After Receiving Hall Pass, Dodgers Considering Tufts of Hairstons

MLB Trade Rumors also noticed that gaping abyss in left field for the Dodgers, and they said the Hairston brothers (Scott and Jerry Jr.) are potential considerations, along with Marcus Thames.

The Dodgers have now turned their attention to three other left field candidates according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, making contact with Marcus Thames and the brothers Hairston: Scott and Jerry Jr.

Thames, 34 in March, hit .288/.350/.491 in 237 plate appearances for the Yankees in 2010, his best offensive season since 2006. He's a disaster defensively, with a -27.4 UZR/150 in left over the last three seasons. Jerry, the older of the two brothers, played primarily shortstop for the Padres last year, hitting .244/.299/.353 in 476 plate appearances. He dealt with a stress fracture in his tibia at the end of the season. His brother hit .210/.295/.346 in 336 plate appearances for San Diego while battling hamstring issues.

Both Thames and Scott excel at punishing left-handers, with .264/.333/.505 and .278/.331/.498 career batting lines against southpaws, respectively. That would be useful in a division that features lefties Barry Zito, Jonathan Sanchez, Joe Saunders, and Clayton Richard, among others.

A "disaster defensively" in left field wouldn't be all that foreign to the Dodgers after the last two years. But adding yet another punchless player to this lineup could be damning.

I'd prefer Thames, but so long as it's not Jerry I'm good.

As long as it's not Podsednik, I'll be mostly mollified. However, one thing that I haven't read in any of all of this stuff is the fact that does anybody think Ethier and Kemp will have another shite year in '11? Because, honestly, if Kemp and Ethier both have another shite year, it won't matter if Babe Ruth showed up to play for the Dodgers, they'll still be playing for peanuts.

"Mostly Mollified" sounds like a sitcom.

I've mentioned this guy several times before on here but have not had any real feedback. If the mlb trade rumors free agent list is correct Austin Kearns is on the market. He will cost less than 1M and can hit in the .260-.270 range with a .350 OBP and perhaps 10-15 HRs.

@orel - shiiiit, I'm pitching Universal TV this afternoon! If I see you in the room before me, let's just say, there's a reason I roll around with a machete.

"Mostly mollified" is, sadly, the most we can hope for these days.

There's always Adrian Beltre, to buoy our mollification-level spirits

Austin Kearns is off the market. Signed with Cleveland today.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Sax - How would Beltre laughing at us as he gets his $20 million check from Arte Moreno help things?

MSTI makes an interesting analysis for a trade with the Nationals for Mike Morse. Seems to have plenty of upside at a low cost (potentially), especially with him being odd man out because of winter moves. Much better option than Pods and Hairstons.

Why oh why does this team keep breaking my heart??

I'm strangely reminded of the scene in The Jerk where Steve Martin is a carny and he is explaining that contestants can win anything they choose on the shelf full of crap.

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax

It's a PROFIT thing!

Neeebs said...

@Sax:

Not unlike the shelf that we had last year in LF, eh?

I blame Ned for these disasters. In fact, I now dub him the "Master of Disaster".

I hear Manny is still on the market. He's on the shelf between the kewpie dolls and the glasses with the fake nose and mustache.

Oh, profits, eh??
I love The Jerk. The first starring role for Garden Grove HS fellow alumnus, and the first movie to feature a character named "Iron Balls McGinty."

rbnlaw said...

And I hate to say it Mr. C, but "Go Toffies!!"

Orel said...

Break a leg, GregNoPhoto!

rbnlaw said...

Tim Cahill for the Toffies!!
Beat the Citizens!

rbnlaw said...

City's other striker misses from close range. Ha!

rbnlaw said...

City's defense is non-existent at the moment. I like it.

Wicks said...

Damn it Ned you are really screwing this up. Has anyone signed Brad Hawpe yet? He would be better than the stiffs we are looking at.

Wicks said...

Oh and thanks to Everton for keeping the top 5 in the EPL compacted so far. The frozen pitches this weekend really pained me being I have a football addiction.

rbnlaw said...

City playing without heart, eh Wicks?

rbnlaw said...

Well, except for Tevez and Silva. How'd Silva get left off the XI for Spain?

Wicks said...

City is heartless they are all about the $$$$.....what happened to Zabaleta? He's got quite the gash!

rbnlaw said...

Didn't see it, but no card was issued. The subsequent goal by Baines was in his area, but a thing of beauty.

rbnlaw said...

Horrible challenge by Anchibee. 2nd yellow and red deserved. Bad news for the Toffies; good for Mr. C?

Wicks said...

Crap two yellow cards this could get interesting. That was a horrible horrible late attemp at a tackle.

rbnlaw said...

Did you say Hawpe is still available? I heckled the shit out of him in 2009 at Anaheim Stadium. Only reason I was there was to see a friend throw out the first pitch. . .and bug the shit out of Hawpe.

Than was fun.

This fucking rain is relentless. Going to gym anyway.

Mike Morse makes a ton of sense. Therefore, it unfortunately will not happen.
