Game 58 Thread: June 3 vs. Rockies, 7p

Bradley Penny (5-6, 5.66) vs. Jeff Francis (1-5, 6.12).

COMMENTS: Penny, who lasted only four innings (giving up 5 ER) in his last outing in New York, has the opportunity to get his own record back to even with a win tonight. Similarly beleaguered Jeff Francis has allowed 16 runs in his previous three starts. Expect another offensive bonanza following last night's three-HR fireworks show (Kent, Kemp, Ethier)--and let's hope it's the Dodgers' bats which are again humming tonight.

Trivia! The last time Penny and Francis made sports headlines together was the NBA trade of the Magic's Steve Francis for Penny Hardaway and UCLA's own Trevor Ariza of the Knicks, back in February 2006.

Trivia #2! France's "penny" [get it, "Francis-Penny"?] is called a centime.

So Ethier is on a 9 game hitting streak, hits a homerun and gets 2 RBIs last night and gets benched tonight!? Whats up with that?

Steve Sax said...

No problem, quad7s, we're filling in for Andre's HR power with Hu.

QuadSevens said...

Now I feel better.

Orel said...

Ethier is hitting .163 against lefties this year (although he is .281 lifetime).

Steve Sax said...

Well, Chin-Lung Hu is batting .163 against EVERYBODY.

Steve Sax said...

espn.com says Ethier is .167 against lefties

Orel said...

Why is the L in Chin-lung Hu lower case but the C in Hong-Chih Kuo upper case?

Erin said...

Ooh, Orel, you just got schooled!

Erin said...

My comment was in reference to Ethier's BA against lefties, not the Kuo/Hu capitalization query.

Orel said...

Where is the love from yesterday?

Steve Sax said...

Orel, another funny thing is, Kuo is capitalized, but guo is not.

Kuo figure.

Erin said...

Diamondbacks are losing 4-1 against Milwaukee.

Orel said...

Whoo hoo!

Orel said...

Will Vin tell the Scott "D is silent" Podsednik story tonight?

Orel said...

Penny is rocking the high socks tonight.

Orel said...

...and gets his first K.

Erin said...

Knock wood, MLB.tv is working for me right now. I'll be happy to hear Vin repeat any story he wants, since it's been so long since I've heard him.

Erin said...

Scully just said Smith was a backup quarterback to Eli Manning...at University of Minnesota. But Manning went to Mississippi, so something is wrong in that story.

Orel said...

Foul ball knocks the mask right off Martin's face and he doesn't even flinch. Tough mofo.

Orel said...

If Vin has a weak point, it's confusing similar names.

Alex Cora said...

Martin was masking his pain.

Orel said...

Way to use the curve, Penny! Bradley woofs as he leaves the mound.

Erin said...

I was watching Family Guy on TBS earlier and those on-screen advertisements hit a new low. It was an add for The Bill Engvall Show. Engvall came on the screen, and using a "remote" he actually paused Family Guy right in the middle of a scene to tell us to watch his show later. Unreal.

Steve Sax said...

Are you talking about Scott Posednig?

Orel said...

Pierre with the gapper! Double!

Orel said...

That's a new low, Erin. Blame it on TiVo!

Erin said...

Come on, Dodgers! Let's beat this Canadian!

Alex Cora said...

Happy slappy with a leadoff double.

Orel said...

EK once said he wished Scott Podsednik's first name started with an I so he could be nicknamed iPod.

Stupid Juan Pierre! At least he actually went for the base instead of just running into a fielder.

Erin said...

And promptly gets picked off. You're already in scoring position for a team that struggles to score runs, Juan. Just stay there for a few pitches.

Steve Sax said...

Ha, I knew that leadoff Pierre double was too good to be true. CS, fifth CS of the year.

Orel said...

And Kent with the single. Thanks, Juan.

Alex Cora said...

Hey RBI single for Kent....wait a sec, pierre was picked off...only a single and 2 out.

Orel said...

Silver lining: We are making contact. Something has to fall in.

Erin said...

Another silver lining: Milwaukee 7, Arizona 1

Orel said...

Penny walks his second tonight.

Orel said...

Are you kidding, Erin? Thank goodness for the NL Worst.

Orel said...

If the Dodgers don't make the post-season then I'm rooting for the Cubs.

Steve Sax said...

Hey Erin, I hear you on Bill Engvall. I sort of want to ask Nancy Travis what a cute woman like her is doing with a guy like him. On a show like that, no less.

Erin said...

Absolutely, Orel. After this weekend, I'll be a Cubs fan.

Orel said...

Sweet DP by Hu/Kent!

Erin said...

Sax, I can't believe you mentioned Nancy Travis. I swear to god, every time I see a commercial for that show, I say (or think), "poor Nancy Travis."

And the other day, I was watching something with my girlfriend, the commercial came on, and my girlfriend said, "poor Nancy Travis." I guess we were meant to be.

Orel said...

Call it "King of Queens" syndrome.

Orel said...

"Poor Nancy Travis" could be a blog name. Register it!

Alex Cora said...

WOW the 40 year old still has it! flips the ballfrom the glove while falling down!!

Erin said...

I have always wanted to write a television blog. That would be a pretty good title.

karina said...

Kent showed some glove, it was unexpected...

Orel said...

Epale, Karina!

What shows do you watch, Erin? We like House, 30 Rock and The Office. My wife watches ER and Without a Trace. I watch the Simpsons and Family Guy. Actualy, that pretty much sums up our differences.

Orel said...

Penny is killing worms with all his pitches in the dirt.

Orel said...

And the balk moves the runner to third.

Orel said...

Shallow fly to Juan Pierre...and the runner tests JP's arm. What do you think happened? Hint: 1-0 Rockies.

Erin said...

I watch a ton of TV. I'm sort of a junkie, but I have great taste, so I won't watch just anything.

I'll give you a list of what I was watching this past season (I have it in spreadsheet form), just to be thorough: Aliens In America, Samantha Who, Brothers and Sisters, Chuck, Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Life, Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, Friday Night Lights, Dirty Sexy Money, Scrubs, 30 Rock, The Office, Battlestar Galactica.

Oh, when Amazing Race, Project Runway and Top Chef are on, I watch those. There are others that I'm forgetting, I'm sure, but that's the majority of it.

Orel said...

Like Scott Podsednik, Ryan Spilborghs has excess letterage in his name.

Orel said...

You're right—that is a ton of TV. And it doesn't even include sports.

Erin said...

Yes, thankfully the baseball season falls mostly during the summer, though, so I don't miss out on much by watching baseball every night.

Meanwhile, Penny still sucks.

Erin said...

In case you're not watching the news, Obama secured the delegates to get the nomination, but Clinton isn't officially backing out. Am I the only one who would be happy to see a joint ticket with those two?

We don't have to talk politics here. I was just wondering.

Orel said...

Vin just mentioned Francis' "rosy red cheeks."

Orel said...

You're not the only one. Obama-Clinton is pretty much the Democrats' dream ticket.

Orel said...

Is "Democrat" perjorative? Should I have said "Democratic dream ticket"?

Alex Cora said...

Double steal time???

Erin said...

Democrat is often used as an insult by some people, but I don't ever think of it that way.

Erin said...

Brad Penny has thrown a lot of pitches tonight.

Erin said...

Where did everyone go? All you are on your way to "the other side"?

Alex Cora said...

Hey I'm back, I tried to see if I stopped watching maybe they would score...guess it didn't work...

Erin said...

Since MLB.tv has once again decided to bite the bust (worth every penny, huh?), I'm going to keep Gameday up and read my book (What Is the What, by Dave Eggers. I highly recommend it) while Dodger batters continue to lower their averages against the worst team in baseball.

Alex Cora said...

Hey erin, how is the rest of your chicago stay going? Make it to Fontera grill?

Erin said...

Hey, AC. It's going well. Haven't made it anywhere special yet, but maybe this weekend. My sister is coming to town, and she used to live here, so I'm sure she'll make me buy her dinner at all her favorite places.

Steve Sax said...

Hey, I'm back.

And the Dodgers haven't scored.

Orel said...

Hey, I'm back.

And the Dodgers haven't scored.

Steve Sax said...

Maza with a bad, bad whiff. And here's the Slapster.

Orel said...

Why not PH Ethier instead of Maza?

Steve Sax said...

Slapster swings on a full count and lines out. That ball looked low to me.

Well, here's Kempy, with only four outs left. And he's down 0-2.

Steve Sax said...

FIGHT!

Yorvit is a punk.

Orel said...

What's the verdict? Did Kemp overreact?

Alex Cora said...

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!

Alex Cora said...

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!

Alex Cora said...

Kemp is a big dude, not a guy to fight.

Alex Cora said...

Kemp looked like he overreacted

Orel said...

Just another knock against Kemp, as far as the MSM is concerned.

Steve Sax said...

Well, upon replay it looks like Kemp may have overreacted, even if Yorvit is indeed a punk.

And right before the commercial break, Kemp is shown laughing! Maybe we'd laugh too, Matt, if you'd not strike out on a 0-2 pitch in the dirt!

Alex Cora said...

Nice to see the fight in X-MO.

Steve Sax said...

Ah, Wade? Please don't give up any more home runs.

Orel said...

Both gentlemen ejected. Iannetta solo homer makes it 3-0 Rockies. Game over. Good night.

Steve Sax said...

Well, at least Arizona lost...again. Too bad we won't be making up any ground.

Steve Sax said...

One out left. Here's FJL.

Steve Sax said...

Loney singles with two out. Don't blame him!

Steve Sax said...

Don't blame Delwyn, either. That ball looked totally catchable in the gap, but it falls for a double and for some bizarre reason, Loney hadn't scored from first.

DeWitt at the plate.

Alex Cora said...

Tie it up DeWitt!

Steve Sax said...

DeWitt doesn't get enough, a long foul ball that just stays in play.

Hey, the Dodgers didn't score tonight, off one of the worst teams in the majors! Yay!

Steve Sax said...

We saw our "ace" beaten by a 1-5 pitcher with a 6+ era!

Steve Sax said...

And we even made an error!

Steve Sax said...

I'm done. Day game tomorrow, get your suntan lotion ready!

Alex Cora said...

CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP

Alex Cora said...

Explosive dodger offense gets shut out.

Falling LEAVes said...

someone please tell me it's out on YouTube or something??? love it how Loney and Martin are like the first guys out there

Erin said...

I'm late on this, because I was asleep when it happened. But, in the Kemp/Torrealba fight, Kemp looks like a big punk. Watch it again. He sticks his hip out in an effort to stop Torrealba, then appears to be trying to use his bat to hit the ball on the ground, presumably to make it harder for Torrealba to grab. The kick to the mask seemed accidental, but everything up until that point was pretty bush league from Kemp, if you ask me.

Steve Sax said...

I almost believe you in saying that Kemp purposefully stuck his hip out to impede Yorvit.

However, you and I know better, that Kemp is not a very thoughtful baserunner.
