Game 72 Thread: June 19 @ Reds, 9.30a

Eric Stults (2008 debut) vs. Aaron Harang (3-9, 4.10).

COMMENTS: You want a harang(ue)? How about mlb.com getting its story straight so it's clear who the damn starting pitcher is before game time? The Dodgers also welcome back Eric Stults to the team after he went 1-0 in 2006 and 1-4 in 2007, with a career ERA of 5.75. I was fortunate to have met Eric during last year's cup of coffee, and he's a nice guy (and indeed did kick ass during The Transporter, Crank, and Lock Stock). Let's hope Stults opens a can of whupass on the Reds today and we get a much-needed sweep.

no, Sax, we're all the best!

*sigh* Oakland couldn't win...

Steve Sax said...

Well, AZ wins to keep us in place. This weekend, we face Cleveland (6 under .500, like us) they face the Twins (1 over .500, like them).

Steve Sax said...

Hey karina, you and I are the only ones lurking around here this late. Let's go get some coffee and a dessert.

karina said...

Excellent idea! i'm feeling like procastinating big time!

Eric Karros said...

C'mon guys, keep it going. Only 195 comments 'til 400!

karina said...

Sax, i'll only have no sugar very expresso coffee, do you mind?

Orel said...

I'll have the double chocolate fudge cake. Enough healthy eatin' for me.

karina said...

How would you like your coffee, Orel?

Orel said...

Hot! (I've been playing Grand Theft Auto IV.)

Eric Karros said...

I'll take a coffee with half-and-half and Splenda, please!

Steve Sax said...

karina, I'll join you with an espresso. Make it double.

karina said...

So, i went to the other side very early last night, what do you want for dessert?

karina said...

and a ton of comments missing for 400 ;)

Orel said...

Aren't we on to breakfast now? Actually coffee still applies.

karina said...

I think coffee, dessert and tea (and mimosas) apply for every hour of the day and the night.

Orel said...

In other words, it's always Happy Hour!

Eric Karros said...

Anyone have any interesting plans this weekend?

QuadSevens said...

Heading to Las Vegas for the weekend. Going to check out the World Series of Poker. (As if that was any suprise from my name). And hopefully coming home with some extra money.

Orel said...

Break a leg, Q7! Don't forget to drop some dough on the Boys in Blue!

karina said...

hmmm, tomorrow i'll see some people from school (i haven't seen most of them in a long long time), they wanna celebrate our 10th aniversary of the high school graduation, on an ice cream parlor. I'll have to drag my friends, since they weren't the most popular kids back then.
Afterwards, my friends (the ones whom have been my friends since 5th grade) and i will go somewhere else to have "a few drinks".
Of course, everything after tomorrow's game, which will be televised.

karina said...

ehhh, i don't know to say to quadsevens, but i guess it's something like "good wishes"

Eric Karros said...

The thread that wouldn't die!

Quad: I don't get it, what does the name 'Puzzle Yoda' have to do with Poker? Ha ha...but speaking of puzzles, rest up this weekend cuz I'm quite happy with the one I've put together for Monday. I still wonder though if it's too easy or too hard.

And Karina: have fun! One of my favorite ice cream places was in the Las Mercedes neighborhood of Caracas (don't remember the name).

karina said...

Eric, you were the one who asked for 400!
You mean the 4D ice cream parlor?

Eric Karros said...

Yes, it was 4D! You know it? Do they have one in Maracaibo?

Only 175 more until 400!

karina said...

It's a franchise. We have two: one in a food court at Sambil (we do have one, too) and another at Baralt Av.

I'm going to the Av. Baralt one. Maybe they have some splenda-yougourt ice cream.

what was your favorite flavor there?

Eric Karros said...

I don't remember my favorite flavor (I'm sure chocolate was an ingredient), but I used to hang out at Sambil (the one in Caracas) all the time. I didn't know there was one in Maracaibo too!

Orel said...

What's up with Coldstone? $5 a scoop???

Eric Karros said...

Yeah tell me about it. I sometimes pay less for a meal at a restaurant than I would for for ice cream at Coldstone. Then again, Coldstone's portions are overly generous and more filling than most meals. Bigger portions -> bigger people. It's the American way!

karina said...

There are Sambil malls in Caracas, Maracaibo, Valencia, Pampatar and San Cristobal.

There's a floor with a baseball theme in Sambil Valencia.

Orel said...

#231!

karina said...

Are we spoiling Eric?

karina said...

Our Jedi Puzzle master...

Orel said...

Leave it to the dedicated Karina to resurrect this thread!

Eric Karros said...

We have a long way to go to 400. But then again, it took 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. Using that as a guide, I figure about 10-12 years to get to 400 comments.

karina said...

I've just noticed, one of you had this thread highlighted (i guess it's only to spoil Eric).

I've been thinking to change avatars for the new Dodgers winning streak on the last half of the season.

How about i start posting avatars here and you help me to decide?

Of course, after i figure out Sax's puzzle.

karina said...

this is my "son-nephew", how about that?

karina said...

someone showing some hardware because she had to work very hard to get it...

karina said...

gnome, again...

Eric Karros said...

Thank you Karina for indulging my quest for 400.

Who is that showing the hardware?

karina said...

It's me showing my graduation ring. I don't know how it is in the United States, but here, there is a sort of pre-graduation ceremony, they give you a medal, and if you want to, you get to wear a ring. The first time i graduated i didn't want a ring and we even didn't have that ceremony (it was another university, after all).
This time, after i finished all my courses, i only have to finish my thesis (now, it's in September, the faculty had a problem with a teacher) , so they organized this ceremony and i went, because they won't have another ceremony like that this year.
I guess what i want to say is, it could be a sort of lucky charm since it's hardware obtained by an effort, sort of analogy when people win the World Series, they give them a ring, right?

Steve Sax said...

I just realized this thread is still in play (sort of like the All-Star Game). Amazing.

Nice ring, karina!

Steve Sax said...

Hey EK, shouldn't we be chasing 400 using the Gts from Game 20 or Game 27 (both of which stand at 322 comments as of now)?

Eric Karros said...

Hey congratulations, Karina! Well deserved ring and good luck on the thesis. Did the medal ceremony look anything like this?

Eric Karros said...

Yup Sax, this thread still in play. 400 comments is still far away, but much like Karina's graduation, nothing worth achieving comes easily or quickly.

Eric Karros said...

And Sax, we chose this thread because it sort of organically took on a life of its own after the game ended. It may have some catching up to do compared to some of the other GT's, but it can be done. I mean, at age 36 Bonds was almost 100 HRs behind Aaron's pace. Uh, never mind, scratch that.

Karina, regarding the avatar decision: I say you try each for a 5 game span, and whichever one produces the most wins during those 5 games wins. As you can see I am very scientific...

karina said...

Eric, that medal thing wasn't like the one at the end of A New Hope (i wouldn't mind if Princess Leia had put the medal on my chest). It was held on the small auditorium of the faculty, with our families, teachers, classmates and friends, so there was a lot of crying involved (my dad cried a LOT, specially when i put him my 2 medals)

karina said...

I'd take that your suggestion, as always it's a great idea. Which one do i use first?

Orel said...

Karina's got a nice "ring" to it!

Orel said...

I promised i could find some proof of the venezuelan baseball cheerleaders, here they are, the tiburones cheerleaders:

http://tinyurl.com/6efukl

Eric Karros said...

Spectacular link!

karina said...

There is another one. These girls are dancers sponsored by pepsi. This video is hilarious because of the reaction of the players. I'd bet my life if the Major Leagues had something like it, players wouldn't be allowed to such behavior (i don't blame them, beautiful girls who can dance very well).
If you see it real close, you might see former Dodgers Steve Schmoll and late Geremi Gonzalez clowning around.

http://tinyurl.com/64zbq9

karina said...

Eric, is this link safe for work?

Eric Karros said...

As long as your computer screen isn't in the sightline of any HR personnel!

Eric Karros said...

And if it is, well, that's just not right.

Great link!

karina said...

A la orden siempre, Eric!. I owe Sax some pics of the tabloids and sports newspapers, you know to discuss the journalistic values of such editorials, but it won't happen soon.

Orel said...

Hot stuff! I started throwing dollar bills at my screen.

karina said...

Glad you like it, Orel. Hmmm, throwing bills, i've got memories of that...

karina said...

Changing avatar, let's see if coper's picture works magic...

Eric Karros said...

What is coper's record?

Orel said...

I think he has a winning record. That's just Coper being Coper.

karina said...

Coper's record: sweep against the Nats, rubber match with the Giants, yesterday's loss against Dbacks.

In that spaniel, Dodgers have had great pitching, minor miracles like Jones and Sweeney RBIs, lots of runs have been scored with two outs, so i really think Coper's staying. What do you think?

Orel, i love the "Coper being Coper", it's catchy (and very appropiate)!

Orel said...

I agree!

Eric Karros said...

Stay, Coper, stay! Good dog.

karina said...

Do you plan to attend World Baseball Classic games at Dodger Stadium?

Orel said...

Still early to tell, Karina, but if we're around and tickets are available I don't see why not.

karina said...

Would you go to Spring Training?

Steve Sax said...

Okay, so EK has urged me back to this thread, so here I am. Wow, 268 comments and still going strong.

I see I've missed some impressive cheerleader videos, as well as the origin of Coper.

Does he live in a Coper Cabana?

karina said...

Hahahahahaha, Steve. Sadly, he doesn't live in a Coper Cabana, but he's a very spoiled prince...this is Coper's house and we all surrender to his wishes...

karina said...

I've missed Eric on today's threads.

karina said...

Steve, i can't believe you hadn't see those videos, i worked hard to get'em (just to revive the thread and living up to the promise i could find them)

karina said...

another edit: hadn't seen

Orel said...

For the record, I did the "Coper Cabana" thing weeks ago (last comment).

QuadSevens said...

Here's my new avatar everyone. It's not me in any Dodgers atire, but you can see the Dodgers wallpaper in the background.

Time to go play some GH3.

Orel said...

Every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man!

QuadSevens said...

And I just finished playing some ZZ Top on Guitar Hero. =)

Steve Sax said...

Orel, sorry for repeating the Coper-Cabana joke.

I didn't mean to Coper a feel there.

Steve Sax said...

Quad, now take off your fake beard before you go to sleep.

Eric Karros said...

We've hit the 40% mark!

Eric Karros said...

Meaning, 40% of comments in this GT have come after the game actually ended (112 of 280).

By comparison, Shrek 2 made only 19% of its US box office take after the 1st month.

QuadSevens said...

Happy Friday all.

Going back to those excellent videos Karina posted, here's some more baseball cheerleaders I stumbled upon today.

http://tinyurl.com/5mv9fk

karina said...

Indeed, Orel: Every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man!. Looking good, Quad.

I think you could rock Manny's dreads, just saying...

QuadSevens said...

Thanks Karina.

I'll be at Dodgers Stadium monday. I will definitely check out the dreads.

karina said...

I hope your'e the lucky charm Dodgers need to beat the Phillies today, Quad.

Changing avatar, after 2-walk offs courtesy of the hated Giants, maybe Coper should rest a little bit, this time is a pic of me at the Luis Aparicio, with a very special person (no Dodgers gear, unfortunately) .

Let's see how it goes, however if you feel like Coper should come back, he will.

Orel said...

1-0 with the new avatar....

Eric Karros said...

Is that now 4-0 with the new avatar?

karina said...

It is and a sweep to the powerful Phillies offense. Fabi's magic, that girl is so special.

karina said...

You changed avatar yourself, Eric. Binary cat is very cute, why didn't you choose the rabbit?

I gotta say i'm gonna miss the green eyes.

Orel said...

5-0!

Eric Karros said...

I think Kimbo Slice has green eyes. BTW Karina, great work with the latest avatar!

Eric Karros said...

Ok, back to basics avatar-wise. And to answer your question Karina: the Bear beat the Rabbit in the Octagon fair and square.

Orel said...

Once EK figured out his avatar had no effect on the Dodgers' fortunes, he was free to improvise endlessly.

Eric Karros said...

Yes - with great power comes great responsibility. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about either.

Not so with you, Karina.

Eric Karros said...

Actually, I guess my previous avatar was a cat, not a bear. Still kicked Rabbit's butt in the Octagon though. Look for the clip on YouTube coming soon.

karina said...

I will look forward to that YouTube clip.

karina said...

New avatar=6-1 and three walkoffs, for Christ's sake.

I think all the power belongs to Fabiola, not me. I just put an avatar.

karina said...

Quoting Dumbledore:

"It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited ton power are those who have never sought it".

Your green eyes are back, Eric!

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, rabbits.

I had a couple of rabbits Eric, you've touched a very sensitive side of my heart.

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

karina said...

Down with the man, let's fight censorship:

http://tinyurl.com/6eyhoo

I found this link of a Rabbit-Cat Fight, to paraphrase you, it's not suitable for the faint of the heart, easily frightened, human resources personnel and children under 17 years old. It's GRAPHIC!

Orel said...

You've touched a very sensitive side of Karina's heart, EK. Hope you don't give her an acute myocardial infarction.

Orel said...

That video was a little disturbing, Karina.

karina said...

I beg your pardon, Orel. Are you sure you will be able to sleep well tonight?

karina said...

My heart (or whatever left of it) won't suffer any acute myocardial infarction. Eric, don't worry.

Orel said...

As long as I sleep on my back.

Erin said...

That video was awful. I'm sorry my curiosity got the better of me.

And the cat.

karina said...

Actually, in my 5-minute research at YouTube, most rabbits did that to cats, even i saw a more disturbing image i won't bother to explain.

It is surprising, my rabbits never did that sort of thing. They were very well-mannered ladies.

Pardon me, ladies and gents.

Eric Karros said...

That was indeed disturbing. And curiosity wasn't the only thing that got the better of the cat.

Orel said...

Which comes first: this thread reaches 400 or Dodgers are knocked out of the division race?

Nostradamus said...

Hey - I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I prefer that you find out as it happens.

Steve Sax said...

Nostry, baby! Who wins the next puzzle competition?

karina said...

Or, who's gonna be the great champion of PCS?

karina said...

An avatar change is needed: proof of my meeting with Jesus Flores...

karina said...

or i bring the gnome back?

Eric Karros said...

Methinks it's time to change to the gnome or something else

karina said...

done! but if you have any better ideas than the gnome, they will be welcome very much!

p.s: looooooove Woody.

Eric Karros said...

I think that's a smart move to go back to the original avatar. As they say, stick with what you gnome!

Nostradamus said...

It was a wise choice indeed.

karina said...

Eric, sometimes if better to explore another options. However, if Nostradamus says it was a wise choice, what do i gnome?

Eric Karros said...

Don't look now Karina, but Nostradamus actually knew what he was talking about!

karina said...

Eric, do you think it is possible to arrange an appointment with Nostradamus, i think my heart could use some of his insight.

Eric Karros said...

I'll try. Nostry generally doesn't take appointments (ironically he never knows what he's gonna be up to even a day in advance), but I'll see if I can catch him in a good mood.

Eric Karros said...

All I'll say is, Nostry walks the walk. Since he advised your avatar switch Karina, Dodgers have gone 9-1.

Steve Sax said...

Way to go with the avatar change, karina

karina said...

Hey, it looks like when i went back to the avatar gnome, i made the wisest choice of all summer.

However, Neeebs has the magic gloves, i also have a lucky outfit: a Dodgers t-shirt that says: what's not to love? with the LA logo and big sweatpants. Both garments are dirty but i will watch/read every Dodger game 'till season ends and into the playoffs, wearing the same outfit, no matter if they get even dirtier and smelly. Not a true fashionista look, but my beloved Dodgers deserve every effort.

karina said...

But i'll have to credit Nostradamus for his advice. Thank you, Nostry!

Orel said...

Sounds like your next avatar, Karina!

karina said...

Question is: will Nostradamus allow me to use his image for my next avatar?

karina said...

Orel, you asked what will be first, this thread getting to 400 or the Dodgers being knocked down from the division race.

Now, the question is who's going to be faster: the Dodgers winning the magic 3 or we reaching 400...

Steve Sax said...

I hope the Dodgers can come up with three more wins, before we come up with 67...er, 66..more comments (particularly at our recent pace)...

Steve Sax said...

GO DODGERS!

BEAT THE CUBBIES!

Orel said...

T-minus 30 minutes!

karina said...

T- minus 20 minutes.

Are you nervous as i am?

Orel said...

Not after a 2-0 series lead!

karina said...

The closest we get, the more nervous i get and the prospect of missing the game makes me feel so bad...

Steve Sax said...

Wow, I am already getting nervous about the NLCS. This is nuts, man.

karina said...

I feel the same way, Steve. Is it right to feel this way about a playoff game?

Steve Sax said...

It may be wrong, karina. But it feels so right.

Well, losing Game 1 of the NLCS was a bummer, but if we can gain a split today that will help a lot. And even if we don't earn a split, I don't think we're in dire straits.

karina said...

I feel like this has been the best season as a Dodger fan of my life. It's best when i think there's enough potential to state that this was just a sample size.

Are we abandoning this thread?

Orel said...

Hu?

karina said...

who what?

karina said...

I need to expiate my sin:

Last night, while opening game at Maracaibo, rained copiously, so my fellow season ticket holder kindly offered his cap so my makeup wouldn't ruin. Problem? it was a Giants cap, which i wore for 4 innings. I didn't want to wear it, but he insisted and i just had to give in. Absolutely embarrassing, a photographer, friend of mine, took pictures...

However, i left at the 7th (it was past 1 am). Is that LA cliche enough?

Tonight, i'm wearing full Dodgers gear. I feel dirty (Aguilas team colors are orange and black)

karina said...

By the way, check the email...

karina said...

#350!

Orel said...

Sing ten Take Me Out to the Ballgames, child, and ye shall be forgiven.

QuadSevens said...

Almost to 400 posts. I know nobody is watching the World Series, but how about the Bud Selig special: a tie and rain delay!

Steve Sax said...

I am not a fan of Bud Selig.

Orel said...

But he speaks so highly of you.

karina said...

Orel, i sang Take me Out to the Ballgame and that little mix to say goodbye to opposing pitchers and i'll be doing that daily this week.

I'm not a fan of Bud Selig, either. I hate the way he handled the steroids problem, the World Baseball Classic and how he ignored the fact that baseball was eliminated as an olympic sport for a couple of votes (really). He purposely wants to spread baseball around the world as soccer is, but the option is NOT sending and dividing major league clubs to the other side of the globe and interrupting the very much necessary spring training.

p.s: sorry if i got carried away a little bit...

Eric Karros said...

The journey to 400 is proving to be long and laborious. But it will make the achievement that much sweeter when attained.

karina said...

what are we going to do when the thread reaches 400?

Eric Karros said...

I'll come up with something, Karina...

karina said...

why don't you ask Nostradamus?

karina said...

Guys, happy Thanksgiving!

this is my first Thanksgiving ever..

Orel said...

Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy!

Steve Sax said...

I ate too much this Thanksgiving.

Eric Karros said...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Steve Sax said...

First comment under the new layout! Happy holidays, everyone!

Eric Karros said...

Happy Holidays. I think the lack of a 'recent comments' widget is more harmful to this thread than anything.

Steve Sax said...

Agreed. I'll put in a request with the SoSG IT department to put "Recent Comments" back up on the sidebar.

They're swamped, though, so don't hold your breath.

Orel said...

"Recent Comments" is back!

Loney Fan said...

Good call, recent comments was missed.

Eric Karros said...

Welcome back, Recent Comments! Kudos to the IT folks on the 4th floor.

Steve Sax said...

What the heck happened to Karina, btw? She's been strangely quiet...

Eric Karros said...

I was wondering the same thing Sax.

Karina, where are you? SoSG misses you!

Eric Karros said...

Which will reach 400 first: Game 72 comments (372) or Andruw Jones career HR's (371)?

Both seem to be stalled after a great start...

Steve Sax said...

...but only one will be pulling down ~$20M over the next five years (sorry, Andruw!)

QuadSevens said...

Has this post been abandoned? It's so close to 400...

Eric Karros said...

Without our fearless leader Karina, this thread is dying. Has anyone seen her lately?

Loney Fan said...

I think we need to push this thread to 399. If you comment she will come.

Eric Karros said...

Hey good idea LF - we should bring it up to 399 and save the last comment for her return.

Easier said than done.

Loney Fan said...

Well, we are not that far off. I'm sure some of the regulars will see this in the recent comments section and jump in to help out.

QuadSevens said...

Sounds like a great idea to me. But will everyone be able to contain themselves and not post the elusive comment #400?

Eric Karros said...

Good point Quad...but we have the power to delete any #400 comments made by an unapproved party...

QuadSevens said...

Supreme Blogging Power is nice. Someone will have to email Karina and let her know that post #400 is waiting for her.

Steve Sax said...

Q7, there are downsides to Supreme Blogging Power. The chick magnet feature grows tiresome sometimes, for example.

Orel said...

Which explains why Karina has disappeared.

Steve Sax said...

...and we're stuck at 383 comments.

Steve Sax said...

Whoops, make that 384.

Doh!

QuadSevens said...

Chick magnet power, nice!

What happened to the sidebar on the main page of the blog? I'm not seeing it at all.

Eric Karros said...

We're at 386. Speaking of which, this thread is going slower than an Intel chip from the late 80's...

karina said...

I'm back, guys!, what's this thread if i don't ask your opinion about my avatar?

However, after seeing the beautiful blondes on the main page, i should get another one more suitable for the male crew who inhabits this site.

p.s: i adored Thanksgiving! (glad you all had a great time too)

again, i've missed you guys a lot!

Orel said...

Now you're talking!

karina said...

:)

can i ask what does it mean"top commenters" in the side bar?

Orel said...

It just means we're keeping track of who's making the most comments. The number next to your name is how many comments you've made recently. Right now you're #4!

karina said...

Yay!

who's in the mood to get into 400 as in today?

Quad, i'm after you.

Eric Karros said...

The balance and symmetry of the number 393 instills within me a peaceful feeling.

Eric Karros said...

Fifteen years ago, Tony Gwynn batted 394.

Eric Karros said...

If you're driving from Lone Pine, CA to Valley Falls, Oregon, your best bet is probably Route 395.

karina said...

it's also this:

and this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/396

Eric, i hope you have a plan for #400

karina said...

Thinking in the puzzle, i just realized 393 and 396 reminded me of this:

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.

The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.

It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.

Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.

3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
Multiply backwards from three times ten:

Three time ten is (30), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one is three of course.

Now take the pattern once more:
Three! . . .3-6-9
Twelve! . . .12-15-18
Twenty-one!. . .21-24-27. . .30

Now multiply from 10 backwards:
Three time ten is (30 - Keep going), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one...
What is it?!
Three!
Yeah, That's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby.
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family.
That's a magic number.

karina said...

which leaded me to this song:

One, two, three Marlenas
There's got to be someone we can trust
Out here among us
One, two, three Marlenas
It's see no, speak no, hear no evil about us
The three Marlenas

3 to 400! your turn...

Eric Karros said...

Wow. Here we are on the threshold of greatness, the brink of history.

Ok Karina, comment #400 is all yours. You can make us wait a minute or make us wait a year. I leave destiny in your hands.
