Stephen Fife (0-1, 2.16) vs. Adam Wainwright (13-13, 4.01).
At the very least the Dodgers have secured a series split with the Cardinals, but how unsatisfying would that be? Without a win today, the Dodgers would resume lingering in the Redbirds' exhaust. No, we're going to call today's game a must-win, as in their next two series the Dodgers play the first-place Nationals and the first-place Reds. The Cards? They get the Astros. And the Cubs. Then the Astros again.
No disrespect to Mr. Fife, but unfortunately not-Clayton Kershaw is taking the mound for the Dodgers today. Yet the Cardinals, suffering from their own special brand of NL Central ineptitude, are eminently beatable. We're ready to believe, Stephen!

I had this crazy, drunken dream that we lost both Bills and Kershaw for the season during its most important time. Where did that come from?
MEllis down. AJEllis out.
Hello? Is this thing on?
Young Mc going through some tough times:
"James McDonald has been removed from the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting rotation.
McDonald has fallen off considerably since a strong first half. The 27-year-old right-hander has allowed 14 runs in his last three starts - a total of 12 innings pitched. He walked four batters and allowed four runs in just 3 2-3 innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Sunday that McDonald would become available out of the bullpen around Tuesday. McDonald is 3-5 with a 7.08 ERA in the second half, after going 9-3 with a 2.37 ERA in the first half."
DRE DAY!
2-2 bishes
This is unbad.
Wow I was still celebrating Ethier's blast and Kemp had already struck out.
Kemp was so much better when he had two arms.
This is almost but not quite entirely unlike bad.
Fuck you and your stupid socks, Wainwright!
Still just that one homerun, eh Gonzo?
This is going to end in heartbreak, isn't it?
Strangely, I have a good feeling about this one, Dusty. It could also just be gas.
Hanley's not helping.
Treanor homerun here, I'm calling it!
Dee has one job, and he's not doing it.
At least he slid head first, but dove about 15 feet from the bag.
Abreu Ks, natch.
That was way high, Ethier.
So hard to watch Kemp ABs now.
Hanley walk-off here.
Well, he, uh, walked off the field.
Wash yer face, Descalso!
Light GT here! It was hot a hell out there (yes, I confess I left early; kid in tow).
Dear Shane Victorino,
You are horrible.
Signed, SoSG Sax
Come on, dammit, I wanna make party.
Ugh.
Why couldn't Salas have done that to Kemp?
Hey, this isn't Trackside Live!
I've got a bad feeling about Guerrier.
Strike-'em-out-throw-'em-out DP!

Hey Adrian, this would be a good time to rewrite your narrative.
Never mind.
Hanley single!
At least we've flipped the lineup for the 12th.
The Giants lost, so if we win we can totally win the division!

Limbo lessons for Mellis.
Mellis looking to end it!
ELYMANIA
I have a bad feeling about this.
Ugh, Ely walks the first guy.
C'mon Ely, find the strike zone.
Hey, Russell Martin had a three-run HR today. Great.
Two out, man on second.
I was positive about this game up until this very moment.
Game over.
Shit!
I like how Prime Ticket can't get their on-screen graphics to work, so they superimpose a big WE'RE HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES ticker at the bottom of the screen.
This team is so ready for the post-season.
Thanks, Dodgers!
Los Angeles Dodgers @Dodgers
Jon Jay, previously 1-for-17 in the series, rips an RBI double to give the #Cardinals a 3-2 lead (T-12).
Might as well hit Holliday if you're going to take the loss, right?
Hanley's defense kills us again.
Ely walks in a run. 5-2 Cards.
WHY AM I STILL WATCHING
Ely proving he ain't in Albuquerque any more.
Fuck this, I'm switching to watch Faith Hill's legs on the SNF intro.
Drinks.
I'm sure we'll score two here so we can lose by one.
Shredder walks! Victorino HR here gets us to within one. Then we can lose.
I'm surprised Victorino only grounded into one out there, not the two he usually does.
There's a shocker.
OK...NOW we're not making the postseason.
That was our shot. We go to DC, while the Cards get Houston at home.
Rest up, finish the season strong, and we'll reboot over the winter.
Rest Kemp?
Welcome to the "We'll get 'em next season" wagon, Gnomes!
White flag PGT up!
