Game 70 Thread: June 17 @ Reds, 4p

Chad Billingsley (4-7, 3.71) vs. Johnny Cueto (5-6, 5.42).

COMMENTS: Good: The Dodgers have won five of six from the Reds this season. Bad: The Dodgers have lost five straight coming in to today's game. Good: Billingsley is the closest thing we have to an ace; look beyond his W-L record because he's second in the majors with an amazing 9.50 K/9 rate. Bad: The Dodgers have scored one run or less in seven of their 14 games this month.

Although the Dodgers need a series win against the last-place Reds, they have to take the Lakers' approach and play it "one game at a time" (quotes because it's a cliché, but also true). Prediction: If the Dodgers score at least four runs today, they'll win.

Steve Sax said...

If Torre decides to play the "game within the game," however, does that make it two games at a time?

Steve Sax said...

That's Cueto impressive starter that the Reds have today.

QuadSevens said...

I Kemp believe these puns are still flying around.

QuadSevens said...

...or I Kent believe. You get the idea.

Anonymous said...

Who, Johnny?

Anonymous said...

"Juan Pierre, on the first pitch he sees, bounces harmlessly to third base." —Charley Steiner

Steve Sax said...

shhhhh! juan pierre grounds out softly to start the game.

Three up three down for the Dodgers in the first

Steve Sax said...

btw even mlb.com gameday says Juan Pierre is grounding out softly. Even a computer program is bagging on Slappy!

Eric Karros said...

If Torre decides to play the "game within the game," I'd settle for scoring in either one of the two games.

Anonymous said...

Nice to see Russell gun one down!

Anonymous said...

And the Legendary Jay Bruce comes to bat....

Anonymous said...

and strikes out.

Anonymous said...

I highly recommend Firefox 3.0, it flies!

Anonymous said...

Dodgers go down harmlessly in the 2nd.

Anonymous said...

Bills is dealing! K's the side.

karina said...

3 outs, 3 K's. Loving Bills tonight (so far)

epale, guys!

Anonymous said...

Epale, Karin! Hope you started Bills in your fantasy league.

Anonymous said...

Lyons: "I bet you can't say 'summer sizzle sweepstakes' three times in a row."

Steiner: "I won't even try."

Anonymous said...

Berroa walks, Chad moves him to second, and guess who knocks in the RBI? That's right, Juan Pierre! The bottom of the lineup does what the sluggers couldn't!

karina said...

Pierre doubled? running Berroa in? is it twilight zone?

karina said...

Yes, he's starting tonight!

Anonymous said...

GREAT little replay with Lyons narrating how Martin really emphasized to Bills to get his curveball down.

karina said...

Pierre has earned the privilege not to be named "Slappy". Just for tonight

Anonymous said...

KKKKK

Anonymous said...

No "Slappy"? Sax will be crushed!

KKKKKK

karina said...

Dude hit a RBI double! maybe he won't be his usual Slappy tonight, oh well, Sax is allowed to do whatever he pleases, it's his blog!

karina said...

Son, help us to make your case for the All-Star game...

Anonymous said...

Karina's son with an RBI! 2-0 Dodgers!

karina said...

See?, a pretty obedient son!RBI double!

Anonymous said...

Loney with the base knock! Martin was running so fast he slid in order to stop running. Thanks, Bowa, for the late sign.

Anonymous said...

There is a weird haze in front of the CF camera.

karina said...

Orel, maybe Bowa is overwhelmed with the amount of work tonight, too much, too soon.

Anonymous said...

Good one, Karina! Bowa needs to shake the rust off.

Anonymous said...

Lyons just said Kemp is tied with Pierre for most hits with RISP: 21 each. That's kind of disturbing.

Anonymous said...

Kemp K's but Ethier walks to load the bases for Berroa.

Anonymous said...

Ugh! 6-4-3 DP. Still 2-0 Dodgers.

karina said...

It's actually pretty disturbing that Kemp-Pierre stat. But i choose to believe in Kemp.

Anonymous said...

KKKKKKK

Anonymous said...

Billingsley and Kershaw will make a nice 1-2 punch for years to come!

Erin said...

Hello everyone. I just finished some work, and I'm checking in, but I unfortunately cannot stay. I hope the Dodgers can hold this lead while I'm out foraging for food.

Anonymous said...

Aw c'mon, Erin! Stay hungry and watch the game with us!

Erin said...

Orel, under ordinary circumstances, I would cave. But I have not eaten a single thing all day. I'm starting to feel woozy. You don't want me around under those circumstances.

Anonymous said...

OW! Damn, that must have hurt. Pierre tried to bunt and the ball hit his finger.

karina said...

Erin, i've missed you! stay hungry indeed!

Anonymous said...

"You wouldn't like me when I'm...hungry."

Anonymous said...

Dodgers decide they are done scoring. 1-2-3 inning.

Erin said...

As much as I'd like to try, I've learned that a girl cannot live on sunflower seeds (the only thing edible in my hotel room right now) alone. I might be back before the end of the game, but I should definitely be around tomorrow, so don't fret.

Karina, I've missed you, too!

Anonymous said...

I can see how a sunflower seed-only diet could make one hungry.

karina said...

No Bills K's this inning, weird.

Anonymous said...

Chad's rolling along!

Anonymous said...

Chad gets his K's with curveballs, not fastballs. Maybe he felt he needed to change his looks up?

karina said...

enjoy your dinner, then!. Orel and I will be waiting for you.

Eric Karros said...

Hello again. How nice, the Dodgers have doubled their lead since I last was able to checked in.

karina said...

Surely. We don't want major league hitters to adjust quickly.

karina said...

I wonder why anyone isn't broadcasting the Rays-Cubs game.

Eric Karros said...

I see sunflower seeds recently entered the conversation.

Eric Karros said...

Karina how have you been? Long time since I've been on a game thread.

Eric Karros said...

I see Puzzle Yoda was here too.

karina said...

Quite good. Hands full with my internship and my thesis. I was sick last week, but i'm ok now.How have you been?

karina said...

I want to be Quadsevens padawan.

Anonymous said...

Glad to hear you're feeling better, Karina!

Eric Karros said...

I've been pretty good, nothing too exciting.

Excellent padawan reference Karina.

Anonymous said...

Remember guys, we want at least four runs tonight. I don't think the final score will be 2-0.

Unless Bills pitches a CG! KKKKKKKKK

Eric Karros said...

What is the title of your thesis?

Anonymous said...

I saw the trailer for Clone Wars. I liked it!

Anonymous said...

"Why Russell Martin Makes a Good Son"

karina said...

Thanks, Orel!

Eric Karros said...

I agree Orel, we want at least 1 more run

Eric Karros said...

If we score 2 runs then there's no hold situation for Brox. Big picture, folks.

Just kidding, of course.

karina said...

Design of a experimental editorial product for the N-Incidents movement.

karina said...

I've told you, i'm also a star wars geek.

karina said...

That'd make a perfect investigation, Orel. Perfect! shame it's not late to change subjects.

Eric Karros said...

What are you studying again?

Anonymous said...

They just show all nine of Bills' K's and it seems only four of them came on curves. Good pitch selection there.

karina said...

*too

Eric Karros said...

I'm going to get a fudgesicle, I'll be right back

Anonymous said...

"Design of a experimental editorial product for the N-Incidents movement; Or, Why Russell Martin Makes a Good Son"

karina said...

Graphic Design. But i have a degree in Broadcasting (i think that's what my degree is called in the US)

Anonymous said...

Fudgesicle! Don't tell Erin!

Anonymous said...

Broadcasting, as in television broadcasting? We also offer Communications degrees, which cover all media (I believe).

karina said...

Let me tell you, i'm not joking, i'll put on my acknowlegments (among other stuff): thanks to the National League West Division, for keeping me awake 'till late.

karina said...

It's Communication, i guess. I studied journalism, photography, radio, tv and film production.

Eric Karros said...

Speaking of Erin, I guess she left but I skimmed the comments and I think we are on the same diet wavelength.

I gave up ice cream (though as you see I make occasional exceptions), soda, and I recently am on a sunflower seed kick.

karina said...

or it would be called audiovisual media?

Eric Karros said...

I know what you mean Karina about being kept up late - actually though I wimp out as you've probably noticed and am never present on the 7pm ET games.

karina said...

Are you on a diet, Eric? (me too)

karina said...

I've noticed, that's why we don't coincide in most game threads.

karina said...

Sunflower seeds are actually good, they're full of vitamin e and antioxidants.

Anonymous said...

I would call that a Communications degree, Karina. But maybe someone who knows what they're talking about could chime in.

NL West vs. No Doz!

I'm not on a strict diet but I've had to change my eating habits significantly in the past few years. More fiber, fruits & veggies, less sugar and red meat. Sigh.

Eric Karros said...

Are they really good for you?! That'd be awesome. Finally something I'm addicted to that is good for me.

Eric Karros said...

I have recently changed my diet, but only moderately.

Anonymous said...

Lakers getting started....

Anonymous said...

Salted sunflower seeds, EK? Gotta watch the sodium.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I'm being a downer.

Eric Karros said...

Now I never eat at McDonalds more than twice a day.

Eric Karros said...

Yes, they are salted...

Anonymous said...

2 on, 1 out for Chad in the 7th. I hope Torre's getting someone warmed up in the bullpen.

Anonymous said...

I ate McDonald's for the first time in years last week. But only because we had coupons for free chicken sandwiches.

karina said...

Yes, they're very good for you. Orel, that's the way to eat . My diet is no sugar, no fat and no salt (it's supervised by a doctor). I've been eating like that for 3 years. Now i want to be a zero, instead of a four, so i'm working with doctor to achieve it, though she says i couldn't lose more weight.Sigh.

(i want to be a zero due to work requirements)

Anonymous said...

If you could pick one food you could be immune to the effects of, what would you pick?

I'll start. French fries.

Anonymous said...

No sugar, no fat and no salt? I couldn't do that, not in a million years. Everything in moderation.

karina said...

If it was a grilled chicken sandwich, no problem.

Haven't eaten anything McDonalds in 3 years.

Anonymous said...

Work requirements = in front of camera?

Eric Karros said...

I'd go with hamburgers I think, with all the fixin's

Eric Karros said...

Definitely something meat-related. Maybe those Brazilian churrascarias. Does that qualify as a food?

Eric Karros said...

Yeah I'm curious what those work requirements are too Karina

Eric Karros said...

yikes bases loaded

Anonymous said...

Karina, let us know if we're getting too nosy.

Anonymous said...

EK, remember when we went to that churrascaria?

Anonymous said...

Bills leaves with 9 K's. I think that ties his career high.

Anonymous said...

10-10 tie in Boston.

karina said...

I'd love to eat fries, regular ice cream and chocolate every day.

I guess i got used to do it, but i take vitamins and antioxidants. I eat some fat with fish and chicken and i rely on a little peanuts and stuff like that for good fat. There's also olive and canola oil.

Besides my parents suffer from high blood pressure and my dad is pre-diabetic, so i have to watch what i eat. For example, my mom lives a very healthy life and she shouldn't have that high blood pressure.

Anonymous said...

Beimel's rockin' the serious sideburns!

Dodgers trade a run for an out.

Eric Karros said...

Yeah I remember Orel. Yum Yum. I've been to a few others in the past few months. Horrible for your cholesterol but great in so many other ways.

Anonymous said...

It all comes down to eat less and exercise more. No way around it.

Anonymous said...

Beimel gets out of it cheaply enough. 2-1 Dodgers.

Eric Karros said...

Ok, after this fudgesicle I'll never eat another one.

Eric Karros said...

Actually fudgesicles aren't that bad for you in the grand scheme of things. It's okay to eat them every now and then (someone agree, please).

1-run lead heading to 8th.

karina said...

I'm not really interested in being in front of a camera.I've been an extra in several commercials and music videos, but that's not the issue.

Maybe you've heard Venezuela is famous for the beauty queens. That sort of culture permeates the whole society and when you work in the media, it gets you, no matter what. Maybe you're educated, have work experience but you can lose jobs due to your looks, because it's a world dominated by men and they'll give jobs to the skinny girl with the big breasts.

For example, i've worked on a tv show for 3 seasons. I had to take a break in order to finish my other degree. They hired a fashion model and the producer called to tell me i couldn't get back to the show. I asked my former coworkers and they said maybe this girl doesn't work like me but she has a better presence.

Very unfair. But that's how the game is played.

Anonymous said...

Everything in moderation. I think you can eat anything if you don't overindulge.

karina said...

Exercise is primordial.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Karina. That sucks.

I can't pretend that attitude doesn't exist in the U.S. but at least we try to hide it more.

Eric Karros said...

Alas Karina from my limited experience in Venezuela I believe it. It seemed to me the executives hire their secretaries 90% based on their looks.

Anonymous said...

Kent doubles home DeWitt! 3-1 Dodgers! Much-needed insurance! Kent ends up at 3rd!

Anonymous said...

"Exercise is primordial." Primordial as in primitive, or a necessity?

Maybe the deal in the U.S. is that you can get started on your looks, but to really advance you need ability?

Eric Karros said...

I wonder who Wrangler pays more - Brett Favre or Dale Earnhart Jr.

Anonymous said...

Especially behind the camera. It doesn't matter how hot you are, if you can't get the job done, you're fired.

If you're hot and talented? Well....

karina said...

That's true, Eric. Most secretaries are very hot and they seem to pay more attention to their acrylic nails than doing their jobs.

Anonymous said...

Loney hits into his 15th DP.

Steve Sax said...

Hey guys! I'm back and we're winning????

Oh wait, Loney just squelche a rally with a DP.

Anonymous said...

Celtics 22, Lakers 20.

Eric Karros said...

I appreciate a beautiful woman as much as any guy but I also acknowledge how destructive a society's overemphasis on looks can be. In Brazil they have at least 4 separate magazines dedicated to plastic surgery.

Anonymous said...

Welcome to Institutional Sexism Thoughts, Sax!

Anonymous said...

Looks will always be overrated. There's too much money to be made with them.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad SoSG isn't coasting off our insanely good looks.

Eric Karros said...

Even men are sometimes judged on looks - for example I recently grew a Jeff Kent mustache just to be accepted.

karina said...

Hot and talented would be perfect, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Believe me, if a hot girl is working behind the camera, she should be very bad at her job to get fired. It's that shallow.

I gotta be skinny because i don't really look latin. I'm very pale and have small breasts and you couldn't imagine how many times i've got: sweetie, if you tanned more and get a boob job...what do i do? show up with perfect nails, skin and hair so i am not that behind.

Steve Sax said...

Speak for yourself, Orel. I'm still leading on profile lookups..and it's not due to my writing skillz, I assure you.

Eric Karros said...

And don't tease Sax about his botox treatments, he's very sensitive about them.

Steve Sax said...

Kent is 3-for-4 and RAISES his average to .252.

252? Maybe Kent should wear his black costume.

karina said...

People shouldn't be judged on looks. Period.Man or woman.

Steve Sax said...

Jay and Bruce both strike out swinging in the eighth.

Anonymous said...

EK, sweetie, if you tanned more and get a boob job....

karina said...

Don't even get me started on plastic surgery, all my cousins and half of my girlfriends have had them.

Anonymous said...

Sax is killing us all in page views.

karina said...

Orel, exercise is the fountain of youth and health.

karina said...

Eric looks more than fine, just as he is!

Anonymous said...

Then half your girlfriends must be hot!

Anonymous said...

Amen, Karina!

Steve Sax said...

Karina, I've seen your picture, and I don't think it's hurting you much. Or at least, it shouldn't be.

Anonymous said...

Uh oh, Broxton has one on, two out...and Adam Dunn up.

Steve Sax said...

But I should say, it's hard to see the color of your eyes under that blue pointy hat.

karina said...

Sax, we are not calling Pierre "Slappy" tonight. He earned the privilege with that RBI double in the 3rd inning and that catch.

Anonymous said...

Broxton touches 97 mph!

karina said...

Do you think the beard looks good on me?

Steve Sax said...

Thanks for the reminder karina! Hopefully they won't hit the ball to left so I don't have to impugn his defensive "skills" too.

Eric Karros said...

Thank you Karina - that is my real picture

Anonymous said...

I think Broxton is pitching around Dunn.

Eric Karros said...

I always rock the blue shirts against the red background.

karina said...

Thanks, Sax, it's very sweet of you.

and yes, i tend to have very pretty girlfriends, one of the reasons i'm single!

Anonymous said...

Keep the beard, Karina!

Eric Karros said...

I like the beard Karina, but you should do something to bring out your eyes more

karina said...

Eric, you should, it really brings the color of your eyes.

Anonymous said...

One ticket to Venezuela, please!

karina said...

We're "eyes" people!

Anonymous said...

Just kidding, Mrs. Orel!

karina said...

Broxton is making me nervous, what's up with setup and closers this day on the MLB?

Steve Sax said...

Seriously karina, what ever happened to the k + gnome picture?

Eric Karros said...

FYI while I am typing these comments I am working on next Monday's puzzle as I may not be able to on Sunday, my usual night reserved for creating posts.

Anonymous said...

Celtics 29, Lakers 26.

Broxton wiggles out of it!

Eric Karros said...

Yes, the eyes have it!

Anonymous said...

Hot date Sunday night, EK?

karina said...

I know an american guy who bought a one way ticket to Venezuela. Married my friend and lived here 5 years.

Eric Karros said...

Hey Karina, what do you mean that having pretty girlfriends is one of the reasons you're single?

Steve Sax said...

A's have the bases juiced in the top of the first vs. the Snakes

Anonymous said...

What happened after five years?

Steve Sax said...

EK, I also thought you looked good this weekend calling the Sunday game on Fox.

Anonymous said...

I think Karina is modestly saying her pretty girlfriends are stealing away all the men. But I refuse to believe it.

karina said...

hmmm, i felt a little shy with that pic..and i figured out the gnome will bring more luck, it hasn't.

Steve Sax said...

we need to get at least two men on in order for me to see the aptly named juan-for-4

Eric Karros said...

No Sunday I have to go to a work function unfortunately.

Eric Karros said...

Jolbert sounds like an energy drink.

Anonymous said...

Brandon Phillips with the sweet short-hop play. Looks like Saito will be working with a two-run lead.

karina said...

True. My girlfriends steal most men, and guys tend me to treat me like one of them...

Steve Sax said...

karina said...

They moved to the US. Lived there for a couple of years but they're divorcing :(

Steve Sax said...

karina, you should hit them with your cane

Steve Sax said...

*that's another gnome reference btw*

Anonymous said...

Well, you do love baseball. That automatically makes you one of the guys.

Steve Sax said...

here comes maza, karina!

I'm going to the other side. Epale.

karina said...

Maybe they're stupid but i've been very focused on school and work.

karina said...

Dodgers won!

Anonymous said...

Saito: "What the hell am I doing here?"

Steve Sax said...

lakers down by 5 with 8:22 left in the 2nd

Eric Karros said...

Sadly Karina, such stories often end thusly.

Anonymous said...

Can "epale" mean goodbye too?

Steve Sax said...

whoops, down by 9 now

karina said...

Night, Sax.

Yep, it's my love for sports and i'm not precisely the kind of girl who reads cosmopolitan and watch soap operas. Most men are afraid of women who can get a run for their money in sports, books and films.
