Game 71 Thread: June 18 @ Reds, 4p

Derek Lowe (5-6, 4.03) vs. Aaron Harang (3-9, 4.10).

COMMENTS: MLB.com says we're facing either Harang (one win in his last six starts), or possibly Bronson Arroyo (4-5, 5.31). Either way, we're taking our chances sending Lowe out there on three days' rest after Brad Penny and Hiroki Kuroda wreaked havoc on the rotation with separate injuries. Lowe, perennially a victim of poor run support, has to be on his game since the Dodgers' bats likely won't back him up. On the bright side,

[Hi everybody, Orel here. This is where Sax's Game Thread ended. I'll pick it up from here.]

On the bright side...um...the earth continued rotating on its axis today. Enjoy the game, everybody!

JP scores the unearned run in the 1st! Thank you, Arroyo! 1-0 Dodgers.

Erin said...

I sure like it when I tune in and the Dodgers already have a 2-0 lead.

Steve Sax said...

Hey, thanks Orel for picking up there. I had something on the stove, and then it started burning, and then the fire alarm in the kitchen went off, and then...

...actually, I got sidetracked (obviously). Heck, I didn't even get the Reds' starting pitcher right!

But then, it looks like, neither did the Reds. 2-0 Dodgers...whoops make that 2-1 on an Encarnacion homer.

Anonymous said...

2-1 now on Encarnacion's HR.

Steve Sax said...

I just said that, Orel. You trying to finish ALL of my sentences now?

Steve Sax said...

Shouldn't Loney get an RBI there for that run in the first (WP while Loney was at bat)? I mean, his intimidating presence made Arroyo Seco to his stomach, causing the wild pitch.

Anonymous said...

...the wild pitch?

karina said...

that´s King James.

So Sax, what´s your take on Sarah Jessica Parker?

Erin, feel free to participate...

Erin said...

Anyone watch that diving catch in right? Kinda looked like a trap to me.

karina said...

I think there is no a RBI for Loney, because the runner scored due to the pitcher´s fault.

Erin said...

Oh, in case you wanted to know, I don't like Sex and the City. And I don't think Sarah Jessica Parker is attractive. Sometimes she can look pretty, I guess, but more often than not she has sort of a horse face.

Anonymous said...

Ding ding ding! "Horse face" is today's secret phrase!

karina said...

Interesting. I don´t watch Sex and the City either and i do think SJP is pretty. It seems the guys are kind of familiar with the series and they don´t find her attractive.

Erin, you win a bag of sunflower seeds!

Erin said...

Thanks, Orel! I just ran out a few hours ago.

karina said...

King James HR!

Anonymous said...

LONEY POWER!

Steve Sax said...

Give FJL an RBI for that one, dammit.

He now has two runs scored from/during his at bats.

Erin said...

I'm sure you guys can understand how much I miss my DirecTV Extra Innings package. And how much I hate this damn internet connection in this hotel.

Too bad I'm still at least a month away from watching baseball on a normal TV.

Steve Sax said...

I'm not that into Sarah Jessica Parker, either the looks or the entire package. I have never seen a SATC episode.

Odd offensive inning for the Dodgers:

Martin K
Loney HR
Kemp lines out to 3rd
Ethier K

Not their usual pattern.

Steve Sax said...

Now that I've seen the video of JL's HR, it's interesting that even his home run trot is slow.

Anonymous said...

Erin, I feel your pain.

Anonymous said...

Like, mockingly slow? Or old-man slow?

Anonymous said...

Lowe with 62 pitches through four innings.

Anonymous said...

Bronson Arroyo's hairstyle makes him look like the jack of spades.

Erin said...

I often wonder if Arroyo regrets the white boy braids he was sporting when the Sox won in '04. They were so ridiculous, and now there's probably a picture of him in the Hall of Fame looking like that.

Anonymous said...

The type of person who gets those braids regrets little.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a fortune cookie!

Erin said...

It does, Orel, and it's very true.

karina said...

Can you write that sentence as if Yoda was speaking?

Anonymous said...

DeWitt doubles!

Anonymous said...

"Regrets little, does the type of person who gets those braids."

karina said...

Right, Master.

Anonymous said...

Kent and Martin both K. Don't leave Blake stranded at second!

Anonymous said...

In play, run(s)!

Erin said...

Guess Loney heard you, Orel.

Anonymous said...

WTF? It changed to "in play, out(s)"!

karina said...

King James in a hot streak! RBI double!

Anonymous said...

Got it. Loney doubles for RBI #2, 4-1 Dodgers! Kemp grounded out after him.

Erin said...

So why is Kuo in? Was Lowe's pitch count high?

Anonymous said...

Any particular reason Lowe got yanked after 85 pitches? Don't tell me we have another injured pitcher.

Anonymous said...

DT guys conjecture three days' rest. No mention of injury.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Kuo gives up a single and a double. Guess he's not warmed up.

Anonymous said...

But he K's Dunn! 2 out, still 4-1 Dodgers.

karina said...

That´s it. I think they don´t wanna force am injury to a pitcher, who´s doing his job very well lately.

karina said...

Kuo got out of the jam!

Anonymous said...

Right, Karina. And Kuo gets out of it!

Anonymous said...

Ethier doubles, Berroa walks (!). Time for some Kuo bat-flip action!

Steve Sax said...

Kuo is up. Come on, bat-flip boy!

Erin said...

Well, it's no bat flip, but I guess I'll take a sac bunt.

karina said...

hmmmm, we could use something similar that Pierre did yesterday in the first inning...

Erin said...

God, Deal Or No Deal is a painful show to watch.

Erin said...

Hell, that's even better than the first inning. A triple!

Anonymous said...

Never seen it. I have a low pain tolerance.

Anonymous said...

Holy smokes, Pierre clears the bases!

karina said...

For the sweet love of the Lord! Pierre tripled! i just can´t believe it!

Erin said...

Juan Pierre caught stealing home? What?

Anonymous said...

Ooh, was that a busted squeeze play?

Anonymous said...

I guess Pierre got picked off third and tried to steal home during the rundown.

Anonymous said...

Who is Norris Hopper? EK would like his vowel pattern.

karina said...

I guess Kuo doesn´t like to bore us.

Anonymous said...

Hey, he's not just a baseball player, he's an entertainer.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry this comment comes late...but I think Kuo should flip the bat after sac bunts, too.

6-1 after 7 frames.

Anonymous said...

Gotta run. It's been a good seven innings! Remember, 9:30 a.m. game tomorrow. Hasta Julio Lugo!

Steve Sax said...

Orel, Erin: Rick Monday speculates that it was indeed a busted squeeze. Apparently there were some weird stares in the Dodgers' dugout after the top of the 7th.

karina said...

why?

karina said...

Angel Berroa is hitting worse than Maza and slightly better than Sweeney. How does he look defensively?

karina said...

Speaking of the King of Rome, Sweeney´s at the home plate.

karina said...

and he strikes out.

Steve Sax said...

Sweeney comes in to get his daily strikeout. Glad we're keeping that streak alive, Torre!

karina said...

I´d wish the Dodgers played the Reds way more often.

Steve Sax said...

Rick Monday just said, "Cory Wade is one of those players who has stayed below the radar gun, for those who have not seen him pitch."

Why settle for the idiom "below the radar," when one can add a word and make it "below the radar gun"?

Or why not say, "below the radar gun shot put down time out house party favor"?

karina said...

Great game! Good night, everyone!

Erin said...

I think I might have a decent enough signal to watch the game on MLB.tv tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed. See you tomorrow!
