Game 143 Thread: Sept. 9 @ Giants, 1.05p

Dodgers start Brad Penny, RHP (15-4, 2.82) vs. Matt Cain, RHP (7-14, 3.83).

Dodgers: 75-67 (3rd place NL West, 4.5 GB; 2nd place WC, 2.5 GB; W1)
Giants: 64-78 (5th/last place NL West, 15.5 GB, L1)

Current postseason odds for the Dodgers, from Baseball Prospectus: 29.5%

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Penny delivered a clutch performance against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in his last start. He went seven innings, allowed only one earned run and didn't fall into his tendency to overthrow when he got into trouble. He's still hampered by a strained lower abdominal muscle, but mainly when running, not when pitching.

Giants: Cain's three-game winning streak ended on Labor Day in a 7-4 loss at Colorado. Cain allowed six runs in only 2 2/3 innings, the shortest start of his career. Cain had enjoyed a strong August, posting a 4-1 record and a 2.18 ERA during the month. Cain absorbed the decision in his previous start against the Dodgers, as he surrendered three runs -- two earned -- in five innings in a 9-1 Giants defeat on July 13.

COMMENTS:

20 more games for the Dodgers, and as Kevin Kennedy of FSN said, the Dodgers have to win every series from here on out. Monday is an off-day, so all 74 people in the Dodgers' dugout should be eligible to play today (except for Esteban Loiaza, Derek Lowe, and Chad Billingsley). Now that we've traded ninth-inning heartaches in the opening two games, let's take the rubber match this afternoon.

Furcal sits--Abreu bats leadoff. Nomar plays, but bats eighth.

Kent smopkes opne! Tie game.

See, if one of you guys had gotten on base in the first...

Steve Sax said...

Penny allows the leadoff man to reach again in the second, before shutting the door. 1-1 after 2 full.

The Dodgers are treating Matt Cain like Cy Young.

Eric Karros said...

Matt is showing he Cain shut the Dodgers

Eric Karros said...

Well, the one guy he kent shut down just homered again!

Dodgers up 2-1 top of 7th.

Eric Karros said...

SD and AZ both down 4-2, though Philly won.

Padres and Arizona losing. Can we call this a must-win game?

Eric Karros said...

I don't want to put that kind of pressure on them...

I noticed I can no longer post my "Angels Rule!" comments anonymously

No more anonymous love notes to Saxy?

Is Broxton warming up?

Orel said...

Wow, Penny in the eighth. Vote of confidence for Penny or vote of no-confidence in Broxton?

Orel said...

Uh-oh. Here comes Proctor.

Eric Karros said...

Brox has pitched three consecutive days

Orel said...

Randy Nguyen is up.

Orel said...

How is Broxton faring in the holds race?

Orel said...

Damn, Ethier! Almost a sliding catch in foul territory.

Orel said...

Vin said "pet pooves."

Orel said...

WP sends the runner to third. Sorry Penny, you're not going to get that win today.

Eric Karros said...

There's a crowd of guys a hold or two behind Turnbow...Brox is one of them

Orel said...

Proctor K's Winn! Now it's Beimel vs. Bonds.

Eric Karros said...

Proctor got the Winn, Penny'll get the win.

Orel said...

Broxton needs to hold on for one more day.

Orel said...

IBB to BB.

Orel said...

Bonds just patted Loney on the butt.

Orel said...

Here comes Broxton! Chess match between Grady and Bochy.

Eric Karros said...

Orel, did I just hear a Wilson-Phillips reference?

Orel said...

You hear what you want to hear.

Orel said...

fuck.

Orel said...

Broxton definitely regressing to the mean, giving-up-homers-wise.

Steve Sax said...

Broxton SUCKS!!!

Orel said...

That was a horrible pitch by Broxton.

Eric Karros said...

Ughh!!!!

Orel said...

Worse, he fails to earn another hold.

Eric Karros said...

Broxton, you don't deserve a holds title.

Eric Karros said...

I didn't see the pitch, but Ray Durham apparently did.

Eric Karros said...

That just makes me want to turn around and say goodbye

Orel said...

Wow, that was a HUGE catch of Loney's fly ball.

Eric Karros said...

Will every game involving the NL West end in a 4-2 score?

Orel said...

S.O.S....

Eric Karros said...

Rockies beat Padres 4-2, Cards beating Dbacks 4-2, Giants beating Dodgers 4-2.

Orel said...

Ethier singles, and this is all we can ask for: the tying run at the plate. Unfortunately, it's Nomar.

Eric Karros said...

If today were April 2nd I'd be really creeped out.

Orel said...

All Hennessey has to do is keep hitting that outside corner and Nomar's toast.

Orel said...

Wow, dropping a series to a last-place team. Feels like the magic is all gone.

Eric Karros said...

At least SD lost too.
