Future Headline: "Manny Opts Out of 2010 Contract"

While some SoSGers like to see the sunny side of life, others—like me!—can't help but focus on the storm clouds on the horizon. Here's what we have to look forward to, oh, about eight months from now. From Dodgers.com:

From Ramirez's point of a view, if he has another banner year, he can opt out of the contract and try free agency again next offseason, hoping that the economy stabilizes.

From ESPN.com:

Ramirez has until November to decide whether to void the second season.

And from MLB Trade Rumors:

This was fun. We get to do it all over again after the season.

In other words: Before the year is done, Dodger fans are going to be pissed off again.

  • SCENARIO 1: Manny has a great season. Manny opts out of the second year of his contract. Dodger fans clamor for more Manny. Enter Scott Boras. The negotiation circus begins anew.
  • SCENARIO 2: Same as above, but Manny signs with another club.
  • SCENARIO 3: Manny has an average to poor season. Manny stays. The Dodgers owe him $20 million for one more year, à la Andruw Jones.

Unless the Dodgers win the World Series, it's going to be deja vu all over again for Dodger fans this winter. Enjoy Manny while you can!

Manny still has to field at least a one year $15m offer for 2010 to make up for the money Boras screwed him out of in Boston by voiding his 2 $20m options. And if he wants the amount to match in the present time, he has to find someone to pay him $25m in 2010. (He's only getting $10m this year, plus $5 next year if he opts out.)

Well put Orel. Once 2009 is over, it's win-win for Boras and lose-lose for Dodgers.

That's why the exit clause is worth a lot more than the $2m or so in NPV that Boras essentially conceded to get it.

I guess many should be thankful I don't own the Dodgers. But Neeebs, you're with me, right?
