good baseball player.
Wow, that's a lot of ground in right field. Ethier looked like he was amazed at the size of Hairston's head, runnin down that flyball, against the scoreboard.
Hey, Wade? You need three outs to finish the game. Not two.
Thanks, Karina. I like the name Jack, too.
Erin, btw Trevor Ariza is a UCLA Bruin. Go Bruins!
And that does it! As always, it's been a pleasure.
Bye Erin, Sax. Karina, I hope you feel better!
Dodgers win!
If you want to see the first picture of my dog Jack that I ever saw (and a picture of my parents, too), go here:
http://www.beantownwest.com/2007/06/me.php
Russell is doing his post-game interview wearing his weird flapless catcher's helmet.
Erin, Jack is indeed a sweet name for a female dog.
Martin is being interviewed now; he is such a gamer. I hope his agent sacks up and opens up reasonable talks with the Dodgers. Don't be holding us over a barrel, Russell!
well, they should give him whatever he asks!
Poor puppy in that picture! But an interesting writeup and great picture of your folks.
And your STARmeter is up 42%! Whatever that is!
Martin's agent is salivating right about now.
Erin, your parents are a beautiful couple! Jack is such a cutie!
(you wouldn't believe we have a common ground)
Dodgers win! good night everyone!
Go Dodgers. Too bad we can't make up a game one of these days.
#199!
Well, I would have been #200 if I hadn't needed to delete the post to correct a mistake. Here's what it said:
200!
Thanks, everyone. My parents will be happy to know you think they're cute. Jack already has a big ego, so I won't tell her what you think of her.
Fixed! Good night, all!
