Game 79 Thread: June 27 vs. Angels, 7.40p

Chan Ho Park (2-2, 2.83) vs. Joe Saunders (11-3, 3.03).

COMMENTS: Very little positive to say about tonight's game. Saunders is the Angels' ace, leading the team with 11 wins. Park, while performing admirably in any role the Dodgers have requested of him, doesn't look likely to beat the Angels, having lasted fewer than five innings in each of his previous starts. The Angels have a 2-1 record against the Dodgers this year, including Saunders already beating the Dodgers once. Want more gloom and doom? The Dodgers also face Jered Weaver and John Lackey in this series. Enjoy your weekend!

Hi kids, I'll be here tonight, listening to the dulcet tones of Werner Herzog. But I'm seeing WALL*E tomorrow! I can't wait!

Here's the lineup:

Pierre, LF
Kemp, CF
Martin, C
Kent, 2B
Loney, 1B
LaRoche, 3B
Young, RF
Berroa, SS
Park, P

I'll check in when we get back. Go Blue!

Erin said...

Arizona lost in Florida, so if the Dodgers can find a way to pull off a miracle and beat the Angels tonight, they could cut the lead to 2.5 games.

Steve Sax said...

Erin, all tht time in Chi-town is making you crazy in the head. 2.5 game lead? No way. I'll still root for the good guys, but come on. We're playing the first-place Angels, with a competent manager who wouldn't insist on playing a .100 PH.

Go Dodgers!

Erin said...

Sax, that's why I said it would be a "miracle."

It's my birthday weekend (Sunday is the actual day), for god's sake. I'd like to see the Dodgers give me a series win. I have almost no faith, but I'm hoping they'll make it happen.

karina said...

Erin is trying to be optimistic, though the Angels pitching this weekend is gonna be very tough, let's wait and see these bats can pull off something much better than binary.

In the other hand, i still consider Scioscia wearing Angels red as an abomination.

karina said...

See? my adopted son Martin with the HR!

Erin said...

Well, Martin gets it going early. He turned on a fastball and crushed it into the Dodger bullpen.

I can't stick around, because the movie wrapped tonight and we're heading to the party. Figures to be a late night.

karina said...

Kent walks, King James is at bat...

karina said...

have a great time on the party, Erin!

Steve Sax said...

There is something wrong with channel 13's coverage; it says the Dodgers are up 1-0.

Steve Sax said...

Erin, they may indeed be pulling miracles for you. The Dodgers lead 1-0 after 1 frame. At this rate, we'll win 8-0!

Steve Sax said...

Park with another shutout inning. 1-0 after 1.5 innings.

karina said...

I hadn't realized they changed the billboards on Gameday. Love the typography, but they are now "corporate"

Park is looking good tonight.

Eric Karros said...

Hi folks, just stopping by before going to sleep

Eric Karros said...

Did they change the Gameday logo?

karina said...

Nope. They changed the billboard that announces the pitcher's change, strike outs, home runs, etc.

karina said...

Hi Eric!

karina said...

Martin walks.

Eric Karros said...

Hi Karina! I see the Dodgers are up. Call me crazy, but I think they'll win 2 of 3 from the Angels.

karina said...

Vin Scully is narrating how Mike Scioscia met his wife at Dodger Stadium. It's the most tender story i've heard in days.

Eric Karros said...

I didn't know he met his wife at Dodger Stadium.

karina said...

Double steal! (though i do think Pierre was out at 3rd).

I'm with you, Eric. They can win these series.

Eric Karros said...

Anyways Karina wish I could stick around but I'm going to sleep...see you on another Gamethread soon I hope...

karina said...

Vin said "i think i hadn't said this before"

Steve Sax said...

Can't spell Kent without a K

karina said...

Good night! suena con los angelitos, Eric!

karina said...

Work that count, King James!

Eric Karros said...

Thanks - hasta la proxima!

Steve Sax said...

Loney works the walk to load the bases. And Karina goes to bed!

karina said...

awww, failed squeeze play!

Steve Sax said...

and of course, we can't score

karina said...

Not going to bed...not before the game ends, besides i'm doing schoolwork.

Steve Sax said...

Why LaRoche would be bunting is beyond me

Why LaRoche would then run into his own bunt is infuriating

Steve Sax said...

Sorry Karina! My spanish isn't as good as EK's.

Glad to hear that you're staying up with us tonight!

Steve Sax said...

Aha, it's EK that is going to sleep. I guess my English isn't so good, either.

karina said...

I think the bunt is a good strategy, "caribbean baseball".

However, you're so right about LaRoche running into his own bunt, it was numb.

Steve Sax said...

Vlad's dredlocks looks positively creepy.

Park starts him off with an inside pitch that barely misses hitting Vlad, and Vlad doesn't even twitch. Cool. Boy, it would have been nice to have gotten Vlad on the Dodgers...

Steve Sax said...

karina, catch me up here. what are you in school for? what degree are you working towards?

Steve Sax said...

As of now we are 3.0 games off the NL West lead, but 7.5 games out of the wildcard

karina said...

Not as creepy as Manny Ramirez dreadlocks.

Graphic Design. I'm about to finish and it'd be my second college degree.

karina said...

I don't think the wild card is going to be any NL West team. That's why the Dodgers need to win the division.

karina said...

By the way, it's ok you got confused, i didn't use the "ñ".

karina said...

Great bunt by Park.

karina said...

Kemp with a long single!

Steve Sax said...

Karina, how many years left on your degree? And what was the other degree in?

I double majored in college, too.

By the way, CHP is pitching a good game, but if the Dodgers only give him that one run, he's going to lose the game.

karina said...

RISP, no outs. Kent sac fly, Dodgers lead 2-0!

karina said...

I should finish it by next month. I first majored in Communications.

What degrees you have?

karina said...

King Kames with the RBI single!

karina said...

The other day i asked what's be my major in the US. I thought it might be broadcasting. I studied journalism, photography, radio tv and film.

Steve Sax said...

Okay, Aybar gives the Dodgers a gift, and Kent gets a sac fly and King James (now you've got me saying it, karina) with a clean scoring single. 3-0 Dodgers.

Steve Sax said...

Economics and Political Science were my majors.

Aybar gets a double, and the Dodgers give him a gift back when Kent blows the relay, sending Aybar to third!

karina said...

Kendrick struck out. He got totally fooled!

Wow, Sax, that's impressing (your majors)!

karina said...

Each one compliments the other very nicely.

karina said...

I love how my beloved Dodgers are playing tonight.

karina said...

Berroa with the double!

karina said...

Sweeney with his daily K, Berroa at second.

Steve Sax said...

WHY DOES TORRE INSIST ON BATTING SWEENEY??? Karina calls it, Mark Sweeney promptly Ks yet again. Even Rex Hudler had nothing nice to say about him.

Dodgers get another gift when Berroa's hit strikes the third base line for a double. Then, following the Sweeney K, another gift when Pierre Ks but reaches on a passed ball. But Kemp comes up and promptly forces Pierre at second.

Steve Sax said...

Ethier replaces Young in RF.

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers up 3-0 after six frames. Will this lead hold up?

Orel said...

Holy smokes, we're winning!

karina said...

I hope this Falkenbourgh guy let them to preserve the lead. I feel the bullpen is the key of success in these series.

Steve Sax said...

Loney with a nice grab for the third out. Falkenbourg pitches a clean 7th, 3-0 Dodgers.

karina said...

Epale, Orel! that movie you went to see looks glorious

karina said...

You know what? at least Olmedo Saenz made some contact with his bat, besides he gave the team very good at bats.

Steve Sax said...

Hey Orel. Nice job on the new banner photos.

Steve Sax said...

Martin with a leadoff single in the seventh. Cue Blur!

karina said...

son Martin with a single!

karina said...

Go, King James! we need an insurance run!

Steve Sax said...

Kent raps a base hit, and Karina's fave Luis Maza subs in for the crusty curmudgeon.

Steve Sax said...

So Karina, when are you coming to see a game at the Stadium?

karina said...

Sax, i need to find a dictionary after the word you used in your final sentence, of course, after Loney's at bat.

Steve Sax said...

Loney Ks. Man, that was a bad one. 1 out, men on first and second.

At least Loney didn't GIDP!

Orel said...

Karina, the movie had some amazing photography, that's for sure. But it actually wasn't the focus.

Sax, glad you noticed.

Steve Sax said...

...which brings up Andy LaRoche. Try not to run into the path of your own ball this time, Andy!

karina said...

Soon...

Erin said...

A few points before I finally head to the party:

1) I hate Mark Sweeney.

2) If Karina did come to the Stadium for a game, something tells me she wouldn't need to worry about bringing any cash for drinks.

3) I've disliked Werner Herzog ever since he made the guy in "Grizzly Man" seem like some sort of a hero.

4) Please god, let this lead hold up.

And I'm out.

Steve Sax said...

I'm going to have to call it after this inning...LaRoche hits it deep but doesn't advance the runners. 2 out, And here comes Andre.

karina said...

Ethier's up!

Steve Sax said...

erin, I detect a hint of jealousy? Not necessary, drinks are on AC!

Have a good time at the party.

karina said...

Curmudgeon: noun, old fashioned. A bad tempered old person.

You made me to learn a new word, thanks Sax!

Orel said...

ANDRE THE GIANT!

Steve Sax said...

AAAAAAANNDRE!!!

Good idea to sit him for most of this game, Torre!

Steve Sax said...

SIX - ZERO, DODGERS

Wow. Ethier crushed that one. Love it. Love that guy!

karina said...

He shouldn't sit. Period.

karina said...

Ethier should receive more love!

Steve Sax said...

on to the eighth, Dodgers up 6-0.

Karina, will you seriously be up here in LA soon?

Steve Sax said...

They just ran a Jack in the Box commercial with a very out of shape guy trying to buy a fruit smoothie.

I need to do some situps.

karina said...

I'm thinking next Spring, actually. So we could all have some time to prepare.

Orel said...

1) Me too.

2) True; Dodger Stadium accepts credit cards too.

3) I don't know, I thought that guy was an annoying dick without any help from Herzog's narration.

4) Agreed.

karina said...

I do agree, who wants to join me for a Dodger dog?

karina said...

what kind of beer sell on Dodger Stadium?

Steve Sax said...

Karina, if you bust it up here all the way from maracaibo, the least we can do is buy you a Dodger dog.

Give us fair warning so we can start rolling out the red carpet here in LA!

Steve Sax said...

karina: EXPENSIVE beer.

Domestic beer goes for $12 in "large" (16 oz) size. I'm going to post a piece on this, but I'm pretty certain that it's the highest priced beer in all of MLB.

karina said...

I will! i have my fingers crossed i can be there next Spring.

Steve Sax said...

Pardon me--as of 2007, it was the SECOND-most expensive beer price in MLB, at $9 for a small beer. St Louis had it for $9.25.

That makes sense, of course, since it would be hard for St Louis to procure cheap beer, what with Busch Stadium and all.

karina said...

That's pretty expensive beer, it's way much more expensive than buying one at a bar, right?

Steve Sax said...

Okay, I've got to go soon,...

Steve Sax said...

...but before I do...

Steve Sax said...

...let me say 100!

Steve Sax said...

And yes, karina, it is way more expensive than at a bar. I think even in a grocery store, that same 16 oz beer of Bud wouldn't cost you more than $1.

karina said...

The biggest beer company sponsors 7 of the 8 venezuelan winter baseball teams and beer is cheap (though some people complain). In Maracaibo, a can costs around 2,50, that's like 80-90 cents in official exchange.

karina said...

suena con los angelitos, good night!

karina said...

Broxton faced 3 batters. 3 K's.

Orel said...

WTF is Stults doing at bat?

Orel said...

Juan Pierre, showing some late-inning blowout hustle!

karina said...

He certainly hasn't showed Zambrano and Owings kind of talent with a bat. Maybe Torre wants to go home earlier.

Orel said...

Yeah, Dodger Stadium prices are ridiculous. Part of the cost of seeing the game, although they do allow you to bring in one unopened non-alcoholic bottle per person, and your own food.

Orel said...

Nice to see Andre in the field!

karina said...

That's something. It they didn't allow that, it'd be too greedy.

Orel said...

Good confidence booster for Saito here.

karina said...

Is it too wrong if Scioscia's face breaks my heart?

Orel said...

Trust me, they're plenty greedy.

karina said...

Sammy boy putting a show on the mound!

Orel said...

Did Saito just K the side? In any case, game over! Good job, Player of the Game Chan Ho Park!

karina said...

Dodgers WIN! Let's go blue!!!!!!!!!

karina said...

Yes, he did. I feel happy because tonight i got to watch the game and Vin was narrating.

Orel said...

Sadly, Scioscia is one that got away. We can only be happy for him and his success elsewhere.

Good night! Suena con los angelitos!

karina said...

same to you!
