Game 162 Thread: Sept. 29 vs. Rockies, 1p

Last year's Fan Appreciation Day

Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-7, 2.97) vs. Jeff Francis (2-5, 6.61).

With Clayton Kershaw getting his proper tuneup and Zack Greinke right behind Kershaw in sharpness, today we let Ryu take the mound and bring this season to a close.

Today is also the Dodgers' Fan Appreciation Day, which means all fans in attendance are eligible for outstanding prices like a Hello Kitty Themed Party at Your Home for 20. Hold on a second, is this Fan Punishment Day? (Actually, there are some cool prizes (including a Vin Scully outgoing voicemail message!); full prize list details here.) Following the game, there's a postseason rally hosted by Arsenio Hall.

The Rockies wanted to start Tyler Chatwood in their final 2013 game, since Francis hasn't started since June 18. However, Chatwood is dealing with right elbow soreness, so Francis gets the nod. Or, in other words, the guy that's restin' ain't Francis.

Thank you, Rancho Cucamonga! Good night!

UPDATE 10:28a: There's also a bevy of games going on this morning with playoff and/or playoff pairing implications: Rays @ Blue Jays, Phillies @ Braves; Indians @ Twins, Cubs @ Cardinals, and Angels @ Rangers: all of which have first pitches prior to 1p PT. Please feel free to make this a Scoreboard Watching thread as well!

Too late to sign Mariano Rivera to play CF for us today?

Steve Sax said...

Rays jump out to a crazy 6-0 lead in the first inning on Toronto. Rays are tied with Texas for the second AL WC spot, and both are one game behind Cleveland.

Steve Sax said...

No Ethier or Kemp...

Steve Sax said...

Just checking with you braniacs: we don't have to worry that Pittsburgh is ahead of us by record, even if we meet in the NLCS, right? Because the Wild Card team doesn't get home-field advantage no matter what, right?

If we do this right, boys and girls, this could be a crazy single-GT scooby doo event.

(Not to mention the NFL games.)

Steve Sax said...

And Lane Kiffin's firing? Good stuff today

Dusty Baker said...

I went to bed when USC had 3 interceptions and was getting blown out in the third. Woke up to Kiffin getting shitcanned. Fun times in Pac-12 land!

Dusty Baker said...

Not sure, Sax. I want to say that the WC, even if has better record, would never trump division winner for home field. But not sure I've ever seen it written.

Dusty Baker said...

Barves underway already. Shards get into action within half an hour. Great sports drama! Thank you, Baseball Gods!

Steve Sax said...

Braves up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Phillies suck.

Dusty Baker said...

Barves up 3-0 already, bottom 1st.

Dusty Baker said...

DAMMIT!

Dusty Baker said...

Per B Shaikin, "Vin Scully has narrated a #Dodgers pregame tribute to Todd Helton, to be played before Helton's final game today in LA."

Steve Sax said...

Oracle at Wikipedia says that in a LCS, division winner automatically trumps wild-card team:

"Until 1998, the LCS alternated home-field advantage with a 2-3 format in the best-of-5 era (1969–84) and a 2-3-2 format when it went to best-of-7 (1985–present). Now home-field advantage goes to the team with the best record, or in the case of a wild card team vs. divisional winner, the divisional winner would receive home-field advantage."

Steve Sax said...

In that case, pirates and reds can beat the crap out of each other, it doesn't matter

BJ Killeen said...

Waiting to get in the parking lot. Too excited. Hello kitty prize if we win can be a sosg giveaway, however, we will keep the trip to Australia!

Steve Sax said...

BJ: check your email

Steve Sax said...

Dusty Baker said...

Jesus, just read the Bill Shaikin piece from today. Cried like a schoolgirl. Don't do that to me, Bill! But, great piece.

Dusty Baker said...

(Cries)

Dusty Baker said...

Tigers being no hit in the ninth. By Miami.

Dusty Baker said...

And, why are the Tigers finishing the season at Miami?

Dusty Baker said...

(still crying) Bill, are you happy now?

Paul said...

Great article. I know dad will be with me next Sunday. Just don't know if it will be his jersey or his worn down Brooklyn hat he use to wear proudly as he work 12 hour days in the Bay Area but he will be with me. Connect with the past to dream of the future. Hope the boys make it a fun ride.

Dusty Baker said...

Dammit paul, now you got me crying all over again brother.

BJ Killeen said...

Eating D dogs in the prime ticket club. Waay better than at the fair! Dusty, I'll be so obscene they'll kick me out!

RIP to my old man who lived and died and never got to see his beloved Red Sox win the WS. And who also took me to my first Dodgers game and never tried to steer me away because he knew I was hooked. #Fernando

Steve Sax said...

Maddon ejected. This is getting interesting

Dusty Baker said...

Oh wow, thx for heads up Sax. Switching. Over now.

Dusty Baker said...

Steve Sax said...

Adam Lind sucks! GIDP with the bases loaded and one out ends the threat. 7-4 through 7.

Now in the bottom of the eighth, leadoff walk for Ryan Langerhans (Jays).

Steve Sax said...

Braves go up 10-4. Over and out.

Steve Sax said...

Inidians up 4-0 in the sixth, but the Twins have two on and two out.

Cards are up 3-0 in the sixth

Steve Sax said...

Rangers are losing 1-0 to the Angels. Could Ron Washington be odd man out, again?!?!?!

Steve Sax said...

Dodger game about to get under way, and we're at 50 comments

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax re Ron Washington

Who nose?

#cokepun

Steve Sax said...

Jose Reyes as the tying run with two on, two out, down 7-4, bottom 8

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty: nice

Dusty Baker said...

"Inidians" - love it. We shall use that in e future.

Steve Sax said...

Reyes single to left scores Langerhans. 7-5

Dusty Baker said...

Steve Sax said...

Cleveland winning. TB won. Texas tied in the sixth

Pride of Dong said...

BJ, I'll be there after the effects of the Doyer dog wears off!

Dusty Baker said...

Jesus fucking Colorado, Ryu! Do you even care? Doesn't look like it. Embarrassing.

Dusty Baker said...

@Dong and BJ

So, in about 213 million years (half life)?

Pride of Dong said...

A Doyer dog and a coo la cool back to back is no bueno!

Dusty Baker said...

Vinny doesn't get that the tomahawk chop chant is not only not cool but largely offensive.

Rangers take a 4-2 lead

Dusty Baker said...

We have something going here. First and third, nobody out in the fifth.

Fred's Brim said...

i don't like it when we are reliant on homers to score runs

Fred's Brim said...

Oswalt pitching to get a job next season

Dusty Baker said...

We are sucking hind tit. Outside of that 11-0 explosion, we haven't been able to score consistently in quite some time. I'm getting belligerent now. Or, well, I have been but it's been latent.

Fred's Brim said...

Throw strikes, Chris

Fred's Brim said...

nice recovery, Chris

BJ Killeen said...

Fred's Brim said...

Fred's Brim said...

@Dusty who is your NFL team? Is it Dallas?

Dusty Baker said...

Drew Butera will save us all!

BJ Killeen said...

Need Rox to get 1 hit so Helton can come up 1 more time

Fred's Brim said...

Helton gonna get one more AB in the 9th.
I respect that dude as a player but I will happy to never face him again

Dusty Baker said...

@FB grew up Dallas but now mostly like Raiders. Dallas' franchise past mid-90s embarrassing, so....wait, so has been Raiders. My old man taught me football on classic Raiders, and Im big proponent of them moving back to LA, so that's pretty much where things stand.

BJ Killeen said...

Fred's Brim said...

Mary Hart staying into the 8th!

Fred's Brim said...

@DB gotcha. Think they'll come back?

Fred's Brim said...

Dusty Baker said...

Pacheco's arm was hanging by a sinew but he still managed to throw out SVS trying to steal second.

Fred's Brim said...

heh booing a playoff team on the last game of the year. Are we spoiled?

Fred's Brim said...

Helton came off three seconds early but they still give it to him

Dusty Baker said...

Fan appreciation day? This is how you say thank you? I'm going to be really surly and belligerent going into the post season.

Fred's Brim said...

closers in non-closer situations - always a good time

Dusty Baker said...

@FB

Still not convinced the local politics will allow any team in, but if it happens, I think Raiders stand a good chance.

Fred's Brim said...

sharpen that edge, Dusty. Be ready to jam some Ds in some As come Thursday!

Dusty Baker said...

Top class reception for Helton's last AB from Dodgers fans.

Dusty Baker said...

Sittdown, asshole!

Jesus fucking Colorado, Vinny, he's an opposing player. Stop the Heltongasm.

Fred's Brim said...

Attaboy, KJ

Fred's Brim said...

KJ avoiding Tulo

Fred's Brim said...

great recovery, Kenley

Fred's Brim said...

Rex Brothers to clown us again?

Fred's Brim said...

Young still looks like he's 4 inches too far from the plate

Fred's Brim said...

Young draws a walk to lead off the inning, Dee up to make a frustrating bunt

Fred's Brim said...

frustrating bunt attempt #1: popup behind the plate, luckily far enough away to not be caught

Fred's Brim said...

Dee, that was pathetic

Fred's Brim said...

Dammit Dee! Do your fucking job!
MEllis follows Dee's waste of an AB with a single

Fred's Brim said...

PB moves both runners up!

Fred's Brim said...

Buss hit(?) by pitch, Rancho Federendo

Steve Sax said...

Bases loaded, Tim Federowicz up, one out, bottom 9. Dodgers down 2-1.

Fred's Brim said...

Double play time?

Steve Sax said...

News flash: Dee Gordon still sucks. And he can't bunt.

Steve Sax said...

FedEx Ks. Nice.

Fred's Brim said...

that was awful

Dusty Baker said...

Deuces wild.

Steve Sax said...

Whatcha got, Schu?

Steve Sax said...

I know it was Fan Appreciation Day and everything, but it's nice to see all the fans staying.

Schumaker Ks on a weak breaking ball.

Dusty Baker said...

Height of frustration. Way to back into the playoffs, light hitting backups.

Fred's Brim said...

the wasted ABs by Dee and FedEx make me very surly

Fred's Brim said...

so annoying

Dusty Baker said...

USC band is on the field. They have more runs in September than we do. And play better defense than the Trojans football team.

Fred's Brim said...

laters, everyone
I am going to go let this surl fester for a few days

Dusty Baker said...

Sunglasses! What a fresh new idea to make a marching band look and feel cool!

Dusty Baker said...

Great, Matty comes out on crutches.

Fred's Brim said...

fuck, why did I check back here? Matty's done, isn't he?

Dusty Baker said...

Either it's the best gamesmanship of all time, or Matty is done.

Paul said...

@truebluela: Dodgers announce Matt Kemp is done for the season

Paul said...

I do not have confidence Kemp could finish a complete season from here on out.

Dusty Baker said...

Puig, Crawford, Skip, 1/2 Ethier, SVS - this is our outfield for the post season.

Paul said...

I really didn't want to fill up on Dodger dogs for the month of October anyways!

*cries*

Dusty Baker said...

Story gets worse. Kemp's ankle is jacked the fuck up. Bone swelling on weight-bearing bone, likely arthroscopy, has progressive arthritis in the ankle that will definitely require surgery. No weight on it for at least a month. As Paul said, we may have seen the best, or at least healthiest, of Kemp.

Throw shit at me, but I still say post-steroidal related health issues.

Fred's Brim said...

:(

Paul said...

Fuckin sucks in so many ways. I realize Donnie has to say what he says but I'm tired of the pointing to the incredible summer run they had. That seems like a long time ago. I'm still holding out hope this team is similar to the 1990 Reds. They had an incredible start and the coasted for the rest of the season until the playoffs came around and they put it back into 5th gear.

Fred's Brim said...

I hope you are right, Paully
Maybe we can play with less pressure as underdogs

Dusty Baker said...

Wait, sorry, it gets worse. There is the ankle issue, but the AC joint issue is back to the now referred to as degenerating joint in shoulder issue. Not exactly same place as before, but...that shoulder doesn't just take a turn for the better as he rounds into 30 years old.

And the ankle.

Paul said...

I'm shocked he hit so well with all that shit going on

Dusty Baker said...

Per Steve Mason:

"No Kemp 4 the #Dodgers playoff run. Ethier only available to pinch hit in NLDS."

Dusty Baker said...

Crawdaddy, Skip, Puig are your starting OFers, with SVS: Special Victims Unit off the bench.

Paul said...

We still have great starting pitching and that was how the loons from up north won last year.

Fred's Brim said...

Paully, I appreciate you keeping the proper perspective, because I am not right now

Fred's Brim said...

time to reset, gonna buzz my hair and shave off this 2 weeks of beard

Dusty Baker said...

Mrs Dusty is trying to be all positive and shit, and it's pissing me off.

Paul said...

Any word on the game times.

Paul said...

It's been a roller coaster season. One more dip till we rise to the top. Oh wait coasters don't usually end that way.

Steve Sax said...

PGT up.
