Game 61 Thread: June 8 vs. Blue Jays, 7.40p

Dodgers start Brad Penny, RHP (7-1, 2.37) vs. Dustin McGowan, RHP (2-2, 5.50).

Dodgers: 34-26 (3rd place NL West, 2.5 GB, L3)
Blue Jays: 28-31 (4th place AL East, 10.0 GB, L2)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Penny wasn't at his best on Sunday back at the scene of last year's All-Star Game start, escaping his outing in Pittsburgh with a no-decision. Penny hadn?t allowed a home run all season, but allowed two in the first five frames -- to Adam LaRoche and Jason Bay -- both leading off innings. He had plenty of velocity, but hit too many bats in an outing somewhat reminiscent of his second-half struggles last season. Penny won his only previous decision against Toronto.

Blue Jays: McGowan has gone 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA in his last three starts, which is a drastic improvement over his first trio of outings, in which the young right-hander went 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA for the Blue Jays. In his last trip to the mound on Saturday, McGowan struck out five, walked three, and allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings against the White Sox, picking up a second straight win for the first time in his career. McGowan has never faced the Dodgers.

COMMENTS:

  • Tony Jackson said it best:
What we learned in this three-game massacre was that the Padres are the more resourceful team, the more opportunistic team, the more dangerous team, the more exciting team and, ultimately, the better team. I'm not saying that can't change between now and September, or even between now and next week. But it's not going to change by itself.

Via Inside the Dodgers, the lineup:

Pierre, CF
Furcal, SS
Nomar, 1B
Kent, 2B
Gonzo, LF
Martin, C
Ethier, RF
Abreu, 3B
Penny, P

Hooray fopr Gonzo. 2-1 dodgers.

Everyone else, stop swinging at the first pitch. That means you, Nomar and Ethier. But especially Nomar.

Grady, you still suck.

Baseball. One night it stomps on your heart, the next night Olmedo Saenz hits a two-run walk-off homer.

...And Nomar still aint getting any lately...

Sooooooo glad they won. SD loses in extras. AZ was getting drubbed by BOS.

I didn't see where he hit the game-winning HR--into his namesake pavilion, perchance?

Frankly, I think Tony Jackson is right. Not only that, but it appears that Buddy Black is the smarter manager. Okay, maybe I'm a little Angels-biased there, it's still an awfully small sample size, and yeah, this year the Dodgers are 4-5 against the Pad people, where last year it was a runaway 5-13 rout. As Jon pointed out, the Dodgers got slaughtered in an embarrassing April 30 meltdown last year, but they ultimately got sweet, and historic karmic payback later in the season. You just never hardly know.
