Spring Training GameThread: March 10 12.05p @ Snakes

The Dodgers are 0-2 against NL West teams this spring, averaging one run scored per game. Against the rest (really, against the White Sox), they're 1-1 and averaging six runs scored per game. So maybe today, the Dodgers can pretend they're playing someone other than the Diamondbacks, despite the fact they're in Arizona?

Or perhaps they'll notice something is different when they look over at the man calling the shots today:

Don Mattingly will make his managerial debut with the Dodgers as regular skipper Joe Torre leaves Arizona with the Taiwan contingent. Mattingly's men will host the D-backs at Camelback Ranch and the pro-tem manager will give the ball to right-handed starter Vicente Padilla, who will try to build upon the successful spring debut of five days ago, when he threw two shutout innings against the White Sox. Padilla will be followed by righties Ramon Ortiz, Eric Gagne, Jeff Weaver and Justin Miller. Righty Dan Haren gets the start for the D-backs.

Just to be provocative, I'm going to say that Gagne has a good outing today.

Did Manny go?

Kyle Baker said...

He went.

I remember this time last year we were all on pins and needles hoping we'd get Manny re-signed.

Does Manny have to come back?

Kyle Baker said...

I'm about ready for V-Pad to start throwin' at some mofos.

Kyle Baker said...

Hope Manny doesn't rely on Belly#1 for visa advice.

3 up 3 down for Dodgers in the 1st.

[RB will witness this in a few minutes.]

I'll just get my updates from Dusty Baker. I imagine that means I'll be more up-to-date than rbnlaw.

Kyle Baker said...

Update: we're not playing very well, but only down 1-0 in bottom of 2nd.

Giants still suck.

End of update.

Come on, Joyce. Another great chance to prove your credentials for Opening Day. Men on 1 and 2 with no outs and Joyce DeWitt at bat.

Padilla's line:

Nothing doing. We go to the third. Ramon Ortiz in now.

is it bad that I hope the Ortizeses get shelled?

rbnlaw said...

Battle Toad's numbers not very impressive.
Of the Ortizes (sp?), I pull for Russ over Ramon. He was a constant source of frustration during my unfortunate time as a follower of the Anaheim Angels (before they moved to LA, and whilst Fox owned the Dodgers).

rbnlaw said...

Gameday still has Rusty Ryal at bat. . .in 2009.

Kyle Baker said...

I had to take a call. Anything major happen? I think I (and the person on the other end of my speakerphone) heard a Dodger HR.

Kyle Baker said...

Ahhh, E hit one.

Kemp and Ethier first ones to go deep for Blue this (pre)season. I smell 30-30 for them.

Nomar on XM/Sirius MLB Homeplate at 3PM Pacific today.

Thanks for the memories, +1!

Bison on the range with a triple.

Kyle Baker said...

Note to broadcast guys:you can't just stop talking for 30 seconds at a time during play. Gotta be saying something. I'm a big Ken Levine guy, but...

rbnlaw said...

Gameday said that Corey Snyder walked. Is he still in baseball?

Dare I say Ra. Ortiz is somewhat sharp?

rbnlaw said...

Check that: Chris Snyder. Corey is out (no gallows humor intended)

Blue up 4-1. Feelin' it!

Kyle Baker said...

Duke Snider has been retired some time now, but Game Day hasn't caught up yet.

Kyle Baker said...

Tony Abreu - new Dodger killer. Predictable.

Kyle Baker said...

Fuck me. I shouldn't be caring this much about a ST game. 4-4. Tie game (Bears are winning).

Levine and Lyons were trying to figure out who a Diamondback player was while the guy was standing on second with the back of his jersey to the camera.

Epic.

Kyle Baker said...

I heard the line "The runner winds up standing at 3rd, whoever he is." Classic.

Josh S. said...

Pinch runner for Canoodler. Who's going to catch, if necessary?

Kyle Baker said...

Rancho ardiendo in 9th for our boys in blue.

Kyle Baker said...

DP knocks us out of the inning. Weird for Loney not to have been involved.

Josh S. said...

DP, natch.

Josh S. said...

And it ends in a sibling make-out session.

Kyle Baker said...

Called it after 9 innings. Maybe street lights came on and the boys needed to get home for supper.

rbnlaw said...

Rancho Fria for Gameday. I'm still in the top of the ninth with Koufax facing Harvey Kuenn.

rbnlaw said...

A tie? This isn't soccer.

Josh S. said...

See, there was no catcher, so they couldn't play.

Josh S. said...

There's a Sweenis on my TV! Where the hell is my remote?!

Kyle Baker said...

RB-

Sorry didn't mean to jump ahead of you and spoil the "ending" such as it is.

Watch that Koufax guy; he's brilliant but his career isn't as long as we'd all hope due to arm injuries.

MR.F said...

I don't understand the phrase "sibling make-out session."

MR.F said...

Oh. Nevermind. I found it on wikipedia.

Kyle Baker said...

There's a Wiki entryu for "sibling make-out session" ?

MR.F said...

I read the wiki about competitive sports ending in ties. There was a blurb about how Americans don't like games that end in ties, and the phrase was mentioned there.

Josh S. said...

Entryu! The Nothing is coming!

Kyle Baker said...

Damn, I was hoping for some good red hot sibling make out Wiki action.

Ken Levine: Writer, Host, Worst Commentator Ever?

http://bit.ly/aMyuxB

If what they say is true (which it probably is) I'd have to agree.

Josh S. said...

In fairness to Ken, he calls a mean Springfield Isotopes game.

Do we really need to concern ourselves about the professionalism of the commentary in a Spring Training game?
