Game 68 Thread: June 16 vs. Angels, 12.55p

Dodgers start Jason Schmidt, RHP (1-3, 6.43) vs. Jered Weaver, RHP (5-3, 4.14).

Dodgers: 39-28 (1st place NL West, 0.5 GA, W4)
Angels: 42-26 (1st place AL West, 4.0 GA, L1)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Coming off one of his best pitching performance of the season in San Diego, Schmidt struggled in his second start since being activated from the disabled list on Sunday against Toronto. He allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out three over just four innings. Schmidt was tagged for four extra-base hits, including a home run by Troy Glaus. The good news is Schmidt consistently hit 88 mph on the radar gun and reported no pain in his shoulder.

Angels: Weaver's lower back strain, which forced him out of his start in St. Louis on Sunday after just three innings, makes him questionable. It was a recurrence of a problem that has hindered him off and on for several weeks. Weaver wasn't sharp from the beginning against the Cards, yielding three earned runs on five hits and two walks. He beat the Dodgers in Anaheim on May 19, yielding two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings, and looks forward to facing his favorite boyhood team at Dodger Stadium for the first time. If he can't go, Joe Saunders -- 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts -- could be summoned from Triple-A Salt Lake.

The lineup, from Inside the Dodgers:

Furcal, SS
Pierre, CF
Loney, 1B
Gonzo, LF
Vote for Martin, C
Betemit, 3B
Abreu, 2B
Ethier, RF
Schmidt, P

Just landed back from Kusadasi to see Sammy get last night's win. But wherefore art Loney in today's starting lineup??!!

Batting third!

Steve Sax said...

Oh, my bad. I expected Grady to have him lower in the lineup.

Orel said...

Both teams tempting fate. Two bases-loaded situations, no runs scored.

Orel said...

Still no score, but this isn't really a pitchers' duel. Both teams have stranded more men than Julia Roberts.

Good one. But yes, it's more of a hitting w/ RISP duel than a pitchers' duel. Bases loaded again.

Gameday has been stuck on a 1-1 count to Willits with the bases juiced int eh top of the fifth and two out. I have a bad feeling I know how this ends...

can someone who is watching the game tell me what is going on? I am now in Budapest but I'm getting blacked out on mlb.tv due to the fox national game (which must be nationally televised here too, I suppose)...

Orel said...

not a happy one

Eric Karros said...

Yes I'm having the same Gamecast issue

Steve Sax said...

please tell me what the f is going on here. ESPN is also stalled but says it's 1-1?

Steve Sax said...

OOOOORRRREEEEELLL!!!!

Schmidt had the bases loaded with two outs but Willits singled in two. Seanez came in, gave up one more run then struck out Napoli. 3-0 Angels after 4 1/2.

Orel said...

STELLLLLA!!!!!

Oddly mlb.com is also stuck at the same bases loaded spot in 5th.

Orel said...

Nomar batting in the pitcher's spot. Grounds out.

Orel said...

Furcal grounds weakly to first.

Steve Sax said...

I soooo hate MLB.com gameday right now. And ESPN gamecast. And the frickin' Dodgers' lack of hitting (way to work a 3-0 count back to a ground out, Nomar).

JPSQ = 1 CS today, so far.

Orel said...

ALERT: James Loney appears to be growing a beard.

Orel said...

Pierre on first. I have no idea how.

Orel said...

Loney singles. Men on first and second with two out.

Orel said...

The Fox announcers call him "Louie Gonzalez."

Eric Karros said...

Pierre walked. Both teams are walking more than Forrest Gump.

Orel said...

Dodgers = 20 CS this year. Lead the NL, maybe the majors.

Orel said...

BB, Forrest, BB!

Steve Sax said...

I think James Loney is trying to emulate Steve Sax here. I didn't shave either on my latest international trip. I feel a little like Ted Kacyzinski (sp?).

But at least Loney saved JP from another CS.

Orel said...

Full count to Gonzo.

Orel said...

Oh man. Gonzo drilled it into the RF corner but foul.

Orel said...

Backwards K.

Steve Sax said...

Hey, that's good, Gonzo. Down by three and with two men on with two out, a nice time to take a called 80 mph pitch down the center of the plate.

Orel said...

"Rudy See-AH-nez."

Orel said...

Billz 1-2-3. He should be starting.

Steve Sax said...

So now that we've successfully freed Loney and Kemp, and freed Eddie Murray, and Voixed Pour Le Russell, we now have to Free Chad Billz?

At least we might put all those shirts to good use. (with the help of a sharpie and some iron-ons, of course)

Steve Sax said...

Glad Betemit turned around to bat left handed, and then flied out on the first frickin' pitch.

Shades of Eddie Murray! (who was also a switch hitter, btw)

Orel said...

Pickoff throw at second hits Kotchmann on the head.

Steve Sax said...

Yikes for Kotchman. Anderson already went down in the first. How bad was the hit to the head? Hope he's okay.

Orel said...

He walked off under his own power. Seemed shaken up but okay.

Orel said...

Andre Ethier Signature Quickness! He beats out the throw to first.

Eric Karros said...

If Scot Shields to gets a hold he'll pass Broxton. Play for that if nothing else, Dodgers.

Orel said...

ESPN HoldCast

Orel said...

Shhh, Dodger bats, keep sleeping....

Steve Sax said...

The Dodgers are playing the Angels like they have all year long--with NO BATS.

Fire Bill Mueller!

Orel said...

And instead of the Saito Smile we get the Frankie Fistpump.
