Who Watches the WBC?

It is a beautiful Saturday afternoon here in Los Angeles, sun shining and crisp spring air outside, and I am finding myself strangely intrigued by today's Canada vs. USA World Baseball Classic game (now the bottom of the seventh, bases juiced with one out for the US, who is up 6-4).

This, after thoroughly ignoring every leadup-to-the-WBC article on ESPN (who is carrying many of the games).

Is anyone else watching this? If so, comment away...we may do future GameThreads if there is a following. (And by the way, Russell Martin is behind the plate for Canada.)

Bases were loaded with none out and the US couldn't plate one run. Youkilis got Kd on a check swing, and Granderson looked pathetic to K and end the inning.

On to the 8th, 6-4 USA.

4-6-3 gets the US out of the inning.

You know, I am realizing now that I may be watching this because the UCLA-Oregon game is at halftime (and curiously not in HD). (Bruins by 7.)

Hi Sax. I tuned in after seeing this post but unfortunately can't stick around. Still 6-4 USA in 8th, 2 on 1 out for Pedroia.

Larry Jones strikes out with the bases juiced to strand three for the second straight inning. On to the 9th, 6-4 US.

Thanks EK for the fly-by. At least I'm not totally crazy.

Man on second, one out for the US in the top of the 9th

JJ Putz is on the mound and the Rogers Centre crowd is rocking...

Putz gives up a deeeeeeeep double and it's 6-5, still one out.

Putz gets out of it, USA wins 6-5 to open up Pool C in Toronto. USA!

The Netherlands beat the Dominican Republic, 3-2. What??

Steve Sax said...

Hey man, don't be dissin' the Dutch. I hear they were flying, man.

I guess the Netherlands' victory was payback for when the Dominicans upset them in the '89 Eating-Fries-with-Mayo Finals. In fairness, the Dutch were missing a few key players in that game.
