Chicago White Sox' 2010 Pennant Drive Gains Weight

He's your problem now, Ozzie Guillen:

CHICAGO (AP)—Andruw Jones(notes) agreed Wednesday to a $500,000, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Jones hit .214 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs in 82 games with Texas this year while making 53 starts as the designated hitter, 12 in left field, five in right field and four at first base.

A five-time All-Star who has slumped in recent years, Jones was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers in January and signed with the Rangers the following month.

He agreed to a $36.2 million, two-year contract with Los Angeles in December 2007. Now 32, he can make an additional $1 million in performance bonuses under his agreement with the White Sox.

“This is an opportunity to add a power bat to the roster while improving our outfield depth,” White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. “With the addition of Andruw, Mark Kotsay and Omar Vizquel, we feel our bench is taking shape to be a strong asset heading into the 2010 season.”

Yep, this off-season is all about building up the bench. Oh, and really old infielders. Good thinking, Kenny!

By "building up the bench", do you mean literally adding framing and lateral support in the dugout to support Andruw's ponderous bulk?

Then, yes, that would be accurate.

I doubt Jones could fit into white socks. Perhaps he should try a pale Snuggie as opposed to the pale hose.

So Rich Aurelia is staying retired? Bet the Sox were disappointed.

Thankfully, the chiSox are not on the 2010 schedule.

RB - this shit is ON Sunday!

Mr. C - don't know what to say.

Hey - Jones has 54 more career HR's than Bonds did at the same age.

And 32 more than Babe Ruth.

I got your back, big guy.

He was actually asking for more white sauce.

@EK

He's also got all of Barry's charm and the Babe's rigorous training regimen.

No need to say anything. Sometimes you have to be at one with the suck.

That, and we're stockpiling horse placenta.

@MLASF

They're ordering him the "Control Top" pale hose.

how does this signing coincide with the demand that the pitchers esp. Bobby Jenks slim down and get in better shape?

@dan

They were planning ahead. The charter flights have weight limits.

DB,
Already set the DVR just in case I'm up too late Saturday watching SC/UCLA.

Hoping for glory at the Emirates.

RB-

I already have that awful knot in my stomach arising from my nervousness over this critical derby tie. I'll be down the pub in Pasadena bright and early!

If anything, I just want to see Wenger get all riled up and pissed off.

rbnlaw said...

So you're predicting another flinging of the jacket? Hell, he did that when they were beating Spurs. If they get behind to Chelsea, he might go nude.

In other news; I'm going to the all-important 2nd round CIF Southern Division playoff game featuring the mighty Argos of Garden Grove HS taking on the Beckman Patriots.

Go Grove! (official alma mater of rbnlaw. . .class of 80)

I never know if Wenger is truly enraged at the officiating or ordering more wine.

rbnlaw said...

More wine!!!

Cheer up, Mr. C. You have a derby you need to concentrate on this weekend - get a hold of yourself, man!

rbnlaw said...

This Spurs/Villa game is quite entertaining. Good comeback by Burnley this morning, but alas, short against the Hammers.

Less than 24 for us, DB.

Dusty Baker said...

Yep, I have the Villa/Spurs match on as we speak. 1-1 late. I need fantasy pts from Defoe and Lennon.

rbnlaw said...

All things considered, I'd love to be at Camp Nou tomorrow.

For the record: Rachel Uchitel is not attractive.
Also for the record: The might Argos of Garden Grove HS defeated the Beckman Patriots 38-21 on a cold and drizzly night that saw this brave reporter wearing shorts and a windbreaker. A "Grove" windbreaker.

Coffee was 2 bucks a cup.

Trying to go to sleep. Had some beers and some beaujolais noveau so I'm sure to awaken at 4am as it all turns to sugar. At which time I'll pace around, eventually make coffee, read the early news, then go down the pub way too early so I can get a good stool on which to watch Arsenal v Chelsea. This is what passes as a game face, RB. Good luck tomorrow, but may my main man Frankie put a hat trick past you RvP-less lot!

Mr. Customer said...

Well, my reds probably shouldn't have won that match, but I'll take a little luck now and then. Counting down to Dusty coming back from the pub (perhaps literally) full of piss and vinegar in 5...4...3...

rbnlaw said...

My reaction to today's fiasco:
More wine!!! That and a striker who can finish a goddamn play.

And a new hairdo for Drogba. I hate that guy.

Dusty Baker said...

Back. Full of piss, vinegar, and top of the table. Nappy time (not Drogba's hair, but sleep) now.

rbnlaw said...

DB,
I'd go to a different pub if that's what they're serving.

Mr. Customer said...

Back up to 5th, and I'm not complaining.

Mr. Customer said...

Unless the hot stove heats up more than I expect, we're probably going to have a virtual "Sons of Bobby Moore" annex around here.

Dusty Baker said...

"Sons of Paul Gascoigne"

Mr. Customer said...

Sons of Steven Gerrard was discarded for excessive partisanship, despite my arguments that we'd be saving money on stationary.
