Derek Lowe (2-5, 4.52) vs. Greg Reynolds (0-2, 5.40).
COMMENTS: Just what the doctor ordered: a three-game series against the league-worst Rockies. Here's the scoop on Reynolds:
Reynolds had all kinds of command issues in his last start in Philadelphia, as he walked eight batters and allowed five hits and six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Three of those walks led to home runs by Chase Utley and Geoff Jenkins in the fifth inning. Reynolds threw 101 pitches, but only 51 for strikes. This will be the fifth career Major League start for the 22-year-old righty, who is searching for his first victory.
Meanwhile, Lowe has been improving in his past few starts. If the Dodgers can't win tonight, then there is no hope for this team.

Great 2 outs and they score...dodgers down 1-0
"Hardly a zephyr to stir the flags in center." --Vin Scully
No worries, though, as Lowe gives up three straight singles with two out in the first. 1-0.
All around town, I'm looking at pictures of some little dude coming out of Eddie Murphy's ear.
Rockies starter Greg Reynolds is. Stanford guy! Whoo hoo!
The Cardinal won the Stanford regional today in the NCAA tourney, and will face UCLA or Cs Fullerton.
Vin said that 44% of the Dodger opponents' runs have come with two out.
As opposed to the 0% that come with three out.
Ethier FCs Kemp home from third; tied up in the first inning.
Yeah!!! Dodgers tie it up 1-1
Hey home cooking rocks!!! Kent with a homer dodgers 2-1
Kent leads the dodgers with a whopping 6th homer!
i feel weird when i see gameday, but change is GOOD.
What's this strange feeling? Oh, it's called a "lead."
a considerable (by Dodgers hitting standards) lead in the first third of the game.
can you say first third?
5-1? Are you kidding?
How did we score the last three runs?
i'm shocked, 2 Dodgers home runs by the third inning.
way to go, Señor Andres!
Hey we are up 5-1 and smoking the ball!!
When was the last time we hit a homer with someone on base?
Derek Lowe. Mental toughness. An unexpected combination.
Karina, "first third" is grammatically correct, if a little confusing. Maybe "first three innings"?
If Loney and Kent can get going we might win some games.
I will be in LA this weekend but probably wont be able to goto a dodger game. My cousin is getting married in Simi Valley
Thanks Orel!
Lowe is on a momentum, hope he feels like it was 2004.
Damon: that's why transistor radios are for!
Damon: Go to the game in your suit!
Damon - I'm thinking a LLLLOOOONNNGGGG bathroom break.
Never thought I'd say this, but I'm flipping back and forth between the Dodgers and...hockey.
Two doubles for Kemp. Still waiting for his fourth HR.
Alex is a sensible man.
Damon, is it gonna be a big party? maybe you could sneak after the toast.
way to swing at a bad pitch Kent
Thank goodness for the Rockies. 6-1 Dodgers.
Hail to King James!
So cool they're playing this song at Dodger Stadium!
Ardoin looks like Jim Edmonds.
Orel, I'll do you one better. I can't watch the Dodgers' game (something seriously wrong with internet connection in this room, so it's hard to watch MLB.tv), so I'm actually watching only the hockey game. I used to be a HUGE Kings' fan when I was a kid, but I haven't watched since then. But the girlfriend's family is from Pittsburgh, so her aunt really cares about the team, so we're watching.
I hope the Dodgers keep up this onslaught.
Dodgers 6-1 on Kemp double and Loney single with an error advancing to second. Great job by loney to work the count back after being down 0-2.
Thanks for playing, Dan.
I watched the Reds-Phillies game earlier and it struck me the fact Edwin Encarnacion has 9 homers, i know he plays half of the time in the Great American Ball Park, but still...
DeWitt and Kent are the Dodgers leaders with the grand amount of 5.
Erin, what made you become a Kings fan as a kid? Why did you stop?
Ardoin swings like Edmonds too - strikeout.
I think kent has 6 homers after tonight...
Right, Alex. My mistake.
That is correct, AC.
Lowe not helping his cause with the error at first.
...which is still sad, since people like encarnacion has more homers. Heck, Jason Werth had more RBI's in one night than Jones. Gosh, I could go on and on.
I lived at Edwards Air Force Base for a few years as a kid, and my soccer coach was a big hockey fan (he was from Buffalo). So he used to take a few of us to some games. I went to about six in the '90-'91 season. Tony Granato (new coach of the Avalanche) once gave me his stick after pregame warmups, and then autographed it when we found him before the next game. We used to go early to get as many autographs as possible. The only major player I didn't get that season was Wayne Gretzky, because the guy was pretty much a douche when it came to autograph signing.
Oh, and I guess I stopped caring about hockey after I left southern California and was never really near another hockey team until I moved to L.A. six years ago. I got way more interested in baseball, and that just stuck.
There you go, Lowe. 6-1 Dodgers after six.
I mean 5 1/2.
That's the first story I've heard with someone losing interest in hockey because they left Southern California. I've been to one Kings game—hockey is much more interesting live.
Definitely more interesting live. I keep trying to convince my girlfriend that we should go to a Kings' game sometime, but she's very much against it. Doesn't like hockey. She's actually asleep next to me while I watch this game, even though she's the one who turned it on and left it on this channel.
Lowe at 85 pitches. Can he go CG tonight?
That's old couple behavior, Erin.
It definitely is, Orel. But we can be forgiven because she's been working at least sixteen-hour days six days a week.
Yikes!
Kemp with that fourth HR, finally!
"In play, run(s)" on Gameday with the first batter of the inning can only mean one thing. Sweet.
There's your home run by Kemp!!! Dodgers 7-1
It seems Kemp heard you, Orel!
Karina and Erin, I just wanted you both to know that I really appreciate you joining our circus here at SoSG Game Threads. Thanks. You guys are great.
Blake DeWitt's OPS against lefties is 1.068. I'll take it.
And it just went up.
Ditto what Sax said.
Well, that's very nice of you fellas to say. I like hanging out here, so the feeling is absolutely mutual.
Of course, I think my blog might be suffering because, believe it or not, I use all my best lines here. But I think I'll take the trade-off.
DeWitt with the veteran play! He stays in the rundown long enough to let Loney score! 8-1 Dodgers!
Erin, I highly recommend recycling good lines. Although you seem to be doing just fine at BW.
Kemp could stand to learn some baserunning from Mr. DeWitt. That kid knows what he's doing out there. Same thing happened in the Mets' game the other night when DeWitt made the turn at second to draw the throw so Martin could score.
Lowe at 95 pitches to start the 8th.
Anyone warming in the 'pen?
Recap of loose threads:
1) Damon, I'm going Friday to the game, so call me if you sack up and go to the game. I owe you a beer (unless of course you're under age). Remember, first pitch is a half hour later than normal (7.40p).
2) I have no interest in hockey, even after seeing my first game this season (Kings, from a luxury box at Staples). But I left when they were up 4-0, so I missed the ensuing fight that of course happened 30 seconds after I left (early).
3) I know Kemp is having a great game and all, and I'm psyched. But could DeWitt teach Kemp some baserunning skills? Seeing Matt get picked off Sunday was yet another embarrassing episode.
4) Why are they not letting Lowe get a CG? Lame.
Steve, it's an honor and a pleasure to share this passion with you guys.
I'm grateful you've been so kind to me.
Will we see Hu get a hit before he gets shipped back down? Stay tuned, as it won't be in this game.
Karina, if there's anyone else to whom I owe a beer, it's definitely you.
When you next come to LA, you'd better give us a week's notice, so we can prepare the city for your arrival.
Man, I am in a SAPPY mood tonight. What has gotten into me?
The Dodgers should ake an 8-1 lead more often.
Either that, or have the Rockies come to town more often.
Hey, it's Mark Sweeney!
A double for Mark Sweeney? We MUST be playing the Rockies.
Tavares had that ball caught. Whoops.
Pierre is up with Sweeney on second. Here comes the two-run HR.
Sax, I was just about to write the exact same thing.
good ole juan for four
Nope, a squib single that fils to advance Sweeney. My mistake!
It's another lovefest at SoSG!
Seriously, though, do we think Pierre will ever hit a homer as a Dodger?
Erin, you've already gotten your beer.
That's okay, I'd buy you another one too.
In before Kemp HR
Man, that Matt Kemp is useless.
Lowe with 110 pitches tonight, BTW.
Orel, I may not have told you this lately, but your Game Threads are poetry.
Sax, with all these sappy (but endearing) comments, I'm beginning to wonder how many beers you've already purchased for yourself this evening.
Erin: I would think so, especially if he stays with us for (ugh) all five years of his contract.
Note I didn't say he would hit it out. I'm thinking inside-the-park.
So Proctor comes in for the ninth and gives up a leadoff single!
The lovefest endeth.
Sax, did you just watch Beaches?
I mean, thank you.
Thanks, Steve!
hmmm, a Mark Sweeney double, something's strange tonight, i hope it lasts 'till October.
The first time I saw Beaches, I watched it right after Steel Magnolias. That was a depressing day.
Vin says Proctor's curveball was 57 mph (!). Compare that to his fastball, which has touched 95 tonight. Nasty.
Admittedly, that K on Stewart was on a wicked curve. Nice pitch, Proctor.
The lovefest is back on!
Arizona lost!
Steel Magnolias: that movie brings tears to my eyes every time i see it, not The English Patient sort of waterfalls-tears, but i always cry when i see it.
Watching those movies together should be illegal.
My favorite term in baseball is probably "defensive indifference." I just like to picture players shrugging and going, "whatever. I don't even care if you take that base."
Steve, you've been very lovable since the weekend.
EK should be taking notes for the Pop Culture Grid.
Orel, it should be illegal. But I didn't know any better when I watched them. I think I was probably ten or twelve years old. I still can't watch either of them without tearing up.
Arizona lost? Excellent.
It is a good term, defensive indifference.
Ball hit to left field, past DeWitt to Slappy. So you see, Helton taking second base on defensive indifference really didn't matter, after all, as he could have scored from first on that arm.
What happens after three overtimes in the NHL? Don't they go to a shootout at some point?
Love to see the kids celebrate! "It's a lot better when you win." —Vin
Proctor finally ends the ninth-inning ordeal. Dodgers win! Outfielders are jumping out of sync! Vinny hopes to get home before 10pm!
Now, to mock the post-game show.
I think so, Erin. Better Google it.
Erin, in the third OT in hockey, I think they take turns trying to outrace the Zamboni.
I'm sorry did the dodgers just...dare I say...win???? Go blue!!!
Did anyone notice that the ice says "Stanley Cup Final", without plural? I thought it was a best-of-seven series.
Shootouts are regular season only. OTs ad nauseam in the playoffs.
Dodgers win! And from what I can tell, there are no shootouts in playoff hockey. They just keep playing 20-minute overtimes until someone scores. Jesus.
It's a four-minuter penalty, eh.
eeks, blood.
It wasn't only a win, they won with a 8-run difference.
We didn't even get to miss Russell Martin.
Wait, Jesus scored?
I noticed that Sax. Maybe it's subliminal on the part of the Red Wings, like, "it ends tonight."
The NHL must have an ink budget.
Penguins win!
And the Penguins win. Great. Now I can sleep. See you tomorrow, guys.
He SCOOOOOOOOORES!!! It'sgoing back to Pittsburgh for a sixth game! Wow, that was exciting. I can't even spell Sergei's last name.
Now back to the Dodgers' post-game show.
I thought Jesus drives the Zamboni. I mean, that's what I would do if I were him.
Good night!
I'm suddenly very sleepy. maybe I'll call it instead. Good night, everybody!
It's orange tie night on the Dodgers post-game show.
Hmm, "what would Jesus drive"? Sounds like an interesting little acronym there. I'm going to go make me some bracelets.
I don't like hockey but the wings suck so I'm happy
from the post-game show:
DEREK LOWE
LA: 8 runs tonight
8 total runs while he was in game in last six starts
Damon, isn't that an oxymoron?
Smoltz blew the save in his first opportunity since 2004.
FSN producer: Quick, kill some time!
announcers: Okay, we'll talk about when the runner should leave third on a squeeze play for the next 20 minutes!
Carlos Zambrano had an RBI triple tonight. Cubbies can't be stopped!
"I don't like wings but the hockey sucks so I'm happy."
Either damon's way or my way, you could use either sentence at Hooters.
Cubbies ARE going to be stopped this weekend. Mark my words.
Not only he had that triple, he did a perfect bunt
Four against the Cubs with another game against Zambrano? I'm going to have another bad feeling this weekend.
I was hoping for a split against the Mets. Didn't get it. I'm hoping for a split against the Cubs this weekend.
There's always hope. Maybe they can play like they played tonight.
Let's face it: It's easy to beat a bad team. The Rockies are a bad team. The Cubs are not.
We should have won 3 of 4 from the Mets.
Well, enough worrying about this weekend. Let's win this series first. Night all!
Maybe 2 of 4.
