Not If Torre Learned Anything from This Year, Andre

From the LA Times:

Andre Ethier said he was asked by Vinny Castilla about the possibility of representing his mother's native country of Mexico in the World Baseball Classic next year. Castilla is expected to manage the team.

Ethier, born in Phoenix, didn't seem particularly enthusiastic. "I'd have to think about it," he said. "I value my off-season time and I have to compete for a starting job again next year."

"I have to compete for a starting job again next year"? Is Ethier being humble or disingenuous? Or realistic? Pressure's on Frank McCourt to re-sign Manny Ramirez, which would give the Dodgers the same old problem: five outfielders, three spots.

While that would be a nice problem to have, it's not an issue right now. We've got, uh, other things to worry about.
