Padres' Hold on NL West Lead Just Got More Tenuous

Unbelievably, the Padres have picked up Brett Tomko. Is this their weak attempt to counter our move to pick up David Wells?

The Padres, attempting to fortify their pitching staff for the September stretch drive, have signed right-hander Brett Tomko to serve as a long reliever and possible spot starter.

Tomko, 34, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers when Los Angeles signed left-hander David Wells, who had been released by the Padres.

Tomko was 2-11 with a 5.80 ERA with the Dodgers, but experienced relative success with the Padres in 2002, going 10-10 with a 4.49 ERA.

This gives SoSG no other choice but to run another Julia Schultz photo. Believe me, with this news, and the excuse to run this photo--we're not complaining.

The real question is whether the Padres will let Tomko start, do middle inning mop-up work, or just carry Jake Peavy's luggage.

But as long as he's in the dugout, Julia's in the stands.

Alone.

And needy.
