Game 139 Thread: Sept. 5 @ Cubs, 5.05p

Dodgers start Eric Stults, LHP (1-2, 4.23) vs. Ted Lilly, LHP (13-7, 3.89).

Dodgers: 73-65 (3rd place NL West, 3.0 GB; 2nd place WC, 3.0 GB; W3)
Cubs: 70-67 (1st place NL Central, 0.5 GA, L2)

Current postseason odds for the Dodgers, from Baseball Prospectus: 33.3%

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Stults draws the start in place of David Wells, who is serving a seven-game suspension. Stults has three starts this year, two of them against the Mets, with a win, a loss and a no-decision. His ERA as a starter is a half run lower than as a reliever and it's a role he appears more comfortable in, no surprise because he's been a starter throughout his Minor League career.

Cubs: Lilly was doomed by a 38-pitch first inning against Milwaukee in his last start. He lasted five innings and gave up three runs on five hits and four walks. The lefty did not get a decision as the Cubs rallied for a win. He now has given up a home run in each of his last seven starts, a total of 10.

COMMENTS:

Wild-Card update, as of 2.02p: Philadelphia was coasting with a 8-2 lead going into the eighth inning, only to see Atlanta bat around in the bottom of the eighth (10 batters yielded four runs). With the score 8-6, and two quick outs to lead off the bottom of the ninth, Philly's Brett Myers gave up a single, single, walk, and then a bases-clearing double to Matt Diaz to win the game for the Braves. Dodgers take a half-game lead over the Phillies entering tonight's game with the Cubs. Unbelievable! Now is the time to get it done, Dodgers--let's go, Stults!

Why do I have a bad feeling about this game, in light of the Phillies' meltdown earlier this afternoon?

Eric Karros said...

That should give you a good feeling

Pierre stranded at third in the first inning.

Soriano has swung at 19 of 24 pitches in this series. He reaches when Shea f's up the throw.

Cubs hit into their ninth DP of the series, here in the first.

EK--and yet a bad feeling persists. Must be the jalapeno nachos from lunch.

Cubs' favorite movie: You, Me, and DP

Hillenbrand looked molassaic trying to steal 2nd

Stults with a double!

Dodgers down 3-0 after 3. Sax, those jalapeno nachos are looking prophetic

Once again it's Juan Pierre Bobblehands Day at the stadium. He fumbles Soto's single into basically a double.

Eric Karros said...

Stults 2-for-2, hitting 0.400 on the season.

Steve Sax said...

EK, I'm back. Can you use "molassaic" in another sentence for me?

Pads and Snakes tied at 2 in the second.

Olmedo in, man on, with a fireballer on the mound. Does saenz have anything left? (I guess not)

Steve Sax said...

Pie, in the face! Saenz single turns into a double. Hu to pinch run at second, Furcal up with the Dodgers 1-for-6 with RISP

Steve Sax said...

1-for-7. Raffy fould out on a 3-1 count.

Eric Karros said...

Still down 4-2. I'll watch one more half inning.

Eric Karros said...

Sax, the word 'molassaic' should never be used more than once per day.

Dodgers go down 1-2-3. Goodnight!
