Dodgers start Jason Schmidt, RHP (1-2, 7.36) vs. Chris Young, RHP (6-3, 2.42).
Dodgers: 34-23 (1st place NL West, 0.5 GA, W2)
Padres: 33-23 (T-2nd place NL West 0.5 GB, W2)
From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:
Dodgers: After a seven-week layoff to heal a sore shoulder, Schmidt returns to the mound for the Dodgers. From what he’s shown in bullpen sessions and a lone Minor League rehabilitation start, his fastball velocity is up from the mid-80s that served as a red flag in his first three starts in April. He made 71 pitches in a Single-A game last week and he figures to have about 90 in him for this start.Padres: Young dominated the Pirates in his last outing. He threw seven shutout innings on four hits and one walk and struck out seven. The start was the end to a phenomenal month for Young. He allowed only five earned runs in six starts and went 4-1 in May.
COMMENTS:
- Okay, here comes a barnburner. Not only do we face an interdivision rival and herald the return of Jason Schmidt, but we face three days of solid starting pitching in Young, Greg Maddux, and Jake Peavy. We will counter with Schmidt (whom we can only hope has found some extra velocity during his time off), Randy Wolf, and Hong-Chih Kuo, which isn't exactly weak in the middle but has me uneasy on both ends, sort of like how I feel when I look at a Subway meatball sandwich made on the Italian white bread. Let's hope that the outcome doesn't make feel like how I feel when said meatball sandwich re-emerges from my digestive tract.

We have a Hiram Bocachica sighting! Let's hope we have a Jason Schmidt sighting as well...
Go blue!
Pierre leads off with a pop-up bunt attempt. One out.
Yay.
Furcal follows with a walk. You see, Juan? Take a damn pitch!
Furcal steals second, Nomar advances him for out#2, and Kent Ks to end the threat.
If kent and nomar keep sucking, we're toast.
Schmidt makes his DL return. Marcus Giles pops up. Sister Sledge grounds to Kent. Gonzalez flies out to deep center.
Vin says Jason got to 88 mph early in the inning. Welcome back!
That was MONEY by Furcal! Nice play!
It appears we have a pitchers' duel.
Another pop out for Pierre. Does anyone track this stat?
Pierre SUCKS. Bring up KEMP!
Holy smokes, Schmidt back with a vengeance.
Kemp went 1-4 tonight with a HR
Why Seanez?
Damn they beat us with 2 hits. That sucks.
As a matter of fact, we are decidedly not in first place anymore.
Has anyone else noticed the CNN/SI Rumor Mill entry that Colletti and Ichiro's agent had an hour-long discussion last night before the game??? If this is old news, I apologize.
