Derek Jeter won the Hank Aaron award. MLB will announce before the game that because of the achievement, they will rename it the Derek Jeter award for Derek Jeter.
Somewhere, Joe Mauer weeps.
Hank Aaron and Joe Mauer will also be renamed Derek Jeter.
This is so unfair, i bet Mauer will have pain in his back all the winter, because he carried his modest team to the postseason.
In the other hand, there should be something mesmerizing or hypnotic about Jeter. My dad, the rabid Yankees fan, who compares every good baseball player with Mickey Mantle, told me last week this:
"Jeter is the best Yankee ever". I replied with "really?, even better, i don't know Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford"and dropped a few of Yankee greats my dad has tried us to worship (with no success).
My dad just said "he's better than Mickey Mantle and being the best Yankee, means he's the best baseball player EVER"
For a second, i was about to reply and then it hit me the notion that i might have children someday and i wouldn't like them to dispute Koufax, Snyder, Robinson, Karros, Garvey, Valenzuela et al greatness (because i'm sure my kids will turn out to be Giants fans)
Happy birthday, Fernando Valenzuela (49)!
Yankee Slappy Mode!
There's no arguing with rabid fans, Karina.
The Phillies must feel like the Dodgers right now. Blink and you're down two runs.
Baseball will be renamed Jeterball.
For shame, White Slappy. For shame.
Jeterball will then be shortened to just "Jeter."
New league: MLJ
Johnny Damon, playing truly, madly, deeply in left field, can't get to Victorino's blooper.
Utley > Sabathia
Looks like it's gonna be a slugfest tonight.
Reporting from the Twittersphere:
Sports media are incredulous that Jeter took the Aaron award. Even the usual Yankee apologists (e.g., everyone).
But there can't be a Jeter that isn't in the Bigs, so it would just be Jeterball.
If the Yankees suck, then how come they're leading your sorry asses, Phiwey Phans?
They could rename the "minors" J, JJ, JJJ. There would be no low J, just high J.
It would be the MVJ award, but because Jeter is always the most valuable, it would just be redundant.
Hey, that first inning only took an hour.
Does Jeter get Double Platinum Gloves instead of Gold Gloves, you think?
All precious metals will be renamed Jeterminum.
Periodic table: J(2)
it'd be the Silver Jeter award, Jeter clutch player of the year, the Derek Jeter pitching award, and so on?
On the radio, Joe Morgan was livid that both benches were warned before the Yankees could retaliate for A-Rod getting hit. It was pretty hilarious.
how did Feliz dare to field that?
McCarver thinks Pedro Feliz will win a couple of gold gloves in the future, awesome.
That means Beard still has a shot!
I think baseball should remove all adjectives in their awards and replace them with Jeter. Like the Clutch Performer of the Year would become the Jeter Performer of the Year.
@Josh S on ESPN latino (as Dusty would say) they were saying the very same thing.
He never touched home.
Baseball ended weeks ago. Is this a Arizona Fall League GT or something?
Go Javelinas!!
Gotta be the first time Howard has ever missed a plate.
I guess Howard's been watching Matt Holliday too much. Next thing you know, he's getting a grounder into the balls.
Howard couldn't see the plate for all those white towels waving.
Jeter would have glove-flipped that better.
Jeter would have also been covering second, knowing the grounder would go there.
Jeter would have fielded his own hit, for that matter.
Bison just checked in via a Tweet from the Lakers game.
I loved how Matt Kemp twittered "i'm baaaaaaaack". It felt like Opening Day.
Favorite Dodger for no real reason: Kal Daniels.
Guy was not great but when he did hit it. He crushed it.
On a scale of one to Hasselhoff, how drunk are you right now, Paul?
Jayson Werth: post-season hero, former Dodger.
I like that commercial of Hamels struggling at Chavez Ravine.
I just lost my freakin' cable! To quote MLASF, "sdkjfhakjsdhfgakjdh."
Stop taking me out of context, Dusty!
I am mother Teresa right now but wishing I was fathe O'Jameson.
Whew! Cable is working in the back room. Alas, I have to watch the game on a 32 inch not 42 inch set. Times is haaaaaard.
Yank-mes fans: Don't cry over spilled Melk.
I was a big fan Greg Brock.
Hey Joe Buck needs to adjust his chair that cant be ergonomically safe.
I will be surprised if I can make one comment without a typo.
I wasn't a fan of Jeff Hamilton.
Park is in. Time for the Yankees to blow it open.
Maybe Park can pretend he's throwing to Matt Kemp and get the job done.
Maybe Park can imagine he's pitching to the Dodgers in general.
Maybe I can pretend that Matt stairs is the greatest hitter ever.
Maybe I can pretend that USC didn't lose yesterday.
Come on, Phiwwies! We want more competitive baseball or else the season is over. For at least that reason, let's go Phiwws!
Utley >>> Sabathia
4-3 Yankees
Utley takes it out! Pasadena, where you at?
I cringed when Buck said "into the night"
Chase Utley: big dodger fan.
Matt Stairs hits a homerun every time he swings.
Chase Utley: greasy.
Is there anyone Tom Cable won't hit?
Cano could not have thrown that bloop more perfectly.
We want Lidge!
Does Rivera have a foreign object under his jacket that he plans to use when Captin Lou is distracting the ref?
I enjoy watching Jayson Werth strike out.
Joba's dealing!
Feliz = Stairs
This sets up the Brad Lidge meltdown nicely.
Well that sucks.
Pete Happy!
I am.
former Giant Pedro Feliz
This HR sucks because it was after deuces wild.
Ha ha Jaba to the sarlacc pit
Anyone else having audio issues with the Fox feed? Although not hearing Joe Buck's bored voice clearly isn't a big problem.
Damon with the two-out single. The meltdown beginneth.
Next step of the meltdown: Wasted throw to 2B.
WOW what a heads-up double-steal by Damon. Steals second then outruns Feliz to an empty third base.
Next step: Hit batsman.
Meltdown, Part 2: Hit Teixeira.
Pedro Feliz sucked by letting Damon beat him to third
Meltdown: complete.
Brad Lidge is back.
Step 3: flat fastball.
Not complete, remember there are RISP
That Lidge fastball had less movement on it than me on my sofa today.
Orel, you nailed this meltdown
7-4 Yanks. Step off the Lidge, Phillies fans.
At least Lakers are up big.
Jeter cheers so fucking great!
Now Mariano Rivera is the last big-name reliever to not blow it this post-season....
Wish I could have predicted it in the NLCS.
Rivera basically owns everyone.
I get so jealous every time I see Stairs make an out.
Stairs. Ughhhhh and out.
So dejected Philly fans pleeease. Yes!
Karina, you are absolutely correct. Yankees one win away.
WS done and done. Not only did Phiwwy beat us, but they deprived us of a competitive, six or seven game WS.
Judas!!!!!
Still at least Philly is cryin.
Not sure why I am happy and why I am sad. So confused.
Hey Broxton you can get up from behind the couch now Stairs is gone.
Wonder if they'll still turn over cars and climb light poles in Phiwwy, even in loss?
@Paul if the Phillies win the World Series, we could say we got beaten by the team destined to championship.
if the Yankees win, it means that Dodgers fiercest and meanest rival in the A, the ones who've claimed 8 WS titles from the Dodgers, are the champions.
Analyzing this, the present situation is very annoying for Dodgers fans and the most annoyed fan of all could be awesome Erin.
Yeah, I don't think Erin is exactly riveted to this World Series.
That was fun.
@Karina
my favorite AL team is the Bo Sox so I can only imagine what kind of nightmare this might be for Erin.
The only thing worse would be the Giants vs the Yankees in the Series. (shudders).
Dear Phillies,
Losing Game 4 in heartbreaking fashion is a real bitch, ain't it? Enclosed you will find the world's smallest violin.
Cordially,
The Dodgers
I know the Yankees have done far more damage to us in the history of the franchise but it was nice to see the Phils lose a game like that.
@Paul that thought of Giants-Yankees, at this hour (1 am), is beyond cruelty.
In the side note, it's comprehensible why you've been so so bitter about this WS.
Utterly comprehensible!
Everyone else sucks, and I hate them!
All I am saying is give hate a chance.
