Clayton Kershaw (13-8, 1.72 ERA) vs. Chad Bettis (0-3, 4.80 ERA)
Food for thought: If Chad Billingsley and Jerome Bettis ever had a love child, the kid would have the biggest thighs of all time.
This game time snuck up on us here at SoSG World Headquarters. Sax and I saw each other at Dodger Stadium like ten minutes ago or so, right? Weird.
Today the Dodgers take on the Rockies for a three-game set, fresh off their sweep of the Pod Rays yesterday. The elimination number for the Dbags is now 16, and the Dodgers have a healthy 11.5 game lead on them. I'm guessing that with that lead and with the expanded roster, we'll start to see some crazy lineups made to get the regulars some rest. Which also may lead to bad baseball. And likely to some poorly-constructed Game Threads here. In fact, we're resting Stubbs for the stretch run, too; we need him for the playoffs.

Michael Young is in the clubhouse today, but obviously not in the lineup.
Hanley is back from his day off.
That's a lot of consecutive Es in the lineup.
Takes me back to Jose Offerman days.
One would think that Neeebs would favor this lineup!
We've got our A Team out there today while Rockies are missing Tulo, CarGo, and Helton.
cc: Karina
The Rockies should just start calling Helton "Helto" to go with all their other big bats
Arenado and Pacheco already have it covered. Don't know how that work with Cuddyer, though.
Ha! A play on Jerome Bettis is exactly what I was going to do with this GT, if I wasn't too drunk to post it.
Drunk minds think alike!
I Bettis as good as Dusty's GT, however
Speaking of crazy lineups, now is the time to trot out Michael Young and Edinson Volquez and Dee Gordon, etc.
If Dee attempts another lead off bunt, however, he should be sent to another team immediately.
The sad part is that Dee can bunt farther than he can hit the ball.
No pre-game bc of the KCAL effect. Makes me surly.
howdy, yall!
gotta keep pitching
@Dusty: YOU? Surly?
Happy Labor Day all!
It is hot and muggy and sticky here today. Plus...No Vinny.
I may be feeling a bit surly myself before long.
On the sofa, Vi---...
God dammit.
Yeah Dusty...No Vin. Sometimes when we don't have Vinny it hardly feels like Dodger baseball.
Well, I am surly, first because I'm on a plane flying to Detroit...second, because MLB TV can't tell where I am, it won't let me watch, and right now I'm somewhere over the Rockies stadium. I can listen however. And make lots of comments until my computer battery dies!
Hang in here as long as you can, BJ!
First pitch about 35 feet outside.
Thanks D!
Puiggie!
Pitching coach already in to talk to The Bus.
Geez
balls
Puig may not be the best base runner yet, but it's somewhat of a stretch to say he didn't do enough not to interfere with the defender trying to make a play. Rocky threw himself into Puig, the replay seemed to show.
Feed is dying..what's going on?
Feed is dying..what's going on?
fix your mic, Collins
Killing me. Gonna try on my ipad. sometimes it's better.
attaboy, Hanley
The best way to fix Collins' mic is to turn it off.
@BJ
HanRam drew walk. Bases juiced with Dre up. One out.
Everyone's safe! 1-0 Dodgers and still Rancho Ardiendo.
cc: Karina
nice, i'll take it!
what the fuck? did I see a guy with a Dodger ventriloquist puppet near home plate, maybe behind the Dodger batting circle?
@BJ...Dodgers score CC on very strange Rox defensive screw up. Bases still loaded.
@Fred
There is a guy with a very young girl behind home plate. She's dressed in all Dodger gear.
Little bitch is clutching a Dinger doll.
If we don't get more than one run out of this inning, I'm going to move my surly factor from 5.5 to 7.
ugh
I can't believe we got only 1 run out of all that craziness.
I see her, it's possible that's her and my eyes are still drunk from last night. But I think there was somebody around towards the first base side. If they put the camera to show a Dodger who is on deck, the puppet would be in the front row
Surly factor seven it is. In the intervening time, Mrs Dusty is trying to talk to me about some bs homeowner's association crap and pissing me off. Now I'm up to 8.
45
I think the real puppet is the 1B who made that terrible, errant throw.
leadoff walk
i am sure Dusty's surl is approaching the red
figure it out, Clayton!
that was about 55 feet
Kid K not pitching Kershaw like.
i hate Coors
coulda gone to first with that
Dusty has exploded
Well this one went tits up quickly.
Cmon, Clayton, sort it out
I predict several innings out of Volquez today
Maybe im happy I can't watch.
@Dusty definitely - can't locate the fastball for some reason
At least AZ is behind
It's not like the long ball/Coors Field effect...this is all small ball.
Purple-headed monsters must have swapped out the humidored balls for the bottom of the inning
Nice little dustup going on between Howard Cole, Chard Moriyama, and MSTI via the twitters.
Can Michael Young pitch?
is it childish and annoying?
@FB
Oh yeah.I think it started with this Cole article:
http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2013/09/dodgers_michael_young_ned_coll.php
Clay gets a hit to attempt to begin to perhaps redeem himself somewhat.
attaboy, Clayton
26-pitch first inning for Clayton. Criminy.
we've got small balls too!
@Sax it was worse than that
@Dusty I could see how that could ruffle some sensitive feathers
if we didn't have bad luck...
Dammit
Yeah I see it that way too, FB.
Although I do appreciate Cole taking on the naysaying, every deal that Colletti does is terrible type mentality. I long since detached from that.
get the ball down, Clayton
I'm getting really nervous about Clay.
what
the
hell
Feels like we're back in May.
finish this off, Clayton
That inning made me thirsty. Sam Okt, here I come.
damn I thought that was trouble
Oktober, I like the confidence
Out of the 2nd without a run scoring. Clay's righting our ship.
*Says a small prayer.
That was very cool of that guy to give the ball back to the woman with the ample bum.
I know, I'm being bitchy. I'm sorry lady with the big fat ass. It's not your fault my team is playing like shit.
good job, Dre
hehe well said, karen
nice hustle, MEllis
the Rockies can never complain about a bad call after that awful call at first when Helton was 5 feet off first
attaboy Albert Julius!
take it easy, Juan, for chrissakes
This is like watching little league ball.
fuck, that stunk
this game is so annoying
AJ was caught watching MEllis instead of continuing to run
Am I the only one whose blood pressure is shooting thru the top of her head? Have we been spoiled (yes) or are the Dodgers playing really, really shitty baseball? (yes)
At this rate we will have to wait till T9 to win. And I'm ok with that cuz I should be able to watch by then! :-)
owwwww
So far BJ, it's probably better for your health not to see.
what a weird game
Yes, we're spoiled and yes, this game is annoying.
nice recovery, Clayton
My blood pressure is considerably higher than during the pre-game. Need to develop some perspective, but it's hard to do so when my whole day revolves around the game.
Good job, Kid
Per Ken Gurnick:
"Don Mattingly said Edinson Volquez soon will be inserted into the Dodgers' rotation as a sixth starter, and although the manager wouldn't announce when until he informs the other five starters, it could be as soon as Wednesday."
@karen: judging by Dusty's comments, I have to agree with you!
Lets go Crawdaddy
OK Puigster!! It's all about you here!
Bettis hits Puig. 1st and 3rd with two outs.
Opened up the Disney Infinity starter pack.
I have NO IDEA what the hell is going on here.
Ouch Puig
Arggh
A Gon swung at a terrible ball. Out of the inning. Even if we win 176-3 today, it's still gonna feel like a loss.
Sax, I'm not letting the kid know that game exists yet. If he asks for it, I'll say, "Sure, but that's your college fund."
Fuck, Clay, make an adjustment. This is several starts in a row that you haven't had your stuff.
Clay wiggles out of that mess.
@Gnomes: so far, it's no skylanders.
Keep talking about your career as a player, Lyons. I just love it when you do.
URIBE! 3-3
Uribe ties the game! HOORAY!!
i feel like crap. i needs greasy food, strong booze and a Dodgers win.
i show up and we tie. you're welcome.
@dusty: ROFL. how did he ever get this job????
thanks, Spank and Juan
KERSHAW! 2 RBI for Kid K and he's back in the lead. 5-3
Attaboy, Clayton!
Spank luck!
Bottom of the fifth, Dodgers up 5-3. I meant 5th inning. Spanking is actually finishing off a fifth of Johnny Walker.
I'm hoping you've got the rally thong on, Spanky :)
fuck, there is nothing easy today, is there?
Keep it going dodgers. Gotta power down soon. dbags lost!
cripes
Well shit, that didn't last long.
dammit
stupid game
I thought we were supposed to be keeping pitching.
nice hustle, Y!
@Dusty we gotta
nice work, AG
is Puig hurt? please don't be hurt
ow, went over the base with his knee
Dodgers re-take the lead 6-5 on a sac fly from HanRam.
#NoLeadIsSafe
nice work, fellas
I'm already this surly and I haven't even seen Dinger yet.
Dre Day, bitches!!!
Dre pumps it outta there!!
DRE!!!!
League up in the pen
#NoLeadIsSafe #EspeciallyWithLeague
Dre-bomb.
8-5 Clay. Now it's time for you to take charge MVP.
wow, nice throw
dang yo. reading the last half hour of comments made me queasy. and no, it wasn't the greasy KFC.
yeehaw!
extra biscuits, please
uhoh bullpen time
i hope he's not hurt
farking ship
Fuck you League! You can't get ANYONE out. DFA this asshole.
dammit Puig better not be hurt too
League is about to get lit up Yosemite styles.
get that shit down, Brandon!
Kid and Puig out. League in.
This can not be good.
I don't think Clay is hurt. He's had a tough day (of only 81 pitches), has a lead, should be saved for when it really counts (playoffs), Dbags already lost today, etc.
Puig knocked his knee as FB referenced, but it looked like a knock as opposed to a twist, so probably just a bruise situation.
attaboy, Brandon! way to get out of that mess
Magic number down to 15.
League made it out of the inning without giving up a run? i'm confused.
Good good good. Good vibrations.
Well shit. That replay of Puig making it back to first made it look like the knee issue happened then, and in a shittier way. Please baseball gods, be kind to us. We;ve been through a lot.
hmm maybe it was more of a tweak after all. It didn't look like much but you never know
quiet inning
Tattoo Platoon alert.
ugh Double-Zero isn't even a number
keep those pitches down
Dustettes fast asleep. I'm not going to wake them up so I don't have to hear about Dinger when he shows up.
this is the first time I am seeing Wilson pitch for us. How has his fastball been, in general?
great job, Brian
Landed. Happy score. Damn people are Pavlov dogs. On an active taxiway. A bell rings and they all jump up. They can see we are not at the gate. Idiots.
Sonofabitch. I'm starting to like Brian Wilson.
*bangs*
*head*
*on*
*keyboard*
has Jeff Francis always been a pain in our ass or does it just seem that way?
@FB
I haven't really tracked BW's individual pitches, but have been watching him overall. While I don't think he still has any of that old holy shit virtually unhittable stuff, I've been impressed by his outings. He definitely knows how he wants to approach each batter, has been keeping a lot low and away, has growing confidence, seems cool in pressure situations (has gotten out of a few jams), etc. He's been a great bullpen extender thus far.
god only knows if i will ever like Brian Wilson.
Was that an intentional Beach Boys reference, Spanky?
rough day for Hanley
thanks, Dusty - that works for me. In this outing, it looked like he was hitting the low 90s when he needed to come in with a fastball and was high 80s with those slidery things that were tailing off the plate
Cmon, Belli, keep it down and keep it clean
cripes
@FB re Wilson
He also seems to have a maturity/experience level to use pitch selection and placement to get guys out (and to get guys to ground out especially), where he may have dropped off velocity or movement.
I feel like Belli is reverting to his May ways again
damnation
i guess it's just 2 stinky outings in a row for him, one of them in Colorado, but still
My nerves are feeling very woozy.
The sponsor of Belli's Baseball Reference page says this: "Noriega's face. 80's Robin William's nose. Kevin Brown's sinker."
My nerves are feeling very boozy.
UJTDMFers
Collins pet peeve:
When he tells us it could be a double play.
Just call the fucking play, and if it's a 6-4-3 double play, then just tell us that. Don't tell us before the play unfolds that there is an opportunity for the double play.
I'm through now.
I think we'll need about 47 geicos to get out of this game alive
nice urine
When does Helton come in to pinch hit for a 16-run HR?
@ DB
re: Beach Boy reference.
Damn skippy
that was weird
