Game 157 Thread: Sept. 24 @ Giants, 7p

Hyun-Jin Ryu (13-7, 3.03) vs. Matt Cain (8-9, 4.06).

With the Giants playing meaningless baseball for weeks now, all they can hope to see this evening is the potential for Matt Cain to claw back to a .500 W-L record, and the joy of seeing former closer Brian Wilson in enemy colors. According to MLB.com, the Giants have scored only five runs in their last 40 innings, and have scored two runs or fewer in four straight games.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers have more important, October-play issues to consider: whether making up the two-game deficits against BOTH the Braves and Cardinals is worth the effort (technically, the Dodgers have a 1.5-game deficit against the Cards, who have only five to play), and whether Ryu can get back to form (Ryu is 0-2 in September and has lost four of his last five starts).

Beating the Giants is always fun, don't get me wrong. But having Ryu deal a Greinke-like outing on this turn would be just fine. Take it easy*, boys.

Note (*): Not to be confused with the other Eagles song, "Take It To The Limit", which has the entirely contrarian view

Brought Fernando Koufax, seats look half empty, #BandWagon

Fred's Brim said...

nice work, PoD!
Have any Gnats fans given him his first sneer or dirty look?

Cliff Beefpile said...

Finally, a good line-up.

Fred's Brim said...

holy shit, walk-off 2R homer from Jason Giambi, Indians keep it going, 5-4 win over Chicago

Fred's Brim said...

looks cold there

Hanley rung up on a pitch inside

Crawpappy steals second

Fred's Brim said...

I suppose it's good to be playing in chilly weather with the playoffs coming up

Fred's Brim said...

AG grounds to second to end the inning

Fred's Brim said...

Waka Flocka almost had a no-hitter for St Louis, just a tough grounder and a poorish throw with 2 outs in the 9th

Fred's Brim said...

But St Louis still wins. Atl won as well so no chance to pick up any games tonight

Fred's Brim said...

And Pence didn't hit a homer. minor miracles

Fred's Brim said...

Nice first inning for HJ for a change. He gives up a single, but it was a well-placed grounder

Fred's Brim said...

hehe Vin telling stories about Brian Wilson lookalikes in SF

and avoiding the hippies

Steve Sax said...

Easier than avoiding the SF yuppies

Fred's Brim said...

nice inning, HJ!

Long day at the office, Vinny!

@FB

Are we supposed to keep pitching tonight, or what?

Hideo Nomo said...

So now there's a chance we'd open the NLDS in Atlanta? Not sure how I feel about that.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Here comes the big inning.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Better Atlanta than St. Louis.

Hideo Nomo said...

We got trounced in ATL. Granted, that was prior to the resurgence, but...

Cliff Beefpile said...

Way to make me look bad, Dodgers. Stupids.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Kershaw and Greinke against a line-up that strikes out as much as they do...I'll take it. St. Louis has a history of playing over their heads in the postseason, Atlanta does not. Their starting pitching is kind of meh, and no Tim Hudson. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take Atlanta every time. Factor in a blase fan base and I like our chances better. Plus St. Louis probably remembers 2009 LDS and wants revenge.

Hideo Nomo said...

That didn't look like a strike on Gameday.

Fred's Brim said...

yeesh, that was the same pitch that AJ walked on

Hideo Nomo said...

The only time Atlanta fans aren't blasé is when they're trying to convince you Freddie Freeman is better than Puig.

Fred's Brim said...

@Dusty we are definitely supposed to keep pitching

Fred's Brim said...

OK I need some bed
Gnite all
please stay healthy
and beat the Gnats

Cliff Beefpile said...

CRUSHED! Fuck you, Cain.

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Yasiel with a Puigaso!

BJ Killeen said...

One is good, four would be better! Can't wait till we go on Sunday!! Also get to say goodbye to Helton...lots of talent there.

Dusty Baker said...

I think I'd take ATL instead of St L. All St L does is hit. Even their LHWGs are good hitters. As much as I hate them, I'm more scared of them.

Dusty Baker said...

Really? Tony fuckin Abreu?

Dusty Baker said...

Buh-bye ball!

Sweet swing, Matty. Let's see more of that. Birthday HR.

BJ Killeen said...

Happy birthday Mattie!

Paul said...

Boom!

Dusty Baker said...

Dammit, missed that 45.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Uribe has completely redeemed himself in my eyes.

Steve Sax said...

6 innings, 1-run ball over 87 pitches for Ryu. Not a bad evening.

Dusty Baker said...

And a nice single just now.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Ryu seems to have righted the ship. Et tu, Nolasco?

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Fucking Ryu!

Cliff Beefpile said...

Oy.

Steve Sax said...

@Cliff 8:50p: The Uribe defensive play in the bottom of the sixth was indeed pretty sweet. Highlight available on mlb.com

Steve Sax said...

Ryu with a leadoff single! That's good!

Ryu picked off first from Oyster Pubes! That's bad!

Steve Sax said...

Okay kids, going to go get in a workout. Hold this lead.

Dusty Baker said...

What is this strange "workout" you speak of?

Steve Sax said...

It's what's keeping me from beer #2 for the evening

Steve Sax said...

104 pitches through seven. Let's give Ryu a rest now, shouldn't we?

Steve Sax said...

Oh shit, that workout I've gotta do.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm on my second rep of curls.

Hideo Nomo said...

I'm on my second rip of cheese curls.

Hideo Nomo said...

Actually, what am I saying? I did work out tonight!

Cliff Beefpile said...

Poser with the weak throw. Hahahahaha!

Cliff Beefpile said...

Swing at strikes, MEllis

Steve Sax said...

Dammit, now I'm still stuck here commenting. This workout will have to wait until after the game.

Steve Sax said...

And here's Wilson!

Steve Sax said...

1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks for Wilson.

I've gotta say, pretty impressive.

Hideo Nomo said...

I enjoyed that immensely.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Between Sandoval and Machi is there ANY food left from the post-game meal?

Cliff Beefpile said...

Speaking of immense...

Steve Sax said...

Horrible call on Puig, ump! he was safe!

Cliff Beefpile said...

C'mon, KJ.

Steve Sax said...

Oyster Pubes, one-out single to right

Steve Sax said...

this is not good. tying run advances on a WP.

kenley fans Pence, however.

Cliff Beefpile said...

Siddown, Underpence!

Steve Sax said...

Cliff Beefpile said...
