Game 146 Thread: Sept 10 @ Padres, 7p

Derek Lowe (12-11, 3.53) vs. Shawn Estes (2-1, 2.97).

COMMENTS: A sinkerball pitcher on the mound at Coors Field is like a balloon-animal clown at a two-year-old's birthday party: he may look like he's having fun when he first gets to the backyard, but it won't be long before he's gonna get mugged. With that, the Dodgers move Derek Lowe up one day in the rotation to see if Lowe can reprise his last effort (8 beautiful innings of 2-hit ball with 4 Ks vs. the Snakes), against Estes, a former Giant. The Dodgers' position of 3 games ahead of Arizona (as of 4p, thanks to the AZ @ SF game) is the apex for the entire 2008 season, giving us a 86.5% chance of winning the West (and that was prior to the SF comeback victory this afternoon). Keep on rolling, Blue!

Shawn Estes. Now there's a name I've not heard in a long, long time.

Just wanted to say thanks again for the wristbands. They arrived yesterday. I'll try to get a couple pictures to you guys soon.

Alex Cora said...

Watched the Angels clinch against the Yankees (with the ranger's help). All LA WS?????

The power of the wrist bands.

Unleash the power.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Does this mean that I have to retire the Magic Gloves?

Should I hold a ceremony?

Steve Sax said...

I think the magic gloves and wristbands need to meet someplace and have headband offspring.

Steve Sax said...

Lineup, from Tony Jackson

C, Martin
RF, Ethier
LF, Ramirez
3B, Blake
1B, Loney
CF, Kemp
2B, DeWitt
SS, Berroa
P, Lowe

Alex Cora said...

Uh, Blake cleanup???? Huh?

Steve Sax said...

Casey is gonna rake tonight.

Steve Sax said...

Jason Repko on the pregame show, but Rick Monday wants to talk only about (a) how injury-prone Repko is; and (b) what Monday's approach to injuries was, when Monday played.

Yawn.

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers' magic number is 15 entering play tonight.

Steve Sax said...

Boy I wish I could have made tonight's game in SD.

Orel said...

"Casey is gonna rake tonight." You mean he has yardwork? Why couldn't he have done it during the day?

Steve Sax said...

As amazing as AZ started out this season, it is equally amazing how they have faded, ceding the division to us. What happened???

Orel said...

Hey, it ain't over yet.

Orel said...

Ethier lines out. Andre, you're useless!

Alex Cora said...

Uh I don't have a good feeling about this. Giles doubles, and moves to third on a ground out. Only 1 out.

Alex Cora said...

Before the seats are warm.

Alex Cora said...

Opps, already down by 1

Alex Cora said...

Oh man another LAME phiten commercial, this time with Joba Chamberlin. Uggg.

karina said...

King James HR!

karina said...

Kemp walks (he took a lot of pitches by the way), DeWitt doubles. Dodgers 2-1

karina said...

Lowe walks! Martin up!

karina said...

Son delivers! Martin RBI single! Dodgers 3-Padres 1

karina said...

Ethier ended the inning with a grounder. Maybe he wants us to let him leave.

Orel said...

Did James just make an error there?

Orel said...

Not a good inning for James.

karina said...

He could be forgiven...he hit a home run!

I bet Erin is anxious about the Sox-Rays game. 11 innings, still tied to one.

Orel said...

Go Rays! (Nothing personal, Erin.)

Eric Karros said...

I hope Blake does rake tonight, cuz if he leaves runners on base I'm gonna be pissed.

Eric Karros said...

That pun inspired by Karina's earlier comment.

Eric Karros said...

Anyways I'm hitting the hay. But excellent balloon animal clown metaphor, Sax. Best I've seen in several weeks.

Good night!

"And a drive to center, and forget about it boys, that's outta town!" —Vin

5-1 Dodgers!

Orel said...

Night, EK!

Orel said...

Loney's HR = 395 ft.
Manny's HR = 435 ft.

karina said...

Ethier singles, Manny HR, Blake singles...

Manny took care Blake didn't leave runners on base.

Dodgers 5- Padres 1

Eric Karros said...

Before I go to sleep I want to note that the use of the words 'balloon animal clown metaphor' in my previous comment features four consecutive nouns, three of which are used as adverbs or adjectives. Yeah, baby.

I guess this post could be considered the 'balloon animal clown metaphor game thread.'

karina said...

Oh, good ol' King James GIDP. It's OK, King.

Orel said...

TB 1, BOS 1, mid 13

karina said...

I'm honored to be part of your inspiration, Eric. But i don't know which earlier comment i made could have inspired you.

Maybe it was Sax's?

Que descanses.

Orel said...

Or BACMGT.

karina said...

BACMGT?

Orel said...

Go Rays! Pena 3 run HR! (Sorry Erin)

karina said...

Hopefully, Angels and Dodgers will make the playoffs. And Mike Scioscia deserves all the praise he could get.

karina said...

What happened to Lowe?

Orel said...

Carlos Pena makes it 4-1 Rays in the 14th!

Alex Cora said...

Hey, I eat dinner take a shower and come back to dodgers up 5-1. Woohoo. I hope that Lowe is ok. oh and nice stab by Loney at first.

Alex Cora said...

Lowe had a comebacker hit him in the calf. Torre took him out as a precaution.

Orel said...

Lowe got hit on the leg by a comebacker. He had 86 pitches so I think they decided to pull him just in case.

karina said...

Martin walks, steals 16th base.

karina said...

Rancho Ardiendo for the Red Sox, no outs.

karina said...

Ethier walks.

karina said...

Juan Pierre pinch-hit for Elbert to start the inning, he lined out. That's the only out so far.

Alex Cora said...

Oh, manny with the K. darn.

Orel said...

Here comes Brad Penny!

Alex Cora said...

Hey a Penny sighting!

Alex Cora said...

Hey I am up in Boston with man on 1st and 3rd.

Alex Cora said...

Opps, I poped out. rays win

Alex Cora said...

Pooped too.

Alex Cora said...

Hey Brad, get in the game.

Alex Cora said...

Wonder how fast Penny's ptiches are.

karina said...

How does he look?

Orel said...

Fat.

Alex Cora said...

Not good, I think he is just throwing all fastballs - according to gameday about 95. He now has the bases loaded with no one out. Man his arm is really dead. 17 pitches, walk and 2 singles. Ugg.

Orel said...

Thanks, Brad. Appreciate it.

Alex Cora said...

My computer is dying so I have to stop blogging. Good Night all - hope we pull this out!

Orel said...

What a thankless position for Cory Wade.

Orel said...

Wade gets out of it with a minimum of damage. Nice. 5-2 Dodgers.

karina said...

Wade cruised the 8th.

karina said...

Breaking news: Sweeney struck out to start the inning.

Orel said...

Wow, Karina. I can't believe it.

Orel said...

Ethier with the hustle! Even with a three-run lead, he doesn't let up.

karina said...

Manny HR! Dodgers 7- Padres 2

Orel said...

Wow. Manny.

He caused a scrum behind the center-field fence!

karina said...

Orel, i'm sorry if i was harsh when i broke the news of the Sweeney K.

karina said...

Look what i found on Deadspin, the feature is called Why your team won't make the playoffs: National League. This was written about the Dodgers:

1. Los Angeles Dodgers. Record: 74-71. Magic number: 16. Why they're doomed: Takashi Saito, Brad Penny Rafael Furcal are still out with injuries. Upcoming: Of 17 games remaining, six are with San Francisco, four with Pittsburgh and four with San Diego. Ray of hope: Andre Ethier is smacking that; had five hits and five RBI on Friday, and has his average up to .299, making him a nice compliment to Manny.

karina said...

Dodgers win! First place with a difference of 3.5 games. Night!

Orel said...

3.5! 3.5! 3.5!

Orel said...

Night!
